Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII

I read somewhere that around 40% of the F-14's lift capacity came from the pancake fuselage itself. Never seen a snipped-wing F-14 in flight before though. -

It's definitely on my bucket list, but I'm on a secondhand Grand Cherokee budget right now. -
It's obviously not the MG, but it looks a bit too plain for a PG. I'm waiting for the product demo. That should at least show it in a better light. Maybe what I don't like about it is it doesn't quite have the super-Katoki proportions. MG Unicorn is super tall and not all that wide. And like 80% of the kit is legs. I think it'll look a fair bit better at the product demo, when they have it in higher definition imaging.

Dude, IEEE 1394 is basically just a standard for serial bus data transfer, with numerous similarities to USB. It's not even as complex or inelegant as CAN Bus in cars if it uses IEEE standards. If that's the case, it's just a matter of replacing avionics gear with more modern equipment. As if that's never happened before. I just don't see the big deal. It's not like it's some crazy stealth material, shape, or exotic control surface. It's not something that is part of the airframe, it's just computers. -

The smaller wings are a concession for the stealth attributes the USAF is super hard-on for. Bigger wings present a higher stealth profile, and there isn't much you can do with design to cut it, leaving only expensive stealthy materials to absorb radar, and even those will only do so much. The Navy is less concerned with high passive stealth and more concerned with a usable aircraft, so the 35C has big wings. The Air Force doesn't absolutely need the big wings, so they opted for the higher-stealth tiny-wing variant. The B variant shares similar wings because cost cutting. This isn't an F-22 where we can make it out of unicorns and gold-plated turboencabulators, it does have to meet cost requirements. (Which it's still having a hard time with) -

Yeah, no reason to trade your Volkswagen for an Audi. I think part of the fantasy of the Countach was that it wasn't really great. It put flair and style above all else and wowed 3 whole generations. If I want something technically amazing and mass produced with fantastic reliability and no focus on style, I'll buy Japanese. (If I don't care for the reliability in that grouping, and instead want some wallet-breaking pricetag, I'll go German) You buy Italian because you want soul and style. The Gallardo has neither. All it has is a Lamborghini badge. It's not as striking as a traditional Lambo, it doesn't drive as poorly as a traditional Lambo, and it feels too teutonic. What's wrong with a supercar being finnicky and unreliable? It's like saying the Millennium Falcon should be white-washed and rebuilt by Germans. Sure it'll technically be better, but it won't be the Millennium Falcon anymore, it'll just be another light freighter. I'm gonna stick to my classics. Everything today is backwards from what it's supposed to be. Italian cars are reliable, German cars are inelegant, Japanese cars lack quality, and American cars use turbocharging to exceed 100hp/l with less reliance on union labor. It's all too foreign. I want my Italian cars like my dad's old X1/9: on jackstands more than on the road, but stylish as hell. I want my German cars like my neighbor's E34 525i: with attention paid to every detail, and the elegance of traditional German engineering apparent throughout. I want my Japanese cars like my old Pathfinder: so reliable you forget how to work on it. Actually, I'll take the improvements in American motoring. Yes, I'd like to keep those. This Fusion is leagues better than any of mom's Tauruses. -

References everywhere! Master in Guyana, the Lightning Gundam is not just for show, Ral is 35 years old (created in 1979 for the original, which was 35 years ago), "In the middle of a practice, everyone forgot Ral", St. Odessa Girls' School, the girls' school uniform collars are Zeon collars. Another fun episode. I think the battle damage works roughly like I thought, wherein the lowest level doesn't actually cause damage, just disables play, the next level up pops the kit apart at joints, causing non-permanent damage but wearing out the gunpla's ability to fight and maybe causing minor cosmetic damage, and the top level causes damage like we saw in the original series. Based on how we've seen A, B, and C levels now anyway.- 971 replies

They sold for a fair bit new, but they're all used now, and you'll see them sitting at, around, or below 100k. Good luck getting into a Countach for that much. What I don't understand is, what's wrong with an exclusive, handmade Italian car? Especially now that they're owned by a company that makes enough profit from any one of its other marques that it could fund Lamborghini indefinitely at a sizeable loss? This isn't Nissan where I'm sad to see the French buggering a legacy with poor design philosophy, this is an icon. It's a history of passion and posters in the bedrooms of children. Every boy I knew as a child had a Countach poster. And that was in the late 90s, after the Diablo had replaced it. I've never known anyone with a poster of a Gallardo. It's just not the same. And sure, maybe nothing can be the Countach again, but do we need a mini-Lambo? Is that what Lamborghini is now? If you can't afford a Lamborghini, you buy the half-price mini-me version from Audi? This is an Italian company. I'm going to justify my statements about it, accordingly, by saying "it just doesn't feel right." -

All of that post completely ignoring the fact that Boeing is still building F/A-18s, and that the Block III shares very little in fact with the Block II architecture, which is practically a different plane in vaguely the same shape as the F-18. But really, you're saying the reason the F-35's avionics upgrades can't be applied to any other plane is because they don't have super-USB? -

Which is why I was hoping to go with Wing's wings. They're big enough that I think they'll fit well on the Unicorn. Though, to be honest, I was planning on doing this in MG. If you're gonna go gimmick, go full gimmick. So in other news, I've really been enjoying this pregnancy announcement meme that's been floating around. So much so I made these:- 971 replies

It's because there's a lot of people in North Dallas with ~$100k to blow on a flashy car, and that's all it takes to get into a Gallardo. And then, when it comes due for the first service since they bought it, they realize they can't justify the cost of servicing a Lambo, even if it is just an Audi, so they sell it to the next poor schmuck. -

Lamborghinis are supposed to be an event. One of a very few of that car, handmade, and fairly exclusive. Not the mass-produced homey-looking R8-chassis affair that was the Gallardo, let alone the Spyder. The Gallardo is essentally an Audi R8 V10 with a vaguely Italian-looking body. It's not the exciting affair that Lamborghini used to be. The first time I saw a Diablo, I was amazed, and the first time I saw a Countach (also the last time) I was simply gobsmacked. I've seen 3 Diablos in my life and one Countach. When I see a Gallardo, my reaction is "oh hey a Gallardo." I've stood on a showroom floor that had no fewer than 25 Gallardos of various year sitting on it, around 100 grand a pop. I have never seen another Countach in person. I have seen more Gallardos than I have Tesla Ses. And they sell the S new here in Dallas. -

Likewise, I don't think you're dumb at all- the statement was just to point out the fact that this argument could turn into a name-calling squabble at any time, and that'd be counterproductive. I try not to trust marketing people, but then there aren't any numbers the public is privy to, just claims from manufacturers. Ultimately, the F-35 has to grow and succeed. It's cost too much to just drop it. We're stuck with it now, whether we like it or not. -
