"Star Trek Movie Syndrome" befalls Macross?
Final Vegeta replied to Winter's topic in Movies and TV Series
Btw, I just discovered there was a plane called Messerschmitt 262 "Schwalbe", it was the world's first operational turbojet aircraft, and well, it was obviously made by Nazis. I think there is a reference to that in Macross Zero, since Ivanov is "Schwalbe leader" (or "Schwalbe-1"?). FV -

I admit I was harsh and I apologize, but I have sources: National Geographic reveals geographic illiteracy (beside this, according to CIA's Factbook, literacy rate in US was last measured only in 1979 - 25 years ago). There is a world wide trend of ignorance (covering also history and other sector) that is spreading. US may lead, but even other states have their education flaws. -O-O-O- This is a debate I didn't mean to do, but in 2001 after 9/11 Arabs showing their empathy for Americans greatly outnumbered manifestations of hatred. For istance, shortly following the attacks, the media repeatedly showed pictures of Palestinians apparently celebrating the attacks, switching repeatedly between these pictures and the pictures of the Twin Towers. Actually the Palestinian celebrations were staged by Israeli defence forces, with the celebrations having nothing to do with the Twin Towers attacks. It is true that many died that day, but in fact they were too few people for such a catastrophic attack. 3000 persons died out of two buildings that can hold up to 50000 persons. Twin Towers were half empty, most people escaped before the towers fell one hour later. 125 persons died out of a building that can hold up to 24000 persons. The Pentagon wing hit, and only that wing, was conveniently under construction. 4 planes that can carry up to 200-250 passengers each, and that day carried from 40 to 80 passengers. Anthrax carrying letter, to kill Americans one by one. 22 infected that I know, some of them was saved. In the letters someone wrote a note suggesting the people who opened them should take penicillin. No nuclear power plant damaged. Is Osama lame or US very lucky? Was Osama's a war or a challenge? Documents released under FOIA offer little doubts. Operation Northwoods Anyway, there a lot of differences but if we take Macross 7 as a war for resources (spiritia), it can be a real story. Well, I know I can't make up for my off-topic, but maybe out of disaster I gained a point over Macross 7. FV -
Macross Zero Official Page updated!

Yeah, but I bet it will be very cool when we see that in action Anyway, it doesn't appear to be a spare weapon but a self-defense close combat weapon just in case the enemy came too close. Maybe it also aids when crossing rough terrains. Compendium says: The original Mk I [Monster] was not conceived to be equipped with a missile launcher on either side of the main body I am not sure this meant the original Monster had claws, but it's an option. Personally though I think the idea came from Escaflowne. Naaah, it will just grab and toss an anti-UN mecha. I am sure Monster will make a brief cameo, but we will feel the power FV -
The Official Aim for the Top! Gunbuster Thread
Final Vegeta replied to Noriko Takaya's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
If there is a Dix-Neuf (19) I would like to see a Vingt-Un (21) (I am not watching Gunbuster 2) Actually, Nadia was made in 1990, Gunbuster in 1988 AFAIK, so it's the opposite. Hey, the original had few references because Gainax did only few works before Gunbuster. I think only Daicon and Honneamise precede it. FV -

That Jihad you are talking about is like the killer bees, it's a fake scare. Iraq is the weakest country of middle-east, and now it would just want to lick its wounds for decades. Iraqis have no business in fighting a war on the other side of Earth. I bet you can't find Iraq on a map (or Afghanistan. Or Japan. Or Italy. Or Great Britain. Well, in fact people who use internet often are better at this, but 11% of young US citizens didn't even know where US is). My suspect is that US people are kept unaware of, among many other things, geography, so they could fear invasions from every other country in the world. All other countries were able to tell US population better than its people. I would like to see a list of all the things US people has been afraid of during their whole history. It's true that all people around the world are the same, but I realized that not all people are told the same things. FV -
You know what? I'd like to see the G-Gundam of superheroes team. There shouldn't be only a Captain America, but also a Captain Italia, a Captain France, a Captain Japan and so on. That would be fun. FV

A J-rock blog, read the article dated Wednesday, June 6, 2001 Slight spoilers, I suppose. You don't need to agree with all he said. True. The best you could say is that there is some common cultural basis due to buddism and confucianism. FV -
It' doesn't matter, just that in Japanese imagery Nazis became the enemy after WWII. Mazinger's Dr. Hell was German, and one of his men was an ex SS officer, and this is just an istance. This don't have any relation with current real world history, Kawamori just perceive that one of the biggest rouge was German, and the other Russia and Israel. Anime don't have a sense in themselves, but a sense that follows the logic of their author. FV

