This got me thinking... why all the sudden hate against young student pilots? is it because they hate the idea in itself? or is it because the idea has simply become overused at this point? backtrack to 1984. Or whatever year you watched SDFM. hikaru was young. he may have been a student before the war, we don't know for sure. max was young as well. but i didn't hear any complaints then about putting them in the cockpit of a top-of-the-line valkyrie. whether or not hikaru and max (arguably the best 2 pilots of their time) were in school or not, they were definitely too young for warfare, regardless of the circumstances. during the couse of anime in the 90s and 2000s, we've had evangelion, gundam wing, and other countless series where we've seen kids even younger pilot their respective mechas. and yes, some of them were students, still in uniform, forced to be the savior of mankind. In Evangelion, it was a plot device (only 14yos can pilot evas). In most animes after, it was a marketing tool to capture the evangelion crowd. Then fast forward to 2008 where we see Alto, Michael and Luca fighting to save the human race against the Vajra. i think the reaction is against them is more of fatigue against the recent trend of youth saving the earth's ass, rather than us being actually adverse to the idea of the young 'uns saving the day. if that's the case, is it Macross' fault that some people may have gotten tired of this "cliche"? i don't think so. they did it in SDFM, and they merely did it again in MF. I wouldn't blame the Macross franchise for all that happened in the anime industry between SDFM and MF.

and to think she was originally intended to be a side character! this is the perfect example of a character writing itself. and boy did she write herself wonderfully!

Character Art Appreciaton Thread II
dreamweaver13 replied to d3v's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I LOVE these Sheryl pics! thanks! I specially like the second one (b/w sheryl close up). btw, what were alto and sheryl saying in the first pic? any translators out there? -
Same here. i'm still hesitant to watch it again coz i know it's gonna hit hard again. it's not so much the poverty that got to me (like Mike said, i see it everyday), but the effect of warfare on two kids, in particular, whose characters were so lovingly developed that by the time the end came, you can't help but feel for them. But this is OT. back to Macross. Hmmm... i never got the sense that MWers were declaring it the BEST.ANIME.EVER (although i did give it a 10, i give you that). but instead of explaining its faults, i'll just say this: it's not the best, and it's nowhere near perfect, but I LOVE it nevertheless.

Has Humanity truly surpassed Protoculture?
dreamweaver13 replied to dreamweaver13's topic in Movies and TV Series
Ok, this time guard that idea a bit more carefully. Unless you want Gainax stealing your ideas again. (and of course, with all those macross marathons, you still haven't seen Gurren Lagann yet, have you?) -
Or to be more precise: "Macross Frontier: Love Triangle Will (not) be Resolved."

Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
dreamweaver13 replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah a totally different experience! and i can't imagine myself enjoying it as much anymore on DVD. sadly, it might have spoiled me too much for the next 3 movies. if the festival organizers don't screen the next 3 movies as well, i'll be left with the DVD experience, which by now wouldn't do it for me anymore. ignorance was bliss. haha. -
good. comments already. i would agree that Voices is the better song. but DAMN, aimo does have a way of sticking to the brainpan. it's been my LSS for almost 2 months now, and i find myself humming it absent-mindedly every now and then since the series started. of course, it may be just because i've been watching MF for so long, my mind can't help but retain the song. If Aimo is not a better song, it certainly comes a close CLOSE second, IMO.

What we know about the Supervision Army

hey, don't say that. VFTF1 has already declared that he has never seen Robotech, and i find no reason to disbelieve him. right? right? -
Has Humanity truly surpassed Protoculture?
dreamweaver13 replied to dreamweaver13's topic in Movies and TV Series
just realized an addition to this: while the PC developed something as terrifying and powerful as the EVIL series, humanity has now developed a powerful mass destruction device, the MDE or the Little Girl. i'm not saying that one is better than the other, i'm just saying that both these races can come up with mighty scary stuff for warfare purposes. -
hey, anyone who says Sheryl is the hero gets my vote. on the serious side... wow, this is the first time i realized what you pointed out. so sheryl purposely ordered Alto to rescue Ranka, because she overheard him saying that he would kill her? wow. truly, sheryl was right in saying "you won't find another girl like me".
-
Ok, since this is the music thread, do you guys think Aimo is better than Voices?
-
And sadly, even her friends know it. What was that ONE song you always used to sing? voices?

