Fair enough. I think you'll be happy. I love this airbrush. I really cannot say that enough. It just keeps giving me good results. On the topic of German Grey, I find that for most gunpla, it's the right color for all the frame work. Or at least it's very close. I usually mix some red and orange into it to make it a bit warmer. I probably use more German Grey than any other color. It's useful for frames, detail painting, and darkening other colors without hurting saturation too much. It's the only color I keep 2 jars of at all times. I think I'm gonna buy another GM Sniper K9 as soon as the local HTUSA has one in stock, and blow some German Grey on it. For Cold District Type reasons.

What anime said. Get it piece by piece if you have to, but the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS really is worth every penny. Sure the G23 is only $20, but it really is a $20 brush. And you definitely want a compressor with a moisture trap and regulator, and a tank makes for steadier output pressure and it lets the compressor catch up to you, then turn off and cool down. I'm in love with my setup which is the two-piston version of the compressor anime linked, and this HP-CS I just got.

Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
SchizophrenicMC replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
While I agree that Scarlet Johansson was cast because of star power, I'm also still not convinced you have to have asians playing cyborgs. The whole point of Ghost in the Shell is, that's not the body she was born in, it's the body she chose for herself. It's an exploration into "what is humanity" and the enforcement of laws surrounding that question, protecting people who are affected by it. So I'm totally not bothered by a white woman being cast in the role of a character that doesn't have any racial identifying bodily traits, because her body is a robot. What bothers me is the meatier concerns about the movie. The director is a cheap-to-hire no-name whose only credits are junk, the studio is known for cash cowing as a rule, and the main character's actress was cast solely for star power to sell tickets. There's no way the story will be written as an adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, there's no way it'll be directed as anything but an action thriller with some terms from Ghost in the Shell thrown in to describe things that aren't exactly what they were in the original, and there's no way the actors will have the familiarity with their characters necessary to play them at all in-character. This movie isn't being made out of a legitimate interest in showing an artist's perspective on a popular and evocative story, it's being made by a studio who wants a quick buck, with a team assigned to it. I'm willing to guarantee this movie ends up among the ranks of Dragonball Evolution and The Last Airbender, because of that.- 751 replies

Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
SchizophrenicMC replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I don't think you necessarily have to cast Asians in movies with Asian source material. Especially in a franchise where most of the major characters have robot bodies, and the lines of humanity are blurred as the main plot point. However, I do think the cast and crew all need to be very familiar with the source material, in order to create a work that fits within the scope of the original story. You can't get portray a character, unless you're familiar enough with the character to step into that character's shoes. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was so memorable and fantastic because he spent a lot of time getting closer to the character, understanding the Joker's rationale and motivation. And the Dark Knight films came out as good as they did, because the production team spent the time and effort to create a story that surrounded some main ideas that are very important in the Batman universe. Which is what I imagine will be the failings of a Dreamworks Ghost in the Shell film. No way Scarlett Johansson is going to method-act Kusanagi, and no way this no-name director or his faceless production team are going to write a story that's close to the source material at all. This is a cash-cow film, like Transfourmores and Teenage Mutant Ninja a-holes. They'll use some of the made-up words from the franchise, create some new art direction for familiar things, and generally butcher the story with something generic. Hiring white actors to play cyborgs is the least of my worries.- 751 replies

I made an ineffective paint booth out of a rubbermaid bin, a range hood fan, and a dryer vent tube. Total cost was less than $20, because I got the range fan off the curb. I intend to make a new one with plexiglass sheet, an automotive airbox, and the same fan. The current one is only ineffective because it creates positive pressure behind the fan, which doesn't move out the tube and instead moves along the sides. I hope to use an airbox to mount an automotive air filter and create a better separation of positive and negative pressures. Also, airboxes have provisions for tubing to direct fumes away. Alternatively, if I find a whole range hood, I'll just use that with some plexi. Could use plywood, but it'd be heavier and not as fun to look at. Still be cheaper than a hobby-specific booth.

I'm not going to complain about white-washing the cast, not with this series where everyone is part-robot. What does worry me is that the Major won't be called Motoko Kusanagi, and that the story will be over-westernized.- 751 replies

You'll regret going tankless, at least with low-end airbrush setups. Not only does the tankless 1-piston put out less air, but it pulses and has to run constantly while you're painting. Makes for difficult painting and overheating is a thing. This is what I got though I guess the price has gone up in the last couple of years. It's a touch expensive to buy the compressor, but you really futureproof yourself with it. I don't know if I'll ever grow out of this compressor, which means I'll never have to spend more money to buy another one. If you get a tankless single piston from a cheap brand like Master, I can guarantee you'll outgrow it pretty quickly, and you'll end up buying something even more expensive, plus the tankless you got originally. I'm not saying spend Iwata money just yet, but while I've put down my Master airbrush for better things, I still love my twin-piston compressor. This thing kicks some serious ass. And unless it breaks, which doesn't seem likely considering how trouble-free it's been, and how effortlessly it feeds my painting air needs, I doubt I'll ever replace it. Hell, now that I'm running this Eclipse at low psi, I could probably run 2 brushes on it without overextending it. And it runs at about 85dB, which isn't silent, but I can comfortably have a conversation over it, and the brush itself is louder anyway. I don't really know anything about enamel washes for accent work, but it shouldn't affect the Krylon at all. I still recommend the naphthanol to clean it with though, because the slower reaction will give you a bit more forgiving experience until you're used to how the enamel wash goes on and comes off.

