And if I were in your shoes I'm sure I'd do the same. But you're right...I shouldn't have phrased my earlier response as kind of a "How to talk to Memo" post, but rather as a "How I talk to Memo" post. And he hasn't been bad...TO ME. Like I said, I can't speak for anybody else. But if he wants to be malicious about a children's cartoon...let him. It doesn't affect what the majority of us do over here. If he wants to turn on me and ban me from RTX, that's his right, since he pays the bills. Until that time comes, though, I have to give him credit for playing fair with me when he is under absolutely no obligation to.

To be frank, ANYONE watching it is going to feel a little lost...unless they've read spoilers for the novels. It kinda throws you into the story without much explanation. I'm sure all will come clear as the series progresses, so it's kind of an entertaining bewilderment...but still, it's pretty unclear at this point what's going on. Without having seen Zeta or Double Zeta, though, you will lose a little more grounding than those who have seen them, but rest assured that anyone watching it without the aid of Wikipedia is in pretty much the same boat you are.

I think the problem is that Memo's got kind of a sly sense of humor that most people miss. Certainly, he has tried to bait me, but I taunt him right back (in a good-natured way) and everybody's smiling at the end of the day. So when he shows up here again, instead of getting angry, really READ what he's saying (if you can understand it, that is ), and you'll probably see that he's having a bit of fun at our expense. Just give as good as you get, and don't get mean-spirited about it, and you'll probably see it, too. By the way, I should probably add that I'm not defending some of his more egregious statements and actions...I'm just saying that he could have come down hard on me if he had wanted to (RTX is his site, after all), but he hasn't...even though he and I disagree on pretty much everything (except that the woman playing Yuki in the upcoming Yamato live-action film is pretty damn hot. We're totally on the same wavelength there).

I actually enjoy talking to Memo. I can't speak for anyone else, of course, but one of the main reasons I stick around on RTX is because I'd like to lead by example and disabuse people of the notion that there's some kind of war that is engulfing both fandoms. I don't think the war exists...I just think there are some fans that ACT like it does. Nearly all of the people I've come across at RTX have been friendly and engaging with me. Even Memo. Admittedly, we usually end up talking about Gundam far more than we talk about Robotech or Macross...but hey, it's a start.

Enh, no offense, but I think you're putting too much thought into it. Happy Penguins is often acerbic, crude, and ruthless in her insults. Anyone who has seen her posts realizes this. As such, anyone who gets offended is just doing it because they like feeling butthurt, not because they're actually offended. I'm hoping Doug will do the adult thing and just shrug it off; there's no sense in acting like Life's Delicate Child over something this silly.

The Underrated/Overrated SF films thread....

Historical accuracy is overrated. Look at Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1. Nearly none of it is accurate, but it's probably his most perfect play. -
Clash of the Titans - remake teaser
Gubaba replied to Vermillion21's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Whoa there, Pardner! I think he meant the 2-D version of this new remake. In other words, in 2-D, it would look shiny and expensive, but it 3-D it looks murky, because that's what the 3-D process does to movies. -
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Riki-Oh yet...because nothing says "f*ck you" like ripping out your own intestines and trying to strangle the other guy with them.

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time
Gubaba replied to JELEINEN's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Oh, lots of them are "bad in a good way," especially if they were made in Italy. But, look at it this way...if you walk into a video store with your girlfriend, and she says, "Hey, let's rent a random film noir from the '40s!" or "let's watch a random French New Wave film from the '60s!" you have a pretty good chance of getting something good-to-great. If she says, "Hey, let's rent a random post-apocalyptic film from the '80s!" or "Let's get a random slasher movie!" your odds of getting something worthwhile plummet drastically. -
On RTX, I suggested that people stop complaining about him and just tune him out if they didn't like him. Actually, what I said was: Well, those who imagine themselves persecuted often get to the point where they merit ACTUAL persecution. And he feeds off of the attention. If everyone is ganging up on him, he can feel embattled and beleaguered, and righteous. If no one is ganging up on him, he'll try to provoke people to the point where they will. But he's been banned from the most important Robotech forums, as well as Macross World. His podcast is the only voice he has. Wanna take away all his power? You know what to do. And then Happy Penguins said: but hit men are expensive =[ Personally, I think HP crossed a pretty big line there, since Robotech fans are wont to go off half-cocked a lot of the time, but it was still obviously a joke. Doug is smart enough to see that, so I doubt he'll throw a big weeping hissy fit about it.

