I like the designs of 00, but I heard the plot is a lot like Wing... And I hated Wing (but liked the designs too). I should watch both seasons of 00 before judging though, hehe. My favorite mecha anime from 2008 was Macross Frontier... period. Btw... Is there going to be any special event on February 7? That's the official date for the start of Space War I...

Indeed. I think the VF-0 was used as basis for the development for more athmospheric-only valkyries. Maybe these and other variable fighters were influenced by it (and the anti-U.N. SV-51 too!). I know they aren't canon, but I find lots of similarities in them with the valkyries from Zero...
