Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
SchizophrenicMC replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Fifi usually parks at the Cavanaugh Museum here in Addison, but it's never been parked while I've been available to look at it. Last I saw her, she was still at the Commemorative Air Force museum. I bet if I caught her at Cavanaugh they'd let me take a look inside; my dad used to work for Jim Cavanaugh, and the guys all know about my grandpa's work with C-121 Constellations. Actually, one time a B-17 touched down at the municipal airport down the street from my house and they were more than happy to let us aboard to take pictures because they knew my grandpa by name. The restoration aviation world is a small one indeed. -
Paint indoors. I do. This is the compressor I've been using up until now. It's a .17hp two-piston direct-drive compressor with a 3-liter tank and a maximum pressure of 60psi. It broke. So I did some fiddling. This is a Husky 1.7hp V-twin belt-drive compressor with a 33 gallon tank and a maximum 165psi rating. GO BIG OR GO HOME Actually it was pretty good. I filled up the tank to about 160psi and ran my airbrush for over an hour at 8psi and the tank came down to about 110psi after all that. I didn't run the compressor while I was painting, because it would have popped my breaker, but it's actually only about 75dB when it's running. It's also less expensive than any tanked Iwata compressor. And no I didn't buy it for this purpose. I've owned this compressor for a few months for automotive and pressure casting purposes, but push met shove today. And the results were glorious:

Given that the seats were cool before the cabin was, it would seem they are air conditioned instead of just ventilated. -
I liked that the kids' last name was Mitchell, because my last name is Mitchell, and there aren't a lot of Mitchells in film. The only other one I can think of offhand is Lt. Pete Mitchell, of Top Gun fame. But my favorite part was when

So, in more exciting news, I test drove a Mustang GT today. Mmm torque. But I was just kicking tires. I can't afford a new Mustang, nor do I really want one. Air conditioned seats were nice though, I'll give it that. -
If you're using an Eclipse, you should be able to set the regulator just under 10psi indicated and get good results. Do this by running the compressor and pushing the air trigger on your brush and adjusting the regulator down until the needle is just under 10. Should put you in the 5-8psi range and give you consistent paint flow. If you're using a Master airbrush, you may have to play with higher pressures because they're just not as consistent as the Iwata brushes. The alternative is, you can install a more precise regulator (they're just threaded onto standard fittings) and use that with your brush. The compressor will run itself regardless of what regulator you run and if it's the same as the 2- and 4-piston compressors, it'll run until the tank is at 4 bar then cut off, and restart when the tank reaches 3 bar. If I'm not mistaken the Master/TCP compressors all use a standard 1/4" NPT fitting for their regulators.

Well the front of it is very Alfa and the rear of it is very Alfa, but the side is just a 2-series GranCoupe. They should sell it in America. In other news, Lego announced it will sell a licensed Ferrari F40 kit. My birthday's in a month. Anyone wanna get it for me? -
It's funny you should mention that. Midway through painting a batch, my compressor died. I think the shaft that connects the motor to the compressor crank snapped. Motor spins, but the compressor doesn't run. What a pain. But I've had it for about 3 years now, it's painted a few kits for me. Also spent some time as a compressed air duster. Still, not an ideal situation. I do have that compressor in the garage. That 33-gallon 2-piston belt-driven 160psi compressor that weighs 120lbs and is too large to wheel into my room, and which I've no doubt would pop the breaker for the 30 year old aluminum-wired circuit for my room. Also I don't have the fittings I need to attach my airbrushing regulator to that behemoth. What a pain. I still have a lot of stuff to paint, not to mention clear coat on this guy. At least the airbrush itself is working flawlessly. Kept consistent paint flow all the way to the very end. The Eclipse HP-CS really will flow paint down to none PSI. Hikuro, did you get a compressor with a tank, or a tankless unit? Tanked compressors are much less touchy about pressure, and will let you run consistent low pressure through the regulator while the compressor keeps the tank topped up at high pressure.

So I painted the pilot figure for the first time ever. I have no idea how the Japanese guy who makes the demo model for the instruction booklet does it. Also I polished up my Eclipse. God what a beautiful thing. Such a joy to use. It never jams, it never leaks, it never clogs. And it's so easy to clean. I should have gotten one years ago. Work on the Nu Ver.Ka continues. I'm holding off on photos until I get it done. It's really shaping up though.

And still no PG Launcher or Sword strikers and still no PG Ground Gundam and still no PG Zaku R1. And still no PG Unicorn in my collection. Damn I need more gunpla money.

I'm working on this Which currently looks like this When I'm done, this Nu Gundam will be just for show.