I guess Rhade missed all that "Well, the Bodalzaa Fleet has been defeated so let's jump ahead two years" stuff.

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time
Gubaba replied to JELEINEN's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I thought it was common knowledge that ANY post-nuclear war movie from the '80s (except for 2/3 of the Mad Max Trilogy) should be approached with caution, if at all. -

I wouldn't criticize anyone for your Buffy example, but if someone saw, say, The End of Evangelion without without seeing the series, I'd probably dismiss their review of the movie. -

Still, a universe in which the supreme being looks like Milla Jovovich is a universe in which I want to live. Seriously, I bought that part hook, line, and sinker. No suspension of disbelief necessary. -

"Megan Fox is greater than overrated"...I don't get it. Does that mean she's underrated...? -
I don't have the Evangelion Chronicle magazine, so I can't compare...but there are three books. The first one ("Side A") covers episodes 1-13, and has character pages and mecha pages (most of the main characters and Evas get two pages each. i.e, two pages for Shinji, followed by two pages for Eva-01, followed by two pages for Rei, etc.). Then there's a two page timeline and two pages about the Second Impact. After that, we get the "Episode Guide." Two page synopses of each episode, followed by two pages of "Check Points": added material and information. Then it's the "Goods Collection" in the categories of DVDs, CDs, action figures, and garage kits. The second volume ("Side B") follows much the same organization (including different pages for each of the characters and mecha...just fewer of them than the first book had), except it covers episodes 14-26, and the two movies (no Rebuild information here). The Goods Collection covers character figures, Gashapon, the Soul of Chogokin collection, dolls, "Human-scale figures" (eww...), and "Apparel." The third book ("Illustrations") is a massive collection of all the original art from the magazine. Since it looks like most of the artists from Eva Chronicle went on to work on Macross Chronicle, you can imagine how good most of it looks. You can see the books here: http://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?_...amp;x=0&y=0

They'd be foolish to. What looks good in a cartoon (or comic book) rarely looks good in live action. And really, everything SHOULD be updated. And updates means change. Again, I find it funny that so many Robotech fans approve of Macek futzing with Macross (because that produced a TIMELESS CLASSIC) but now DEMAND that WB not futz with Macek's futzed-up version. Isn't it ironic? Doncha think?
-
Hmmm...no offense intended, but it sounds like another patented Robotech conspiracy theory... This is why I prefer Macross fandom. We like Macross. Some of us don't like Macross sequels that have numbers in their titles. Some of us think all the jpop sucks, and we should focus on the Valkyries. Some of us really like the jpop and STILL think we should focus on the Valkyries. That's about as complicated as it gets, which is fine by me.
-
Y'know...it's times like this that the hardcore Robotech fandom seems like a bunch of gossipy old women, spreading rumors, nursing grudges, and planning bitter vengeance against sections of the fandom they don't like. I'm not trying to paint everyone with the same brush, since there are some reasonable people in the fandom...but backstabbing and personal attacks seem to be par for the course. It all seems pretty silly overall.

Source? 'Cause sorry, but I don't buy it. HG's modus operandi has, time and time again, to use the fans' enthusiasm and hard work without ever paying them for anything. Why would they pay Memo to do something he'd already do for free? You're just learning this now??? This shouldn't come as a shock to anyone at this point.
-
I imagine they'll collect most of it into a book or two when the magazine is done, as well. That's what they did with Evangelion Chronicle.

And as Sylvain White said, not only is it not greenlit, it's also not on the fast track to getting greenlit.
-
(Actually it was Mav who estimated it would be greenlit shortly, but whatever. ) And yeah...dramatic experience...? WHAT dramatic experience? He's done a direct-to-video "erotic thriller" (I think...that's what Trois 3: the Escort looks like, at least), a direct-to-video slasher movie, and a not-very-well-received dance movie. Oh well. At least the guy's got range. He's made bad films in a variety of genres.
