Well, from an engineering standpoint, the Variable Fighter series was designed originally to give an overall combat advantage against a species of humanoid standing near 45 feet tall on average. Thus, a new fighter plane was designed to A) replace the aging fleet of planes currently in service with ones that utilize the new Overtechnology, B) Allow for low-speed, low-altitude hit-and-run strikes, and C) allow for humanoid-to-humanoid ground, air, and space combat. The Bipedal design of Battroid mode allows for it to maneuver a ground-based area. Cities and such. It also allows for the ability to fight a war as if it were man-on-man. The bird-like design of GERWALK allows it to vector its thrust down for VTOL, low-speed lift assist, and the ability to use some of the qualities of Battroid in a more aerodynamic design. The conventional design of Fighter mode means it can perform in the same ways as today's fighters and there won't have to be supplemental training for air combat. Finally, since all 3 modes are flight-capable, Fighter is often the least-used, due to its inadequacy against the Zentraedi's Humanoid mecha. GERWALK is used for low-speed strikes, and moreover, for quickly decelerating. Battroid is used most to fight the Zentraedi, since by design, it is the most effective against that type of enemy. Battroid can perform the same roles as the above two, though not as effectively. However, neither of them can be a Battroid.

Macross: Variable Fighter operations
SchizophrenicMC replied to Remko's topic in Movies and TV Series
Way I see it, the whole thing is improbable. The sub can't provide the massive amount of oxygen that several fighters would need for an engine launch, plus the entire crew. Not without resurfacing VERY often. The VF-0 is stated to be able to run for 2-3 minutes with the intakes closed. That said, the SV-51 likely has comparable performance. This tells me that it can perform an underwater engine launch. However, they'd need a lot of oxygen to start with. If they use this oxygen up and leave the sub, that oxygen can't be recycled within the boat, meaning it would have to resurface often. The Compressed Gas method requires space that they don't have. -
Um... I've seen a VF-1's legs move back and forth between GERWALK and Battroid, giving a VERY weird sight... It was on solid ground, so...

Texas is so big, it'd take 12 hours to get across the border for AUTHENTIC Mexican food. Who cares about crossing the border though? I can cross the street on a Saturday for AUTHENTIC Mexican food, yaknow?

I live in Texas, 30-40 hours away!

No offense, but Basara is actually on my "I don't care about these characters" list... I'm the only one, it seems. I didn't like 7 much, though. It lacked sense that the others had. If Fighter was the most useful, we wouldn't have VARIABLE fighters. It's fastest, but least useful. It can't hover, it can't walk, it can't save the lady... Battroid, GERWALK, then Fighter. There's a reason it was like that on the transformation selector panel. _______ |---[]--[] |---|---| |---|---| []--|---| B--G--F |

You know you watch too much Macross when The thought of stopped fazing you LONG ago

Battroid It has flight capabilities, like the other modes. While it's not as good, it's the most maneuverable, since it tends to hover in one spot. It has the entire mech combat aspect. This is the essence of the mecha anime: Giant robots fighting other giant robots. It has ground combat capabilites. This is what differentiates it from a fighter. It can provide light artillery roles that a plane can't. Finally, fear factor. The thought of a 45-foot tall metal man is enough to scare off most people's attacks. Would you fight something of the sort? Can you seriously tell me that if it was your enemy, you would try to fight it? Yet GERWALK looks like a very strange fighter jet, and there's little to no fear of fighters, as a flak field will take one out very quickly. You know not of the abilities of this metal man, nor what weapons to use on it. The Unknown is the scariest of all.

Hey! Robotech is good, in that it had Macross somewhat English (Okay, not really...) and it had its own story that made enough sense with 3 unrelated series plugged together. I'd rather not get into that fight, but Robotech is not Macross, and it never tried to be. All that's left are some idiot Americans, Mexicans, Canadians, and the occasional Filipino that say "Cool, Robotech!" about the Macross Zero video, and it irks me so... You know you've watched too much Macross when You say "Where's the Buddweiser product placement?"

