  1. Maybe to diversify genetic pool. Yes, they had genetic engineering, but nature may still come with something unsuspected. FV
  2. "Story" and "Character" are two Big Things which are often quoted in a way which doesn't mean anything. After all, a collection of battles may still be called a story. And Nazi style villains whose purpose is only to be bad without redeeming factor are still called characters. And no, there was no magic in Macross 7. I have actually read more unbelievable stuff in sci-fi books. The last one I read was Counter-Clock World by Philip K. Dick. Still a worthy reading. FV
  3. It is not like a fuel who enable you mind controlling your mecha is kinda magic, eh? FV
  4. Without the music and the fantasy you will end up having just another action flick. Talk about dirty pleasure... FV
  5. After Macross 7 you still think Kawamori would want to make a depressing series? This is the ultimate trial for present series, where authors' willingness to instill an underlayed meaning clashes with audience's burning desire to just see corpses flying in an old fashionably way. And it is still surprising how a series or a movie with lots of deads gains instantly people appraise. As for a TV series (like the new Macross series should be) violence can go as far as TV allows. This is the limit. You can still force TV limits, but nowadays lot of people have done it, you can no more shielding with things like anti-censorship and "children needed to know". This is how things are, so just imagine a serious series without dead people, blood and sexual issues, and that should be OK. FV
  6. I actually liked Macross 7 from the start. It sounded original enough to deserving a view. It would be nicer if it had better graphics, but the CG City Seven in the OP was really neat. I repeat, I found nothing wrong in the way Macross 7 started. Well, actually there was one thing wrong. You should never shows a clueless commander, commanders should always mantain a charismatic aura. Evangelion did it right at least with this. You could start the series with the second enemy attack, showing the first in a flashback, but over all this is a minus. FV
  7. I believe it was inteded that for Mayans a song is like a kadun, except it makes noise, so "song of destruction" does not relate to Zentradi army, it is just the sound of explosions. I do believe the whole beacon thing, though. It would strengthen the saga. FV
  8. Energy weapons are over-rated. http://www.journal.forces.gc.ca/engraph/Vo...n1-p41-46_e.pdf The resulting energy applied to the target is 35,800 MJ/m^2 for the current US 120 mm DU penetrator in the M829A2 round. This beats the crap out of RX-78's beam rifle Btw, VF-0 lasers are chemical? It must be so, without a thermonuclear reactor. Still, I've heard there are 100 MW chemical lasers, and yet you need more than a second to shot down a plane (which is obviously lightly armored), but just because you blow the fuel tanks. Maybe the VF-1 has even more powerful lasers. Anyway, Shin was a clever boy and aimed directly at Nora. As for graphical lack of damage, maybe they thought it was just useless modelling it. FV
  9. Maybe he has a door knob dungeon in his house... There's a sticky door knob kadun attached to Agent ONE. FV
  10. LOL, that's me (I just notice it) Btw, informations were pasted from http://www.animeigo.com/Liner/MACROSS.t, the official site I cut all the credits. You don't know what I thought when I found on the net AIPHOS stood for Artificial Intelligence for Probing and Handling Organic Synthesis. Too bad it was actually AFOS FV
  11. Merry Christmas to all from Italy! (and may Santa bring some health to Egan ) FV
  12. There several things I'd want to say, but now I don't have time... I'll just paste this article written by a Macross 7 lover on a jrock blog. I found his site years ago; I traced it back but it seems that now his older archives are down, so I'll paste it here. There's no need to agree with what the article says, but it may be useful to know some unknown cultural inferences. First, a couple of random quotes... "You've been singing your heart out until now. But it's up to the listeners to make what they will of it. Maybe it worth while to think a little about why you've been singing, and why you're going to keep singing." "The enemy had sound protectors on, so how could they hear the music?" "It was not just the music. Their hearts touched the Protodevlin." OK now before you think I'm going all crazy on you...where do you think those quotes are from? I'll give you three guesses... And if you know me at all, you won't need to guess. Those quotes are, of course, from the anime Macross 7, my favorite anime. Why is it my favorite anime? Any anime dealing with music and jrock automatically makes it to the top of my anime list, and Macross 7 is as jrock-y as you'll get. Yes, I know this is a Jrock blog and not an