And don't forget the rest of the quote from the Guide: However, the very worst song in the universe was performed by one Reba West. Thankfully she was destroyed when Robotech was. -

Poll: What was the best Mac F Episode - Episodes 11-25?
dreamweaver13 replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
Ok having finally rewatched the series in its entirety (and bracing myself for still another marathon), i can now declare that Episode 25 is my favorite Mac F episode. Just gave me goosebumps. and i don't think i'll ever get tired of watching it again and again. -
Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
dreamweaver13 replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I can't believe it. I actually saw Evangelion 1.0 on a movie screen. it was screened in the Philippines as part of a movie festival. Evangelion in all it's wide-screen glory, just the way it was intended. FRACKIN BLEW ME AWAY!!! some parts literally gave me goosebumps. it was just so awesome. I feel so blessed!! I can never ewatch it from the DVD the same way again. -
Dude, you drew that? wow. i still like the actual ending better, but yours is a close close second.
-
You missed my point. it's not a matter of "who" Schneizel was ordered to obey. it's the fact that he's STILL in thrall to the geass. lelouche would never risk keeping schneizel alive if there was any chance that his geass over him would be broken by his own "death".

!! truly that is mathematical genius at work! gives new meaning to the title of the movie "A Beautiful MInd"

I'll have to agree with gubaba's point of view on this one. most of the examples given are basically about helping either sheryl or ranka reach their full potential. But if that's all we're looking for, then we could as easily just say that the director of Birdman also played a crucial part. so did the original actress for Mao for getting hurt. so did bobby for giving ranka that peptalk on the beach. so did elmo for having the balls to face up to ozma (hey that's heroic enough all on its own). I'm not belittling Alto's contributions in this regard, but it's also very easy to get lost in questions of cause and effect until we lose track of the question: whether or not Alto can be considered a real war hero in the vein of Hikaru. after all, Hikaru also saved Minmay countless times (and slapped her silly in DYRL), inspired misa to persevere in light of their capture (and when she was all depressed in DYRL) and in that way also had an effect on SDFM. but i'm thinking of something more substantial and direct; some particular action that did not simply influence, inspire or aid in the actions of others, but something that our hero actually did that, on its own, REALLY made a difference in the war. hence, the "Hikaru's swing vote" example i gave earlier. In this regard, i think the closest thing would be Alto discovering that Battle Galaxy was merely disguising itself, and relaying this information to Battle Frontier and the Quarter. of course, "killing" grace would also be somewhere there. maybe the rescue of Luca and the first recording of the VF27 would also be considered. i'm also thinking about Alto being placed in Bilrer and Leon's circle near the end, but if i recall correctly, he didn't really give a solid contribution or course of action in that discussion. but IMHO, none of this comes close to Hikaru's noteworthy contributions to SW1, whether its giving the decisive vote on the asylum issue, or coming up wioth the Minmay Attack.
-
Aside from coming up with the Minmay Attack, being captured by the Zentraedi and suggesting that Max and Milla make their wedding public (all of which changed the course of SW1), one single incident in Hikaru's life really stands out as the point where everything could have changed. When Wareralolicon were asking asylum inside the Macross, Hikaru was the swing vote. imagine if he had voted the other way, humanity might not have survived at all. So you can say, equal to Minmay, Hikaru's actions really had an impact on the grand scheme of things in the Macross Universe.. What about Alto? was there any particular action of his that could steered the war against the Vajra to its end? in the grand scheme of things, what part did Alto play? and if there's any, was it anywhere near as substantial as Hikaru's contributions? Your thoughts...
