The Transformers 3 Thread--A Michael Bay Thread
Gubaba replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Going to see Harry Potter twice, eh? -
Of course, the easy solution is not to be a Robotech fan. Like, at all. It works for me, and it seems to work for Keith and VF5SS.

Ouch. By all rights, you shouldn't have any friends.

Any other "Thing" fans out there?
Gubaba replied to HappyPenguins's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If it took over the fetus, couldn't it have taken over her just as easily? This IS the Thing we're talking about, after all... -
Each book so far seems to cover about two or three episodes, often by mashing some events together. The latest episode was #8, which covers the first part of "Bye Bye Mars." I think you're overthinking it...

Thank you. Now I know what to say to anyone who voices their opinion that Southern Cross toys should be made. EDIT: Additionally, an oldie but goodie...I offer it to anyone who wants to use it:
-
Okay, so not up to snuff. By "anime magic," I mean: do the mecha's proportions change when it's in different modes? Are the legs thicker when it's a robot than they are when its a hovercraft? Stuff like that. Proof of this?
-
Does it look good in all three modes? How much "anime magic" went into the original design? (These aren't loaded questions. I'm genuinely asking.) Maybe they don't need one, but up to this point, they've always used one. I assume it keeps costs down.

No, I didn't. Which is why I said "FULLY TRANSFORMABLE." And anyway, it's rather ugly, isn't it? No. You said HG isn't throwing money at it. I said that it failed here, and it failed in America. Failing in Japan gives HG a precedent of failure, and also means there's no real secondary market to fall back on, and no Japanese toy company willing to work together with Toynami. In other words, you say it's irrelevant, and I disagree.
-
I don't think it is. You want Southern Cross transformable toys, yes? And all the Toynami transformable toys are based on ones already created for the Japanese market. With no fully-transformable Spartas toy to model from, I'm not sure Toynami can engineer one affordably. What does ADV have to do with it? Again, I was talking about Japan. Huh. Does that mean I should expect a Hasegawa Fire Valkyrie...?
-
If it picked up such a massive audience, where are the sequels? The merchandise? The pachinko games? The only people in Japan who know Southern Cross are big Macross fans who heard it was incorporated into Robotech, and that's pretty much it. It failed to pick up an audience here. As for Robotech fans, I'd suggest that most people want Sentinels, not because it has the Southern Cross links, but because it has Rick Hunter in it. That's just my suspicion, obviously. I suppose I could go and ask, but if RT.com is representative of the fandom, then it certainly SEEMS like the show is less popular than the other two.
-
Well...let's be frank here. The show was cancelled in Japan, and failed to pick up an audience later. Yes, it came out on DVD, but it didn't do very well. The majority of Robotech fans aren't terribly into it, either. How much money put into it do you think it would take to get people to like it?
-
The difference of course being that RT.com members can CHOOSE to leave when it gets too crazy/oppressive/whatever...

Shoji Kawamori "created" Macross: load of bull?
Gubaba replied to danth's topic in Movies and TV Series
To me, it's not really a contest, more an effort to figure out who did what. I mean, these people made work that we all love, right? So why not give them a little thanks back? -

I liked it, ending included. But I'm notoriously uncritical when it comes to Macross, so don't listen to me. Nah, Tomita wrote "Romanesque." But I do think think the Ohnogi episodes, however badly animated, were good for character interaction. Grrrrr... Yeah, that's pretty much what happens. -

And yet, Zero was written by Hiroshi Ohnogi, who also wrote some of the best episodes of SDFM ("Kung-fu Dandy," "Micro Cosmos," "Drop Out," "Viva Maria," "Broken Heart," and "Private Time"). -

From what I understand (which may or may not be correct), Mikimoto was given a choice to do either Macross 7 or Macross Plus (it probably would've been impossible to do both...too much work), and he chose 7. I've never heard of any feud between Kawamori and Mikimoto. (And I liked the Plus designs, but that's neither here nor there, really...) -
Shoji Kawamori "created" Macross: load of bull?
Gubaba replied to danth's topic in Movies and TV Series
Well...I'm not sure that that appraoch necessarily works, either. A lot of the writing staff from SDFM, for example, went on to write Macross 7, which Kawamori was barely involved in (beyond coming up with the idea for the story). I like to think of SDFM/DYRL/FB2012 as just one of those "right place, right time, magic is made" kind of moments that is utterly unreproduceable. Hell, look at the Beatles...none of them made solo albums that were anywhere near as good as the music they made together. But I don't think anyone's gonna say, "John was only good when Ringo was collaborating with him." EDIT: As for Perfect Memory, no there's no translation online. A lot of the info about the making of Macross, though, ended up getting retold in Robotech Art 1. -

From my understanding, Keith is essentially right. Ishiguro was mostly around to convince the studio execs that he could keep the young'uns in line, while in actuality, he pretty much let them do their own thing. But yeah...this is a really interesting question, because there's no real definitive answer (although we know that Kawamori came up with both the Valkyries and the city inside the spaceship, which was an idea he had been wanting to do for years). But a couple of questions: First, why is Kawamori the one who does the episode-by-episode commentary in the Macross Graffiti book? Second, why in interviews with the staff, do the other staff members usually defer to Kawamori? Third, why was he the one who wrote "The Lost Two Years" for Macross Perfect Memory? -
