  1. Episode 2, around 5:04. Actually though there is no proof it didn't explode off screen, and anyway it was clearly disabled. I think the small Vajra are basically the same of large Vajra. Probably they only lack the ability to fold without assistance. Yes, they are likely to have ECA, there is no reason they shouldn't. The large ones are more resilient most of all because they are bigger, it's like the difference in armor between Monsters and Valkyries. I think that it is simply due to CG it wasn't possible to show the large Vajra being somewhat damaged. Bloopers must be counted in when someone try to extrapolate informations. You heard a metallic sound. What if later we discover the sniper rifle is not a ballistic weapon and thus it wasn't possible it made a metallic sound? FV
  2. To act like a power armor. If you notice the ex-gear is truly an exoskeleton: forearms are connected to shoulders, shoulders to spine and spine to legs. When the power is off an ex-gear is even heavy. FV
  3. Maybe authors will state Michel's rifle can hit with adjustable strength, to avoid too much collateral damage after piercing the enemy. Following this reasoning, he just set the strength to low initially. Who knows, maybe he could have even a super shot using up all the energy in his weapon. Although there is always some kind of truth in liberties taken for dramatic effect, Macross Frontier so far hasn't stretched to the point of implausible. When I said Vajra were looking less menacing, I didn't mean less deadly. It is just a matter of morale. Undoubtly there are a lot of sound considerations that explain the differences perceived between initial and present outcomes, which also include amount of footage of VF-171s. A consideration nobody had is also that Vajra were already fighting Galaxy for days, so even though they were winning they were a bit weary. Probably this could be why they didn't have any chaff left. FV
  4. It would be "know" if she said "shitte(ru)", but I think she actually said "shite(ru)" or "Do you do culture?". I think it's meant to be some kind of catchphrase, if you notice she coupled it with a peculiar hand sign. FV
  5. For some reason your animated avatar timed perfectly while I was reading You'd think so, wouldn't you? (pushes back spectacles) But you'd be WRONG, Professor! Dead wrong! (raises fist) FV
  6. Even despite some of these may be preproduction sketches, I am glad to know there are further Vajra types. After episode 7 Vajras look less menacing that they were at the beginning. FV
  7. In 4chan someone said he did (Aquarion wasn't even quoted, it was just said this was the most realistic portrayal of male orgasm) Something else interesting from 4chan: "The late medieval terms basara and kabukimono are originally based on the Sanskrit term vajra (kongo, kongoseki). Kongoseki, which means "diamond," signifies that which can pulverize anything, and has long been used to describe the destruction of preconceived ideas, a tendency also closely related to kabukimono. Kabukimono signifies an individual who takes pleasure in shocking other people with his unusual behavior and appearance, and is similar in meaning to basara." Vajra = All powerful/ destruction of preconceived ideas, Basara = one who takes pleasure in shocking people with his unusual behavior/ appearance, and BASARA is connected to VAJRA. Citation: http://www3.ocn.ne.jp/~tenmyoya/text/text.html This brought to you by Gattai. Does it mean anything? Who knows~ FV
  8. Guess what, this episode was storyboarded by Kawamori FV
  9. Maybe it just bent visibile light Anyway, that was mostly an Aquarion reference. FV
  10. Yeah, but everyone was saying "this looks very super robotish" without getting to the point... By the way, the storyboard of this episode is by Kawamori N-Ger e Q-Rau weren't designed by Kawamori. Also SDF Macross mecha may not count because the mecha design changed after Kawamori's trip to India (pointy feet became a trademark of Kawamori). The Elgerzorene (varauta mech) had evil feet, and I think even the VF-14 had them, although there's not much lineart about it. Only the Saubergeran didn't. Also the YF-21 didn't have them, although it did have 3 exhaust nozzle flaps. The SV-51 had them. Of non-Macross designs, Aquarion Mars had them (but I won't spoiler). FV
  11. If he is on Frontier, his implants could be illegal. FV
  12. Also two more things to say: 1) While the Macross Quarter is around 400 m long, a lot of this length come from a Macross Cannon and a flight deck. In Storm Attacker mode the height is probably less than 300 m due to a short torso. To give an example, we are probably the size of a Gunbuster. 2) In the first chapter of the manga, when VF-171s' leader gave her squadron the order to attack with missiles, in kanji there was something I don't remember, but in katakana (the katakana for those who can't read kanji) there was written Planet Dance. FV
