No, because the characters are pulled from different time periods. You know, they 'transcend time and space' thanks to the ruins on the planet summoning them via the fold phenomenon. the plot is a fun jumble of fanservice but don't expect any concrete answers or resolutions to things that aren't already known.

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
Tochiro replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Item descriptions and dimensions are usually provided by sites such as amazon. And for me, the surprise of opening it is half the fun. For me an unboxing vid is like youtubing the final climax of a movie you already have tickets for. Anectodally, the majority of people who watch such vids have apparently already decided whether to purchase or not. But to each their own. Its just another internet phenomenon I personally find useless (also rather western-oriented, interestingly enough. I seldom see similar videos posted by Japanese fans).- 516 replies

Maybe it's just me but I've never seen the point/purpose of unboxing vids. I don't get why they are apparently so popular.- 516 replies

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Tochiro replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
What, I thought Project A-Ko was the new hotness! But how about something like Excel Saga then? Thats no-where near as old as some of the other titles here and parodied a LOT of stuff, Matsumoto Leiji in particular. Not necessarily. You forget, DVD print runs are not as limited or expensive outside of japan. I can walk into a DVD store (JB hi-fi) in Australia and pick up Madoka on bluray. On the same shelf they have Mahoromatic amd (until recently) Mospeada. The next section will have Nana next to Nausica. And these are usually available at a decent price. The project A-Ko boxset has been available for $30 or so for a decade. Also, theres been a surge in classic titles released outside of Japan. Lupin the 3rd FINALLY JUST got a DVD release. As did the Rose or versaille. My last dvd order included Rose of Versaille, Mad Bull, and Kids on the Slope. Just because something is an old production doesnt mean fans today cant get their hands on it legally. -
What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Tochiro replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Finally got around to finishing Dennou Coil. Wonderful and charming little series thats vastly underrated. It's the type of thing that Ghibli might've done in an alternate reality where they still made unique and thought provoking animation. This show has future nostalgia and whimsy by the bucket and the 'hige' (whiskers) episode is utterly brilliant. Grab the R4 box from Madman entertainment while you can. It's well worth it. Other than that, just saw episodes 18-22 (Ch.6) of Yamato 2199 and loved it (am off to see it at the cinema a 2nd time tomorrow night). The show continues to be not only the greatest anime remake ever, but also one of the most fun space opera's that has come out in a long time. Final few eps drop in August and I can't wait. Also saw episode 1 of GitS Arise and was much more impressed with it than I thought I would be. Am almost about to drop Attack on Titan if it doesnt pick up the pace, but doubt't that I'll have time to start a new anime series until Yamato 2199 ends in August. -

Well, I've had a day to think about Ep.1 now. Overall, I enjoyed it. A lot more than I expected. As a GitS fan I'd rank it as the weakest animated adaptation to date, but that still puts it above 90%+ of animated SF out there. Some general spoiler-free impressions: -Animation was gorgeous, as to be expected from Production IG. -Cornelius did a better job on the soundtrack than I expected or that the previously released OP led me to believe. The man is no Yoko Kanno (then again, who is) but his score captures the feeling of of the world really well. In fact I left the cinema and immediately went to buy the OST only to find that a full album has yet to be released. A single (OP/ED) is available for 500yen from the Jpn itunes store and a weird MP3 speaker box with the BGM on it has been released. Its literally a speaker box the size of 2 cigarette packs. No way to get the music off it onto your comp or music device. very weird. I expect a full album will be released properly once the OVA is finished. Oh and the ED (Jibun ga inai) on 5.1 cinema sound is an amazing experience. -Action was done well. A younger, less experienced Motoko means she isnt as invincible as she was in previous iterations. It doesnt take a tank to take her on anymore. She can lose. there are more 1-on-1 confrontations as a result. -Motoko's backstory is different to SAC. -The show almost works as a prequel to the original movies. The similarities between the two that many people picked up on in Motoko's character design extend to the themes explored in ARISE as well. Being set in Japan, not Hong Kong though means that, like with SAC before it, its one of those 'if you look at it from a certain angle and disregard certain discrepancies then it almost fits' kinda things. -I'm not a fan of the new cast. Maaya Sakamoto as Motoko is by far the best performance of the show. She imitates many of Atsuko Tanaka's typical inflections and line delivery but adds the uncertainty and surprise that the younger version of the character needs. Ikyuu Jyuku as Aramaki is passable. Everyone else feels off. Kenichiro Matsuda's Batou had me wanting to find the guy and bitchslap him. Just because a characters voice is deep and gruff does not mean you have to read all your lines in the same tone! I daresay I'll get used to it, but damn I missed Akio Ohtsuka. -The setting is a little too NEAR future. Scenes of modern day-looking shinjuku with some extra tech. recognizeable ATMs and tech next to full body cyborgs creates a dissonance in immersion. -Plot was well-done. Was relatively self-contained as well. I really enjoyed the way it was paced and structured. General spoiler Key visual for episode 2 which drops on November 30:

