You, Sir, are f*ckin' AWESOME! What about Roadhouse, man? ROADHOUSE?
-
Really? Strange...it's subtitled in the Central Anime version of Dynamite 7, and I thought that was the standard fansub... Anyway, Zomeo decides he's going to leave the Macross 9 Fleet, stay on Zola, marry Zoliet, and live the life of a hardworking Zolan. Zoliet's rather taken aback by this and says, "But..we can't have children." Zomeo asks why, and Zoliet says, "Well...you don't have a pouch." Then the radio-show narrator breaks in and explains that humans and Zolans can't mate. Which makes Michael's canonical human/Zentradi/Zolan heritage a bit of a mystery...

Did the VF-4, VF-2SS, YF-19, YF-21, VF-19, VF-17, and VF-0 piss you off, too?
-
No, they're descended from marsupials, like everything else on Zola (listen closely to the "Zomeo and Zoliet" radio show that plays in the background occasionally during Dynamite 7).

You've been putting an awful lot of words in my mouth, and I don't appreciate it. Can you stick to the arguments I'm making instead of the arguments you think I might make? Look, we can throw piles of words at each other, but it all comes down to two main points: 1) I don't think there's any point in continuing a twenty-five-year-old slapdash, bowdlerized, whitewashed, Frankenstein monster of an anime (which is a footnote in history thanks to being the missing link between completely hacked-up kids shows like Battle of the Planets and the unfiltered, uncensored, unwesternized anime that came out in the '90s). 2) You apparently do. I don't think I'm being unreasonable in my dislike of Robotech. I've told the story of my history with Macross and Robotech multiple times here and elsewhere, so I don't want to rehash it again. But to say that my dislike of Robotech has nothing to do with Robotech itself, and everything to do with having something to complain about is untrue, insulting, and shows that you have no idea about where I'm coming from.

It's from "Macross Generation," which was a radio drama, and it's sung by Tomo Sakurai (who played the character "Canary Minmay" in story). EDIT: Oh, and you can get it on "Macross Generation: Legend of Eternal Song."

...except for the fact that it sounds dated and lame?

Oh, Kronnang, you dear little troll, you...

*deep breath* IT'S A FREAKIN' PACHINKO GAME! IT SAYS SO ON THE SITE!

I'll take that wager. How much do you want to bet?

But this is what people in this thread are saying they WOULD LIKE to see happen...a Robotech unburdened by the past. My feeling is then it would cease to be Robotech, and the reason to put the name on it is for sales value. But the sales value in the name is negligible...so why bother? Maybe I really AM having trouble communicating tonight...
-
So, no Protoculture. No old characters. No old story concepts or ideas. Why burden it with the name Robotech? If it has nothing to do with the series, why saddle it with a title that will turn more people off than on? If there were millins, hell, even tens of thousands of people clamoring for a completely new addition to venerable Robotech brand of epic storytelling </sarcasm>, then I could understand. But there aren't. Even in the niche markets of anime or sci-fi, Robotech is a VERY small niche. What's the point of continuing it at all?

Um...I was talking about SDFM. I'm with Ginrai. Macross 7 is a good show; it's not my favorite Macross by any stretch, but it's a lot of fun.

There will always be the TV ads on youtube...and screen shots.

And again, since the "Robotech" brand name is not well-remembered (or well-liked), why bother to use it at all? It's like saying, "Well, we're thinking about making 'Yor: The Hunter of the Future Part 2.' But we don't have access to any of the characters, designs, or story concepts of the original 'Yor.' So we'll do something completely different and hope that the ten or eleven people who remember the original 'Yor' fondly will go see it, and the rest of the populace won't be turned off to seeing a sequel to something they never heard of (or didn't like) in the first place." If it's going to be completely unconnected, why connect it at all?

It's a pachinko game, I tell you!

I still don't get it. If someone makes a Robotech show that has no connection to the original series, none of the same characters, none of the same concepts (except, of course, giant robots)...is it really still Robotech? Or is it just another giant robot show?
-
Oh, come ON! What could be more grounded in reality than giant blue- and purple-skinned humanoids, planes that turn into robots, and huge freakin' battleship robots punching the lights out of space cruisers?
-
I don't really want to get all itemized, because, to be honest, I was confused by your first response, and I was confused by this one. I *think* my original post was clear (and I read it again to make sure), so all of this "Why didn't you say so in the first place"...well, I did say so in the first place. And I'm curious as to why you thought I would be leaning towards saying Macross is a household name. Because i can't find any place that hints at that. So, either my communication skills are worse than I thought, or your reading comprehension is. I'm honestly not sure which it is.

Don't get too excited...it's just a pachinko game.

The father of one of my high school friends wrote that movie. They moved to a much nicer house a couple of months after it was released.

R.I.P. Jim Carroll. I'll leave it to someone else to make the obvious joke.
-
That's probably what he's most famous for, isn't it? Sad, sad, sad... Anyway, enough hijacking of the thread about the star of "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything. Julie Newmar."
-
I'm more sad about Jim Carroll's death, also reported today. "Basketball Diaries" was a phenomenal book, and I liked his poetry and music, too. I saw him reading and singing once at McCabe's guitar shop in 1993, and a couple of years later, I met him at Tower Records on Sunset. He was a great talent.

Did you not say that if they got away from Macross characters, then it would be better? Well, they DID get away from Macross characters (all except one) and it still sucked. So it seems to me that by saying SC's failure had nothing to do with Macross characters is arguing for my beliefs...so of course, I agree with you here. I don't believe I suggested that you brought up Frontier. I brought it up, because I think it's in HG's interest to keep the confusion level between Macross and Robotech high, so they can leech off of the success of any new Macross series. As I said, though, I may be wrong about that. I'm not sure. I agree. Did I say that Macross is a household name? If I did, I was wrong. So...you yourself state that most people don't recognize Robotech by name or by footage. So why is the name valuable? If they come up with something entirely new and unconnected to the original series, why saddle it with a dated, lame-sounding name that most people will not remember? Why not just forget about Robotech, "the little series that couldn't," and move on to something entirely new?
