The Apaches got shot up because they were taken by surprised. Air superiority alone cannot prevent insurgents hidding inside foxholes from taking potshots at unsuspecting apaches. Perhaps they should have use the helos to support the advancement of the ground forces instead of going out in front to destroy the republican guard. The helos should stay within the frontlines of battle. But i agree UAVs are suitable for the task because they are expendable and cheaper.

One of the doctrine used during the Cold War suggested that A-10 Warthogs be used to engage and destroy the air defence systems then let the choppers attack the armured vehicles. All this i assume with some level of air superiority and AWACS support

It takes a lot of skills and luck to shot down a fast flying fighter with unguided rockets. Firebirds make it look just too easy, rockets just don't have much range and will fall as they run out of energy. I think helicopters can be too vulnerable to operate in a high threat enviroment so the Army can its Comanche and resort to the drones instead.

But the Invid can evolve through several stages and eventually transition from a alien like organism to a humanoid form. At least that's what i read in some RT rpg book.

I might be remembering wrongly but didn't Airwolf's belly mounted launcher tilt to either side like a turret ? But the way he uses them is as if they are unguided...only Hawk with his super pilot skills can make use of them.

Noyhauser is right on the west's(and practically the rest of the world) neglect on those poor african states because of a lack of interest there. The war particularly the air battle between Ethiopian and Erithian planes does actually get some limited coverage in certain publication like Air International and maybe Air Forces. You certainly won't hear anything from the likes of CNN or BBC.

Apaches normally carry 4 Stingers...i almost never seen any pic of the paches carrying Sidewinders operationally although the army do have the Sidearm at one stage. OTOH There are tons of pics of USMC Cobras carrying AIM-9L on their stub pylons. The fragile helicopters are extremely vulnerable and normally operate in areas where top cover from other fighters exist. Furthermore helicopters with door gunners cannot fire through the rotor blades so the fighter can use that to their advantage. One more thing...a high speed fighter can tip a low flying helicopter over and cause them to crash. The Royal Navy did this on a least one occasion during Operation Corporate. I say a fighter launching a salvo of high velocity rockets should make short work of any chopper. That is if the fighter can detect the chopper in the first place.

Airwolf with nukes that glow ? Maybe its the sunburst flare countermeasure. Yeah...it seem Hawk needs to manually aim the rockets sort of like dumb fire weapons from Wing Commander. The cockpit doors make a hissing sound when open yet you see the smaller windows on each door. Still loved the show anyway.

They could make a series based on the VFX-2 storyline. No more vf-11maxl custom please.

hmm...becoming a bit of a Q & A exercise here F-20 vs MIG-29SMT Fully upgraded Fulcrum wins, simply better agility, R-77, TVC. Of course with upgraded F-20 its a different story. F-4 2000 KURnass vs Kfir/mirage 2000 Depends which version of Kfir/Mirage 2000, but upclose both will owned the Phantom. BTW is storm shadow the missle used by the rafale in AC4?(pod with wings that fires and spreads cluster bomblets) Its the Scalp EG standoff weapon. Both are based on the Apache launch vehicle. But i suspect when Namco made AC4 they were using Matra Apache as the weapon potrayed.

sigh....if only the Luftwaffe had sign up for them. Superior to their MiG-29A 10 years later.

Which parts on the MIG-29M? ---------------------------------------- From what i gather the full MiG-29SMT upgrade package will have: -RD-43 engines, 3D thrust vectoring. -Air intakes likes those of the 29M with anti-FOD grills. -The tail sting with a single airbrake of the 29M -A new radar from the zhuk series with the MiG-29M nose. -

F-35C capabilities are still a bit vague at this stage but i guess in a knightfight it should be nothing too special. Full MiG-29SMT upgrade includes upgraded but not new radar, MIG-29M parts, more powerful engines and 2 extra weapon pylons. Cockpit displays also updated. Extra thrust balanced out by increased in weight. Could go either way.

This is much better hmmm....current version of the Gripen is JAS39C vs the F-20A. This one is hard. Gripen is one of the most integrated fighters around and Sweden has tons of experience in fighter datalink. For BVR combat both would carry a similar load of missiles. But Gripen got Slammers compared with the Sparrows Tigershark tested with. You be the judge In a knifefight the current Gripen is a bit underpowered but does have the benefit of Iris-T. Tigershark should be cheaper to purchase and operate. Frankly i love them both. Viggen is my pick amount the 2. It has STOL capability plus datalink plus Slammers. Its definitely better than an early model Mirage but still a bit short handed vs 2000-5 upgraded planes. The Viggen is a bit short legged compared with the 2000 though and always flies with a centerline drop-tank. With Mica, uprated engine and avionics the 2000 is a bit too much for the Viggen. European delta canard super match Eurofighter VS Rafale VS Gripen A2A and strike. & for kicks. Mirage 2000 vs Rafale.

I second that In someways (IMO anyway) the older kits have better looking markings than the kits potraying planes of the new series. Perhaps the only way to get them is from through someone like custom decal maker anasazi. i wonder whether Hasegawa will ever release Kitori's Mirage or Kim's Sea Harrier as they don't currently have a Mirage F1 or Shar in 1/48 scale.

The AMI had leased some ADVs but i think they have been returned and replaced by F-16A/Bs. The flying club Saudi AF is the only other operator of the ADV and even they have considered taking on the wild weasel role.

DI Tornado: Even the IDS GR4 has no auto-wing sweep. Not too bad as long you stay within the speed limits for each of the 3 positions. Try dropping a bomb along the flight path of a pursuing fighter or a slow flying helicopter.