Decided I'd finally start building my Nu Gundam Ver.Ka today. I've had this sucker since they first started making them.

The sound effects were entirely unnecessary. -
Hmm. On the one hand I've always wanted a Launcher Strike, but on the other, Aile Strike is the definitive Strike. All the same, that detail though. I need the budget to get both the MG and the Dragon Momoko.

So it occurred to me that I've never owned an MG Strike kit. Anyone have any experience with the Ver. RM? I'm thinking about picking it up and shuffling it to the front of the backlog. (To go in between my PG and RG Strikes)

If you want to see Top Gear sans the three stooges, watch Fifth Gear. Or don't, it's not the least bit entertaining. (Despite consisting of Old Top Gear presenters) The fact is, there was a chemistry about the presenters that just doesn't occur every time you pair some journalists up. That's what we watched Top Gear for. If you want consumer advice, MotorWeek has been running longer and does it better, but it's stale and boring. If you want a half-assed attempt at being Top Gear, watch Fifth Gear. I just don't see Top Gear ever meeting that standard those three set for it, ever again. Rumors have been floating around that Netflix is seeking to pick up Clarkson, Hammond, and May for a Netflix series. That could be interesting. No BBC rules and plenty of funding. Yes. Could be interesting. -

Oh hey look some new bullet sponges and finally the addition of stuff that was obviously omitted from the launch game, and would you look at that, only the full cost of a new game. frakk you, Bungie, you reprehensible sellouts. Activision puppets. -

Speaking of valeting, I quit my job as a valet at the local Honda dealership. After a string of disagreements in operating ethics, they shorted my pay this week by a whole 12 hours, and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Fortunately I have my finances put together well enough that I have a good 3 weeks before I have any bills due, so I have a little bit of time to get the revenue stream flowing again. Now would be a very good time to get that recruiting email from IBM Softlayer. -

On the topic of the GM crash, it's a double win for me, because I don't care for the Camaro, and because I hate Jalopnik's Gawker Media clickbait bullshit journalism. But you could tell he was going to crash as soon as he crossed arms. That guy's an idiot. Who let him behind the wheel of a track day prototype car? -

I'd have just gone through and done the whole audio system if I cared enough about the car to put new speakers in. With that said, the pictures I can see suggest to me you have a metric dick-ton of sheet metal in that door which isn't even covered by the useless plastic anti-moisture sheeting, to which you could drill a couple of pilot holes and run some self-tapping sheet metal screws into to mount your crossovers. Mounting it to the door itself, rather than the panel, also improves serviceability greatly, not only for the audio system, but also for the door panel and the other components of your door, which require removing the panel for access. If you absolutely have to have your crossovers in the door, that's the route I'd go. If you don't absolutely have to, your options are limited only by how much wire you want to buy and snake. Remember that speaker-level output isn't susceptible to interference, and can be run for long periods alongside wires carrying current from the vehicle electrical system without inducing noise. My Jeep's setup has both front crossovers sitting next to the amp, under the rear driver-side passenger seat. I ran all 8 front speaker wires along the driver side of the chassis, up the A pillar and onto the dash for the tweeters, then back down the passenger A pillar to reach the passenger door speaker. (Obviously the driver door speaker left the group of wires at the grommet for its side) Was it kind of a pain? A little bit. I was installing a new amp and redoing all the speaker wiring at the time, which is why I opted to go that route. If I ever change components, I can just swap wires and the hard work will already be done. I eventually intend to find the 5.9 Limited sound bar and add another set of component speakers, which will be run the same way. Don't half-ass two things, whole-ass one thing. -

Yeah that's pretty common. They just slap a couple components on the tweeter to make a basic high pass filter. Leaves the woofer muddy, and doesn't give great results to the tweeter. What kind of car is it? -

Why are you trying to glue your crossovers? They should have some screw holes for mounting. I usually either mount crossovers with my amp or screw them down to the sheet metal in the door. If you have enough room to glue the crossover behind the door panel, there's enough room to screw it into the sheet metal. By the by, and this is just semantics bugging me, if you had factory component speakers (ie with separate tweeter and woofer mountings) you still had a crossover, it was most likely just integrated into one of the speaker chassis. For example, a ZJ generation Grand Cherokee Limited has a tweeter-mounted high-pass filter acting as its crossover. Of course, there was no low-pass filter for the woofer, so it didn't get the full effect of a two-way component system. Leave it to factory audio to suck. -

Look into Wix or genuine OEM for your vehicle. Fram is junk, but you don't have to go all the way up to AEM to get a quality filter.
