Tommy Yune explained this at MWCon. AnimEigo held the license to SDF Macross, but it expired. Normally, the procedure is for them to destroy all remaining stock. HG struck a deal with them that allowed HG to repackage and sell the set again, while still allowing AnimEigo to offer the DVD's for a limited time on their site. So, it's the exact same series, as a matter of fact, the exact same disks. Not a re-issue, or a second printing etc. Just the leftovers in a new box set.

OK, listened to the Episode 1 clips... Roy definitely sounds better when he's not shouting. The Bridge Bunnies are OK, and I too wish they would have given Global an accent. However, the one thing that just sticks in my craw is Misa saying that Roy has to fly escort for the "muhcross" later on. Umm, what's a muhcross? Did they not bother to listen to the AnimEigo set for the ten seconds it would have taken them to figure out the correct pronunciation of the word? Minmay sounds great, and why wouldnt she considering it's Mari and all. Hikaru isn't too bad, a little higher pitch than I would prefer, but he is supposed to be 16 after all. Roy on the other hand...sounds too much like Randy Macho Man Savage to me. I wish they would have used a better voice for Claudia. They could have at least tried to find someone who sounded black. I don't want Wanda Sykes or anything, but I prefer the RT Claudia with the deeper voice to the plain vanilla chick they have there. Oddly enough, Virgin Road is one of my favorite episodes due to all the cool Max and Millia action. Yes, it's unbelievable that he would hand her ass to her yet again, and she would mistake these feelings of shame and rage for love, but hey, it's no more unbelievable than 40 foot giant robots. Mainly, the animation just KILLS me. Such a pivotal episode farmed out to what must have been a bunch of 10 year olds at AnimeFiend on "Bring your kid to work" day. Sad.

If you want a good, cheap copy of DYRL, FX is the way to go.

I just finished re-watching SDF Macross for the umpteenth time, and aside from the cheesy recap episodes that all series have, one episode stands out as the most painful for me to watch... Private Time Why? - I just can't stand to watch Hikaru's STAGGERING stupidity rear it's head once again. In the preceding episode, he realizes in no uncertain terms that Misa is in love with him, and runs off to spend time with her. So, here you think that Hikaru is actually starting to make a concerted effort to at least be Misa's friend. But then, the dizbang Minmay calls, and he fubars his relationship with Misa yet again.