You think there's no such thing as too much Macross Your entire Christmas wishlist is Yamato Valks You're trying to get a PSP for the sole purpose of playing Ace Frontier You're so messed up in the head, you think there is a South Ataria island, and an alien space ship is finishing reconstruction there...

I didn't realize either of you were from Oregon... I'm not from Oregon!

Wow... I'd like to see that effect. Any chance of a redux of the current release? Anyway, not many good programs are free. Only ones I know are OpenOffice, GIMP, WMM, and... Um...OpenOffice?

Back to the drawing bored? I'd be bored, too, if all of this wasn't working! So... No luck, eh? Damn. On a somewhat related note, we cool, Hik?

Macross: Variable Fighter operations
SchizophrenicMC replied to Remko's topic in Movies and TV Series
That's... Disturbing... Now that you mention it, it's pretty damn well-armed for a first-gen VF... Why isn't GERWALK good for landing? It has 3 lift points, good maneuverability, is easier to keep up with your mobile target with.... And actually, that's it... On a slightly off-topic note, I was talking with my dad about Macross tech yesterday (He was a Robotech Fan) and today I walked into his room, and sure enough, he's watching Macross Zero Episode 5... I thought he was too Robotech for Macross, but apparently he'd been watching it for what part of the day he'd been home. -
Moving on, Macross owns anything Korean, or American, or British, or anything else!

Macross: Variable Fighter operations
SchizophrenicMC replied to Remko's topic in Movies and TV Series
Anime, that's EXACTLY what I've been saying this whole time. To pull into the Pugachev's Cobra, one must be moving faster than the stall speed. In most fighters, this is well above 200 Knots. The move puts a lot of stress on the pilot. Also, it's hard to stay stable, by any measure, for long. The lift fans would push the forward (Top, now that it's vertical) section more than the rear, pushing it over backwards. If you attempted to use the nozzles to prevent this, you lose all lift. There's a reason the supersonic SV-51 was only in the Cobra for mere seconds: It's just not a highly controllable move. The way I see it, Gerwalk over the landing arm. Then, it attaches to the bottom. From there, the plane transforms into fighter mode. Finally, the arm rotates the end vertically and pulls the now-vertical plane into the sub. -
Leave it to Korea lol Maybe I should ask my Korean friend if he knows anything about this. He is a mech junkie, after all.

I threw up in my mouth a little there...

Macross: Variable Fighter operations

VTOL sucks fuel out of the tanks very, very quickly. Given, the SV-51 has VTOL capabilities, however it can't land in a horizontal position on that submarine. Also, its thrust vectoring method is different in that the nozzles simply rotate downward. The F-35 uses a set of 2 rings that rotate laterally, moving the nozzle to a down position. Moving on, I don't see a problem with transforming GERWALK to fighter while attached to a docking arm. Considering only its legs move out (if it's got the arms still retracted, as we see in almost all valks.), the arm could attach to the fuselage, the legs retract, the arm moves it into a vertical position and retracts. GERWALK seems more maneuverable and controllable than conventional VTOL systems. -
For me to watch it: Needless Violence Needless Attention to Mechanical Detail Music FAN SERVICE! On a related note, Minmay's shower scene was the first recorded case of fan service. Add to that, she's a singer, and the anime she's in has the other 2 requirments, Macross is perfect!

Macross: Variable Fighter operations

Hobbes, you make a great point. Even in 2059, according to some sources, the VF-1 is still in service. 50 years later... Though we probably don't see them because SMS is paramilitary and testing the VF-25 to give feedback to NUNS... -
Macross: Variable Fighter operations

F-35: Air flows around lift fan shaft as it is sucked towards the turbine. The fan causes air to flow downward, giving upward thrust. Harrier: Air flows into engine, where cold air in the front is directed out of the front 2 thrust vectored nozzles. The rest of the air continues into the turbine, and hot air flows out of the rear nozzles. Yak: Similar to the F-35, except they use 2 fans. Please note that while the F-35 shown is an A model, therefore CTOL only, however it was the only schematic picture I could find. The Blue lines on the Harrier one show cold air flow, red is hot. This doesn't mean the same on the other 2. I didn't differentiate because the fans don't share their intake with the engines. ..........bmp untitled.bmp -