It's not religion, it's music. Macross 7 managed to grab the spirit of j-rock. I don't know if you have ever heard it, but in Japanese works "in the end all people die". Japan has something that Orwell called the "Cult of Death". The spirit of j-rock, with its appreciation of life and joy, is something out of place in Japan which ranks first in suicide rate, but it's there. FV -

I don't know if it's realistic or not... One reason for psychoanalyzing Hitler was to uncover vulnerabilities that could be covertly exploited. Stanley Lovell seized upon one of Langer’s ideas—that Hitler might have feminine tendencies—and got permission from the OSS hierarchy to see if he could push the Führer over the gender line. “The hope was that his moustache would fall off and his voice become soprano,” Lovell wrote. Lovell used OSS’s agent network to try to slip female sex hormones into Hitler’s food, but nothing apparently came of it. Nor was there ever any payoff to other Lovell schemes to blind Hitler permanently with mustard gas or to use a drug to exacerbate his suspected epilepsy. The main problem in these operations—all of which were tried—was to get Hitler to take the medicine. Failure of the delivery schemes also kept Hitler alive—OSS was simultaneously trying to poison him. As you can see, in real world there are things you would never guess. If CIA were to find out that music could have the effect it has in Macross 7, you would have a guy who sings "Support our troops!" to your enemies. FV -
You are leaving, depart! Away from Geneva, everyone! Saturn shall be changed from gold into iron; The opposite of the positive ray is able to exterminate everyone! Before they lash out, Heaven will shown signs. Nostradamus I acknowledged I misunderstood the Compendium and mistakenly thought that Valkyries run on antimatter, but what does it mean that pair-annihilation doesn't provoke fallout? Gamma rays should make things radioactive, maybe not all things but there will surely be some atomic disorder around. It sounds like Rumsfeld saying he'd like to study mini-nukes to see if they could destroy anthrax bacteria (gamma-ray sterilization?). I am skeptic, but I think there might be some serious disinformation going on. Non-lethal weapons are in fact almost-lethal, smart bombs are not so smart and so on. No weapon is ever designed as to absolutely prevent collateral damage. FV

What I've heard is that Macross 7 was supposed to be how original Macross TV continued (had not been shortened), although with several changes. Maybe it's only a rumor, but at least this seems believable. FV -

Reagan was actually an economic disaster. Do you know why gold is valuable? Because is rare. The same applies for money. What happens if someone is given some more money? He becomes richer. What happens if everyone has more money? They are all poorer due to strong inflation. The principle is that wealth is not measured by the number of dollars you have, it is measured by the share of dollars that you have out of the total number of dollars in the system. That also means that if someone is becoming richer someone else is becoming poorer. In the US the richest 1% of households owns almost 40% of the entire wealth. The bottom 40% of US population owns well less than 40% of wealth as they were supposed to do: in fact, they owns 0.2% of US wealth. What did Reagan do? Cut the taxes of riches. While they became wealthier the population became poorer even if they received their tax cut. This is the reality hidden behind tax cuts policy. You can learn it better with this link About privatisation... I smell some evil there, not necessarily but is there. In countries other than US usually public sanity is good and is free. Hell, in Iraq even education to all levels, home and food were free, and I don't know what else. Saddam was a tyrant but he put a lot of money in social expenses. Privatisation means you have to pay welfare in full, and that means you can't have equality since low-income households can't afford to send their children to the better schools, so they can't get a decent job. Also lack of controls on corporations like how Reagan intended (I think it's called "deregulation") may mean you can have arsenic in your water and salmonella in your kid school food as a bundle, because US corporations don't care for anything other than short-sighted gain. It would be good if there were alternatives to government run enterprises, but in no way I'll like full private enterprises of everything, or otherwise corporations will own the government. This is what is happening in the US. Only if you are rich you can become president in US, but if you are rich then you take order from some corporations. I hope I will be wrong but Kerry plans to keep US troops in Iraq until in 2008, right when another candidate will replace him so that US troops could actually remain forever in Iraq. US government cannot allow Iraq or OPEC countries selling oil in euro again. Under current conditions, I would actually like Bush get elected, because he could only wreck the already wrecked US economy strenghtening the euro, but I think people won't have choice in this and Kerry will be elected because otherwise Europe could start thinking of US as a rogue nation. Anyway, one of the several reasons I've heard on why US invest so much in military is that military research and development is paid by taxpayers, and then military hands the projects for free to privates. Privates can make a profit without having paid any R&D at all. Life is easy if you are rich in the US. You should enjoy space turism, since it was paid with your money. On the other hand, if space turism fails the anti-missile shield could always turn into space warfare for global domination. There is always a bright side for US. The Greatest Story Never Told 1952 Korea Estimating South Korean losses, Time Magazine indicates 400,000 civilians have been killed and 100,000 children made orphans in the U.S.'s triumphant, limited war. On the bright side, the editors emphasize that, "out of disaster has grown a tough army of 16 divisions, and a sense of manhood." FV -
Amritas' site has episode summaries. FV