  13. Well, even the Destroid Work (Workroid?) looked like the Cheyenne. It was to be expected Finally, one that notices the Aquarion reference In 2chan (or was 2ch?) they understood it immediately. By the way, in Aquarion there was a "PSG Quantum Reaction Cannon" Well, just looking at the design, you could notice it is purple (color of enemies in Macross), has feet split in three parts (for Kawamori this is sign of evil alignment) and Brera looks like a "former friend" Kawamori type of character (Guld, Folken, Toma). One thing to notice is how big the mouth of the barrel of VF-27's gunpod is. It must be either a railgun or a beamgun. Also appears to be able to fold on its own, unless is using Macross Quarter's fold bubble (as described in ep. 06. Fold bubble is the reason why when the SDF-1 first folded South Ataria City was folded too. This is why Valkyries on the flight deck won't have any troubles). The cockpit could be either holograms or BDS/BDI type of control, maybe with the help of implants; also the hairpin could be a part of the control system, maybe allowing to control the VF-27 from afar. It is surprising how a new Valkyrie can still look this technologically advanced, even after all we've seen. FV
  14. I'll say that one of Kawamori's strong point is civilian life. In most of other mecha anime the main character thinks and talks only about war, fight or his robot, to the point that civilian life scenes looks almost out of place with him. The rest of the cast also does the same to various extents, to the point that characters who don't have a mecha are either commanders, scientists who built robots or at worst cannon fodder. Kawamori always manage to place some importance on characters who don't fight. I wouldn't say these are specifical Kawamori's staples, though. You could say Kawamori is optimist although not excessively PC. Rather, Kawamori is good for how he uses themes. Aside from love stories and battles, which are his two ever-present themes, there is also an equally important third theme (songs, fate, ecology, gattai) which is intertwined to the other two in a way that is both cheesy and well-written. He really changed after his trip in India. SDF Macross was only reminiscent of atomic bombs. DYRL was more about otaku enclosure than ecologism. Besides, the best episodes of Aquarion were directed by Kawamori. Kawamori emphasizes movements of limbs, technique and skill in a fight more than anyone else. Even Aquarion had impressive swordfights. Another thing is that his mecha are much more limited (although not powerless) than in other anime, especially ones belonging to main characters. Sci-fi in Kawamori is very centered around man, more than being sci-fi for sci-fi's sake. I agree. FV
  15. What I've heard (don't know where) is that this could be the series Kawamori always wanted to make. And on ex-org I read he once wanted to make some kind of cross between Macross and Spring&Chaos, although it didn't look like it was supposed to be a Macross series. I've never heard anywhere except here this series will tie all Macross together (Turn A Macross?). FV
  16. Your Japanese is lousy, they were screaming "BECOME LIGHT!" FV
  17. Let's not forget about SMS, which is a communications protocol allowing the interchange of short text messages between mobile telephone devices FV
  18. VF-27 Red Moon. Another one inspired by Minmay's songs (the VF-25 would be the Silver Moon). FV
  19. ANN says Junya Ishigaki (Macross Zero) and Takeshi Takakura (Aquarion). FV
  20. It does happen, but I don't think they will do it for Macross Frontier. AFAIK Gurren Lagann and Nadesico are two examples that comes to my mind. FV
  21. Yeah right, when Klan bestowes you the urge to speak about her, you TAKE it and you LIKE it! She has a character. When she commanded her wingmen she was helpful without being overprotective. When she attacked the Vajra she was competent. When she strolled alone in the mall she showed confidence very unlike puny flockers. When she already knew what makes people tick she showed she got her things right. This is a by-the-book kick-ass silent type for my part FV
  22. Imagine you have never watched any other Macross series. Imagine they don't even exist. Because she is a main character, so she is obviously gonna be important. Even the opening shows that. The second and third episode also reinforce the idea due to a mysterious connection with Vajras. Logical fallacy: petitio principii (vicious circle). I told you to try to follow an internal perspective. Just do it, then you'll see. If you follow an external perspective, it is obvious that all will seem like it came from an external perspective. Well, with such persuasive begging the question, undoubtly yes. However, what most people here is thinking looks like "Why, thank you!", so the real question should look something like "would you like a slice of Macross with Frontier icing?". How can you play with viewer's expectations without giving beforehand a well-known and expectable frame to deviate from? You could do a different episode, but then you wouldn't have played with viewer's expectations, because you wouldn't have created any. FV
  23. You can't vote if you don't know the characters, so this poll is for episodes 1-5, the next one will be after episode 10. Btw, I voted for Klan. When she is giant she seems like the silent type, I like it. FV
