You should be able to find them easily. Disney was so frightened by the competition he represented that they scooped up the rights to his stuff. Initially, they did a kind of half-assed job releasing them at first, declaring that the world didn't care. But then his film Spirited Away started winning film festivals all over the place, so they released that in the US, where it won an Oscar for Best Animated Film. They released the rest of his back catalogue soon after that. And yeah...there are some figures and things like that...no transformable robots, but a there are non-transformable robots (from Laputa). Mostly it's smaller collectables...keychains, plush toys, gashapon...that sort of thing.

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind Castle in the Sky Laputa My Neighbor Totoro Kiki's Delivery Service These are his early films, and (I think) the best way to get into his work. If you're in the mood for something a little dark, watch Nausicaa. If you want a full throttle fun action film, watch Laputa, If you feel like something sweet tinged with sadness, watch Totoro. And if you want something that it just plain charming and adorable, watch Kiki.

REALLY??? You need to correct that as fast as possible. Seriously. Hayao Miyazaki is THE great anime director.

Have you picked up any of the CDs yet? Most of 'em are DAMN good.

Maybe...or else they'll go with what's "safe" and discourage risk-taking and innovation.

No, VFTF1, I think you make a good point. Every industry goes through its phases... Most of us here, I think, could be classified as mecha fans; we like our anime to have giant robots or power armor and stuff like that. And after the "real robot" boom of the '80s (and after the Japanese economic bubble burst), there was a real lack of robot shows out there...from about 1990 to 1994, I lost interest in anime completely...nothing really grabbed me. And even since then, I've been pretty selective. And then when I was IN Japan in late 2007/early 2008, well...I saw Eva 1.0, and I sampled a lot of series (generally on late-night TV or on Animax), and none of them really grabbed me ("Denno Coil" came close, though). Nothing, that is, until Macross Frontier Deculture Edition aired (on my birthday, no less). So yeah...most of what was out there didn't seem terribly interesting to me. Which is fine, since I'm not an "average" anime consumer. But it follows logically that if there's more stuff out there that I like, there's more stuff I'll buy. Personally, I'm glad there isn't...I spend too much money on anime already.

Really? He looks more like Jigglypuff dressed up like Judge Dredd to me...

I don't really get the whole "Focker is an obnoxious American" thing... To me, at least, pretty much everyone in Macross seems pretty Japanese, and Focker most of all.

Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome
Gubaba replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Ah, your question... Would you believe that it's really just that Chief Tyrol's in love with Boomer? Don't get paranoid, man...it's too early in the series for that. Plenty of time for paranoia later...- 696 replies

Keep going...it gets better. Then worse. Then better again. A few times. And wow...gosh...you remind me of myself about eight months ago... Let's all be nice and show spacemanoeuvres the same consideration and kindness that was shown me, okay?- 696 replies

That's pretty much what I did. And then I saw it a second time a couple of days later. I would've seen it a third time, but Odaiba Gundam called, and I couldn't disobey... By the way, if you saw Kara no Kyoukai in Ikebukuro, I wonder if this will look familiar... -

That's how I felt when I went into the theater to see Eva 1.0...turned out it was fine. 2.0 was a different story, however... -

Seconded. When Evangelion 1.0 came out in theaters, I resisted viewing the camrip. Two months later, I was in Tokyo, and got to see it in a plush movie theater with a huge screen and great sound, and it made for a truly awesome experience. The good ones are worth waiting for. -
Anime survived the bubble burst of the late '80s/early '90s...let's hope they can make it through this crisis, too...

Gawd, that's bad...like peeking through your neighbor's window to watch his TV... -
That sounds like a lot of work for something that isn't really worth it... EDIT: And again, you'll run into the same problem that EVERYONE runs into when trying to compile Robotech information...everything is a fanfic. Where are you going to get the stats from? "Official sources"? WHAT official sources? There's nothing in-depth about Robotech, unless you want to use the RPG books, and they're full of errors.