I think the hip joint could stretch the leg on the side while the leg rotates. Anyway, the SV-51 has VTOL, it has two fans under the pilot shield so on the ground it should be easier to transform than the VF-0. FV
-
Actually, it seems legs are artificially shortened. Also there is no proof joints are sturdy enough for transformation. FV

Even in a fictional world it would be more realistic if Russia sided with China and other asian states. That said, obviously Macross, as every anime, forgets a war is always fought to gain something, especially resources, but I can live with that. SV-51's active stealth came from Germany. FV
-
I am not discussing that. It's simply that Kawamori, for whatever reasons, justified or not, perceives the state of Israel as bad (along with former Soviets and Nazis), and so he associated it with the anti-UN (this doesn't mean anti-UN guys are necessarily bad in themselves). I think Macross Zero shows he is not really informed of the current political situation, and I think he doesn't know what a sionist is or what a semite is (ie Arabs and Jews). Just that. FV
-
If Compendium doesn't mention it, maybe there isn't any official meaning yet. My guess is that SW-AG stands for Stealth Wing Armor Generator, since the term was created with 3D VF-X which featured SW-AX-1, an experimental attacker with stealth wings. AFOS maybe is Alien Flying Object Small. The "small" comes from comparing it with the SDF-1. Mind that these are fan supposition, though. FV
-
From a non US point of view, US is filled with black and white movies which are no representative of reality. I don't think Japanese people ever had such manicheic view. By the way, Kawamori made a big error: Israel is US best ally. It would never side with Russia FV

When people collect together because they hate something, the group can last long because common hatred feeds it. When people collect together because they love something, they usually find some other people in the same group loathsome, because all people have flaws. I think it's good to be a relatively small group, because the love for Macross (even considering the chapter Macross 7) is bigger than rivalries between fans. Some other fanbases like Dragon Ball's had more troubles because it was really huge, and some fans were more obnoxious than the entertainment the anime gave. FV
-
By the way, I've always had the feeling that, even if Macross 7 is full of Kawamori's spirit, it is poor of Kawamori's actual execution. I think the speaker pod idea is Kawamori's, but I think most of the cheesiness in Macross 7 is from director Amino. FV

lutesla: Nuclear reactions are more than two. Even switching atomic arrangement of nucleons (isomers) could release a gamma-ray burst. There are several military researches on Hafnium isomer (obviously for bombs), the problem lays mainly in the mass production of the right isomer, which is costly. Someone says you could induce a reaction chain even in sugar... Some informations on the development of isomer reaction (pdf) Page 156, Simulated Isomer Energy Release (SIER), from US military sites By the way, a supernova exploding could fuse elements heavier than iron. This is where gold came. Ewilen: Physics goes as this: Solid -> Liquid - Gaseous -> Plasma. Add heat and you step into the next state of matter. That said, plasma doesn't need to be hot, it can be ambient temperature, but enough heat ends up creating plasma. Fire is low-density plasma, at least that's what I've heard. I've heard it could happen strange things if you put a candle in your micro-wave oven, but I don't recall what exactly should happen (maybe your food won't warm up), so don't try it at home. The explanation in the Compendium is really vague, and I think it was meant that way. Alien technology should be scientific but unexplainable with actual terms. On one hand I have theorized the reaction used in Macross is straight pair annihilation. A type of Overtechnology similar to nuclear fusion. Two nuclei "fuse" together. Pair annihilation differs in that no new nucleus is born. Unlike nuclear fusion however, this energy reaction became an excellent power source Pair annihilation gives more energy than fusion. since the fuel does not necessarily have to be nuclear material and is also easily maintained in plasma state with the use of super dimension spatial theory. The problem with anti-matter is that it tends to anihilate with matter spontaneously. The Compendium indeed mentions a way to maintain it over time. On the other hand, as I said, anti-matter could be the catalyst of a fusion. There should be still some problems with radiations, but I am sure they have found a way. FV