anime one, but let me explain. Macross as a series touches upon and explores the effect music has on human (and even non-human minds), but Macross 7 takes the concept to a whole new level. Why sing? Why make music at all? Why does music exist? And how can music, a collection of frequencies that vibrate in the ear, touch souls so deeply? Macross 7 explores all those question in great detail, and I think that it has a great relevance to the jrock world. In fact, Macross 7, is the only Macross series to base itself around a jrock band instead of idol pop stars. Macross 7 is also the anime which explores the power of music to the deepest extent. Coincidence? I think not. There's something about rock music that is able to take music to a new level of feeling unprecedented by just any other kind of popular music. That's what jrock, and rock music in general, are all about. The right combination of notes and lyrics can touch a human spirit deeper than just words or actions ever could. Not that pop music is bad. After all, Lynn Minmay's songs stopped a war. But Fire Bomber's songs stopped an invasion of a galaxy. Hard to beat that. More than anything, I believe that Japanese rock music carries the music of hope. In a country with one of the highest suicide rates in the world, that may seem a little odd, but that's probably precisely why jrock lyrics are the way they are. Compared to the endlessly angsty and depressing and death-filled lyrics of English rock artists, jrock lyrics can be poignant, beautiful, and full of optimism at the same time, without sounding corny. Read the lyrics of three of Fire Bomber's most sung songs: Planet Dance, Holy Lonely Light, and Totsugeki Love Heart. The lyrics spend little time bemoaning sad fates and cursing life. Why make a bad situation worse? In an age where cynicism is the fashion, it seems to me that it's braver and more innovative to make songs like that than to compose the same angsty stuff that everyone else is singing. Interviews with jrock artists all reveal an intrinsic desire to shape the world around them with their music, to bend it and mold it and reform it according to their sound. Malice Mizer. Lareine. L'Arc~en~Ciel. Gackt. Even bands like Glay. Why do they do it? As Gackt said, "making the song come alive" is the ultimate goal. The rock band in Macross 7, Fire Bomber, is also out for something different. The overarching theme of Macross 7 is that music is far more powerful than words, war, even death. Music is what binds the entire universe, and universes beyond ours, in harmony. Through Fire Bomber, the creators of Macross 7 show us what Macross is really about. Lynn Minmay was only the beginning of a musical revolution that stretches across galaxies and time and space. I believe the reason that the creators of Macross 7 based it around a jrock band is the same reason why I like jrock: in an age of less-than-stellar bands and artists singing just for the money (especially in Japan, where jpop artists appear and disappear overnight) there's something about jrock that refuses to let go. Jrock isn't just about rock. It's about music. And that might just be why Macross was so incredibly popular in Japan...and why it receives poor ratings in the West. That might be why jrock bands seem so much more sincere than other rock bands. Because they believe in music. I bet you if you go out on the street and ask people about the power of music, nine out of ten people will either give you strange looks or laugh. Music? Music is nice to listen to, to dance to...but there are so many other things to do besides obsess over music, right? Macross 7 is cheesy because it talks endlessly about music, and why does the singer guy sing the same three songs over and over anyway? Where's the plot? Why does Basara sing the same three songs over and over, each time with a plea "Listen to my song! Why don't you understand yet?" Why do artists like Gackt sleep two hours a night, preferring to stay up and write a song? Why did X Japan keep going for so long when they only had three albums out in almost two decades? Today, the message in the music industry seems to be quantity, not quality. The more songs an artist releases, the more popular he or she is going to be, apparently. Sadly, it's true. I'm not going to name names, but I'm sure many of you can see for yourselves. And even more sadly, jrock seems to be going that way as well. As the great names begin to fade away, new bands are springing up as thickly as weeds, and just as ephemeral. But when it comes down to the bottom line, it's not about the lyrics, the singer, the guitarist, or even the band as a whole. It's about the music. If the vocalist doesn't work well with the band, it's all over. If the melody doesn't fit with the lyrics, it won't work, no matter how catchy the tune is. That's what Macross 7 is about. And in the end, it wasn't even because of the music. It was because the listeners felt the hearts of those making the music. It was because they understood. Do you understand? Listen...listen to the music. - If you will listen to my song...it's so easy... - FV
  13. It sounds like the Macross counterparts in Super Nova project... (I still think VF-19 is a "funny" design though...) Btw, VF-19 Kai had this zigzag edged opening (like F-22's weapon bays) in the wing root when it was transforming... I thought it was strange, now I see it's actually a stealthy design FV
  14. By the way, there is something that VF-1 has and VF-0 don't, according to Compendium: CCV Control-Configurable Vehicle an aeroplane shaped with mass distributed as to have maximum maneuverability FV
  15. You are right. It was even in this picture. FV
  16. People talked about the telescopic head, about the errata on the number of its miniguns in the Compendium, about the way it stores the gunpod... but I didn't hear anyone talking about the protective visor over face sensors Ivanov lowered before getting tackled by Roy. Will this mecha ever stop being unbearably cool? FV
  17. Cliche-y. Remember to always keep your girls out of the front. If they die (almost certain in a battle), you'll soon die too. This is a basic rule of all kind of works. It sucks for men modern girls are so emancipated they are itchy to go to the front. (this wasn't meant to be a sexist remark, it was intended to make fun of a common cliché) What kind of thinking is that? What if Shin is meant to be on the SDF-1 and Kawamori makes all other Macross series without even a mention of him? FV
  18. The V-BR-2 had even more antennas. Since it was a reconnaissance mecha, it makes sense it was highly stealth (in addition to amazing speed like the Blackbird) or at least had some strong ECM. I doubt that the VF-1 is devoid of countermeasures. I mean, what's the importance of flare and chaff if you can shoot down missiles with lasers In Macross Plus OVAs there was a scene where Isamu's VF-11 reload a clip. The clip was shaped as the upper side of the barrel (a half cylinder). Maybe it could work in the same way. FV
  19. Well, maybe he could become so skillful it could beat everyone even with an inferior mecha. At the time I think it seems still unlikely, though, but with Kawamori it could happen. But even if Shin gets a VF-1D, the enemies will update their mecha, so I think they will manage to stay superior to the VF-1. It's only up to Shin winning against Nora. FV
  20. To put it simply, in Macross Valkyries always move as fast as budget allows, so different budgets created some inconsistences. Blame the producers, not Kawamori FV
  21. The Monster is sure, the VF-1 too. I mean, Shin now needs a VF-1D The SDF-1 seems very unlikely, unless the AFOS folds the entire island. And I thought Macross Zero was supposed to show how incredible the VF-1 was I think they are supposed to be retro-fitted in all Valkyries, especially the active stealth. I wouldn't be actually surprised to hear active stealth was a concept thought for SDF Macross. I made a pic to show my point. By the way, I think even the regults were supposed to have some active stealth. Well, if the VF-1 really shows up, I think it'll have a GU-10 gunpod, just to show some new design I clearly remember of having seen a VF-1 discarding an ammo clip (magazine) and reloading another one in the first episodes of Robotech, though. Now that I bought Macross DVDs I have rewatched the scene and the VF-1s were the same in the same position, but there were no clips. Was it a scene from later episodes re-edited for the earlier ones or was it draw deliberately for Harmony Gold? The VF-1 could have some unseen atmospheric FAST packs without fuel tanks, so it could pack the same missile despite having shorter legs (btw, the VF-0 can carry more missile than the GBP-0S!). That said, the VF-1 is smaller than a VF-0, and that is an advantage. Maybe it was supposed to be even tougher. Also, there is a thing that VF-1 has and VF-0 doesn't: the magic hands! (J/K) By the way, it's really no suprise VF-0 was thought to have some space capabilities: the VF-1s were actually manifactured at Apollo Base in the moon and in space colonies (another Studio Nue's Gundam in-joke) It didn't seem so FV
  22. Shin was Purple One, meaning he was not yet a Max but more then a Hikaru. Well, he recieved the worst part of them: he blowed up his planes and nearly got stabbed by his wannabe-girlfriend, who by the way was the only girl in the show who didn't manage to kick his ass or to punch some fingers through it I really love Zero, I just hope they will make a movie edition where the mechas are always CG By the way, I suppose ASS-1 DNA came from remains of corpses or blood found inside the ship, not from the ship itself. FV
  23. They are pulse lasers. FV
  24. Same here The fansub was given to me by a friend who can see it right in his PC FV