My first airbrush was a Master G23, with a Master 2-piston 1/3gal air compressor. The compressor is sufficient, and the brush was fine until the seals began degrading. Not great, but good for a beginner. I think I picked them both up as a set from TCPGlobal for $140. I still use the compressor, because it runs quiet, cool, and puts out more than enough air for brushing, and it has a built-in moisture trap and pressure regulator. As for your enamel wash concerns, are you just trying to do panel washes, or like weathering washes? If you're just panel lining, thin the paint super thin with enamel thinner, but do your cleanup with lighter fluid. The enamel thinner won't damage your plastic at all, and it won't dull the finish. Also, while I can't speak to other brands, it doesn't affect the finish of Tamiya acrylics. I recommend lighter fluid for cleanup because it will strip the paint a bit more slowly, which makes it more forgiving for cleaning up excess. It's also much, much cheaper than hobby-brand thinner.

Amon's costume shouldn't be all too difficult, really. The only part that wouldn't be accomplished through sewing is the mask, and masks are fairly easy. The really hard part will be imitating Steve Blum's panty-creaming voice portrayal.

Two words: Beam Javelin I will say, though, that SEED kits have a terrible time with antennas. Every one I've owned has lost part of, or broken part of its antenna. Including my PG Strike.

You can definitely tell Kou Otani was the composer. The music really is great. And while the story is a bit generic, and the dub laughable, I think New Century/Zero should have gotten a second season. It was a lot better than Chaotic Century, with its horrible pacing and inability to address the overarching plot in a meaningful way through nearly the whole first season. Especially with the way it ended, with the Blitz Team winning the Royal Cup and rising to Class S. That could have set the stage for an even more epic second season. Or at least something like Build Fighters Try is to Build Fighters. I don't know if I agree about the Bandai vs Koto thing though. If there's anything I've learned, it's that Bandai does not put their all into their non-Gundam kits. I think the only difference would be, it'd be a bit easier to keep the Zoids in stock, what with Bandai's superior production capacity. Well, that and the art direction wouldn't be as distinctive or detailed. Say what you will about Kotobukiya, the HMM Zoids do look mechanical-cool, and that's an art style that Bandai doesn't really play with too much. I prefer the mechanical look of the HMM Zoids, and I think if Bandai did them, they'd be slightly-more-detailed posable lookalikes of the old Tomy Zoids. You know, with the anime-esque design aesthetic. What I do wish is that Koto would get it together and make a Koenig Wolf already. I'd buy 3!

Yeah, the cup has a lid. Most gravity-feed brushes have one. Historically, I haven't been keen to using the cap, because my old brush had to run at a high enough pressure that it'd waste a ton of paint and I'd be refilling the cup really often, and the lid just would not come off sometimes. But this Iwata sprays evenly, even at 8psi, so I'm using a lot less paint, and the cap is easy to remove. I just cannot praise this brush enough, I really really love it.

Every time I see the DX I want it more. Unfortunately, my wallet is too empty for it right now. In other news, I ended up running the entirety of Zoids: New Century/Zero in the background while I built my Nirvash. This Eclipse is amazing. If only Bandai's non-Gundam kits were any good.

Well, I prefer gravity-feed brushes, and the bigger the cup, the better. Plus, the HP-CS is very well-reviewed. And what a beauty this brush is. The craftsmanship is apparent in every aspect. I'm in love. In other news, I got a lot done on the Nirvash. I'm gonna clear coat it with Future tomorrow. Mind my shoddy painting skills. I lack patience, practice, and a working left hand.

Imagine all the places that granular salt found itself in. All the places it'll never come out of. Apparently there were some customer cars there. I'd be furious. -
Here you go:
-
Buy it. Definitely buy it. I'm in love with this brush. It paints so well, and it's so easy to clean! Here's what I got done on the Nirvash today:
-
I've never had any issues with anything I've thinned my Tamiya or Vallejo paints with. I've historically used 91% isopropyl and Aztek brand thinner, but I went ahead and let the test cup of Vallejo primer with Tamiya X20A thinner set up all day, and even at the end of the day, it was fine. It shot through the brush just fine too. I really really really like this Iwata. It is so much better than my Master was. It sprays more evenly, it's easier to clean, there's no slop in the action, and it's just a joy to paint all day with. I even mixed some custom shades, I was in such a good mood for paint. What a great way to ring in the new year.

Well, after letting them sit mixed for an hour, I can categorically say, all that nonsense about Tamiya thinner gumming up Vallejo primer is nonsense. I thinned Valleyo Grey Primer 2:1 with Tamiya X20A thinner, and I let it sit in the mixing cup for the last hour or so. It's still got the consistency of milk, and shows no signs of curdling at all. Now to work up the courage to start painting with my new brush.

I would, in a heartbeat. There's nothing more fun than a tossable car. Though, maybe at that rate, I'd get an old Miata because the only thing more fun than a tossable car, is a tossable car you don't worry about breaking. -
I got an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS for Christmas, so I decided I'd try and tackle my Nirvash typeZero Spec2. This should be fun. The dry-fit begins:
