I don't know if he has an ego NOW, but he certainly did eight years ago: http://robotech.com/news/viewarticle.php?id=15 Among other things, he says that de-emphasizing the music was a good thing for Robotech, that Macross sequels have followed more in Robotech's footsteps than the original Macross, and that he deliberately made Minmay obnoxious to make a political point.
-
That seems ass-backwards to me. It's well-documented that Robotech started life as an adaptation of Macross...which then had to have these other episodes grafted on; the staff worked to try to fit it all together, and the McKinney books tried to fill some of the nastiest cracks and holes any way they could. Unless I'm misunderstanding something, it sounds like the theory you mention implies that Macek came up with the story first, and then had to find anime which expressed his vision. That's pure nonsense. But it sounds like something the "Macek is a visionary" people would think up...and they're only slightly more deluded than the "Macek is the antichrist" people. (That's right, I'm of neither party. I'm with the "Macek is a hack" crowd.)

The magazine is almost 300 pages, of which about 80~85 contain Macross the First.

What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
Gubaba replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I'd go with the Foul Fowl in recommending War in the Pocket. As he says, the 08th MS Team also stands alone quite well, but I really disliked that series for being too light-weight for a Gundam series...hell, it's almost cheerful at times. I'm really in the minority there, though. Most people seem to love it. MS Igloo can also be enjoyed without much knowledge of the events of the original series, although it' certainly a help. And if you don't mind jumping ahead, there's always V Gundam... -
MD Geist - 1986 Original Cut - Subtitled
Gubaba replied to Area88's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Kaori's fate in Akira scarred me for life. Iczer-1 scarred me for life. Hell, the people getting ripped to shreds in Megazone Part II scarred me for life. MD Geist just left me me kinda...restless and bored. -
That's not normal...that's just all lower-case. Maybe he doesn't need a new keyboard...he just needs to have the shift key replaced...

MD Geist - 1986 Original Cut - Subtitled
Gubaba replied to Area88's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I wouldn't really call it "so bad it's good"...although, to be fair, I've never watched it drunk. Still, I remember very little about it EXCEPT that it was bad...and it's ridiculous "twist' ending (at least, I assume it was meant to be a twist...I've only seen it raw, and that was well before I learned any Japanese). But yeah...at least it stuck with me somewhat in the 22 years since I last saw it. That's a recommendation of a sort, I suppose. -
MD Geist - 1986 Original Cut - Subtitled
Gubaba replied to Area88's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The thing about MD Geist is...it's really, really, atrociously, horrendously average. So you'll be just as disappointed with it if you go in with low expectations as you would if you went in with high expectations. Hell, even if you expect ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, you'll be disappointed. It's THAT average. -
I'll be honest...the '80s metal scene kind of escaped me. I was much more into what we called "cutting edge," which was of course VASTLY different from "college rock" and (later) "alternative." Or at least it SEEMED vastly different at the time. So even though there's a world of difference between, say, Throwing Muses and Soundgarden, they do tend to get lumped together under the same genre heading. And of course I'll agree that someone like Iron Maiden has very different thematic concerns that, for example, Cinderella...to say that they're a completely different genre is just silly, unless you're into entomologist-levels of classifying and sub-classifying. It's all metal. Specifically '80s metal. You may like one band and despise the other, but they're not really all THAT different.

MD Geist - 1986 Original Cut - Subtitled
Gubaba replied to Area88's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
So, this is the version that I watched on VHS in 1987? Wow. Be honest, though. It's still pretty sucky. -
That does sound strange...maybe Pizza's finally hit Robotechfanplus-like levels of obnoxiousness...so much that they HAVE to clamp down on him. Just a guess on my part. And his "lawyer" pronouncements aren't going to convince anyone except the already convinced...he HAS to know that. So he's just just making himself look worse by extending the argument, and (correct me if I have the situation wrong) it has the added effect of tearing Robotech X further apart as well, right? Y'know, I remember a bit more than a year ago, I listened to Space Station Liberty for the first (and last) time, and Kevin McKeever was on there, saying (again and again AND AGAIN) "We own ALL of Robotech" and (more to the point) "It's a great time to be a Robotech fan." Well, I don't know if it's really a great time to be a Robotech FAN or not, but it certainly seems to be a terrible time to be a Robotech SITE.

Maybe Bank-of-Kev's got the weekend off...? And isn't Pizza the Hutt still there, insulting everyone while claiming that everyone's insulting him? (Not that his voice is terribly important in dealing with the subject at hand...but he was shrill enough that I stopped reading the thread after about the fifth or sixth page.) I think the biggest problem with these kinds of threads is that they start to get bogged down in legalese, and everyone kind of turns off after a while. Maybe that's what's happening here. Certainly it seems like Memo's stopped listening a few years ago...
-
PM'd you.
-
Ah, that's cool. I need to listen to more Tchaikovsky. I only know the famous stuff... That actually sounds like a pretty GOOD weekend to me (musically, at least). You should probably throw on some Cocteau Twins, too. They're not a hair metal band? They certainly LOOK like one (and sound like it, too).
-
Much as I disagree with him, Memo will say whatever he feels like saying, especially over at RT.com. And a lot of the fanboys will eat it up. Believe me, I went through a similar thing with Shaloom at Macross Generation. Even when Shaloom said, "all my info is false," a lot of people there still stuck by him and are even now waiting patiently for more. There's a time where you have to admit you've done all you can, and some people will believe whatever they want to believe. Not that it changes the facts, of course. A million people could believe that HG has the intellectual property rights to Macross, but that won't make it true. Now, if Memo comes over HERE and says it, that's different. But if he wants to spread his errors all over RT.com, it's no skin off our nose.
-
Oh, no way...that's totally ridiculous, I mean, just look at episode... Um. Uh... Hmm. Yeah, I guess you're right.

Valk-Girl Rei remains one of the truly great achievements of humanity...totally blows away both the Colossus of Rhodes AND the Hanging Garden of Babylon.
-
Thank you.
-
*sigh* I've been resisting setting up such an obvious straight line, but here goes: "Yes, but infiltrating earth's defense grid...that wasn't skill, that was just luck!"
-
Hang on a sec...I always thought the main criticism against RT was that it changed too many things (at least, that was always MY problem with it)...attacking it for keeping something the same seems a little unfair...
-
You might want to make that clearer, then. Saying "it seems that Harmony Gold bought (or stole) the name when Revell folded" makes it sound like you heard the information somewhere, not that it's something you came up with yourself. There are enough lies, damn lies, and statistics HG spokesman utterances going around already without adding more.
-
That little "plip plip plip" sound you hear is your credibility as a Robotech fan dribbling away, for not knowing which saga features Dana...
-
It's not the caps, it's that I can't figure out what you're saying most of the time. Been watching Dana's shower scenes one too many times, have we?
-
They didn't buy (or steal) the name when Revell folded. The name was forced on HG by Revell BECAUSE Revell had the Macross kits. After the series aired, Revell started putting out more kits that were directly connected to the series (like the SDF-1). No offense intended, but where do you get your information? Most of it appears to be wrong...

Episode 11 is up...one more and we'll be a third of the way through...