Some updated news regarding the cockpit exhibit: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=39176&p=1055808 Also, Macross Worlders in Osaka are going to be getting a new 'Oshare Macross' Exhibit - an 'Alto Festival.' This will run from July 15 to July 28 at Nanba Marui One. No further information on goods or guest signings as of yet.
-
Some more news has trickled out regarding the cockpit exhibit. Firstly, an app. is currently being made which looks like it will superimpose a picture of the cockpit over what is going to be a Tenjin pic. Development is not yet finished, but so far its looking like this: Secondly, Hidetaka Tenjin will be holding a talkshow and signing event at the cockpit exhibit on July 27th. Each will be limited to 50 participants. Finally, the canned bread 'kan-cho' illustrations that were revealed previously will also be made available as art cards. These will be available at the exhibit for 630yen each.

I think that must be the trailer for a 360 game of the movie...because theres no colour in it. WHERE ARE THE COLOURS?!?!?! Going by the trailer this looks pretty terrible, sigh. Suit design is poor. Suits just dont look dynamic or colourful enough. Jun shouldnt be a tomboy. She also needs pink. Someone forgot to colour the God Phoenix. Far too much emo. Fights and SFX look barely a cut above recent sentai films. Sorry for all the negativity. After Yamato, Gantz and Kenshin being such good adaptations, this looks disappointing.

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
Tochiro replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Bandai Visual doesnt have the rights to the old OVA sub tracks as far as I know. So they put what they could on the disks without incurring any additional (translating, timing, etc) costs. The subs on the movie are the ones I remember from back in the day (although I dont have access to the old release of the movie edition atm - anyone feel like comparing them?). One thing I found surprising (being able to understand Japanese now, unlike in the mid-90's) is how many lines actually get completely skipped in the sub track. Nothing that breaks it, but a lot of small details missed that's all.- 516 replies

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
Tochiro replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Not saying that it does. I am saying that in my opinion its terribly sad and depressing to see such a reaction after Bandai FINALLY does right by foreign fans after 30 years of nothing. Because sales and foreign reaction to these releases DOES influence their policies regarding future releases. Oh well, at least you actually bought it. Kudos for that. If you sell it, your loss. And given the visual quality of the BD, I sincerely mean that. 17850yen recommended retail price. Amazon JP preorder knocked it down to 12600yen.- 516 replies

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
Tochiro replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Wait, let me get this straight. This is a Japanese release of a show unlikely to ever see a BD release outside of Japan. Bandai was under no obligation to cater to anything but the Japanese market yet the went the extra mile and included an English dub on all four OVA episodes and English subtitles (that aren't hard subbed! Yay!) on the the remaster of the movie edition and even (if its consistent with past releases) made it region free and..... The fact that the dub on ONE episode is different you are thinking of selling it? Not taking into account that many here in the forum predicted that this would be the ep 4 dub that would be included because of the precedent set a decade ago with the R2 DVD box and even before that with the International Version LD? Despite the fact that, apart from a gorgeous remaster and having the show the best it will ever look you also get genga reproductions, a booklet with never before seen artwork, and new Hidetaka Tenjin box art? Despite ALL this, you are thinking of selling it due to the dub on a single episode when, by your own admission, you already own the (vastly visually inferior) DVD version if you ever want to listen to that particular dub anyway? ........ There's just no pleasing some people I guess.- 516 replies
