What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
dreamweaver13 replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Just finished watching School Rumble (1st season) and Fate/Stay night, and i liked them both. should i be ashamed of myself now? -
Interesting... and do they eventually discover that the source of the strangely familiar beam was a crashlanded and re-designed Megaroad 1?

Augh. this sucks. i just don't see it. Emily Blunt would have been perfect. damn you casting god!!! -
Most people here have been saying that the comics is different from the movie, but not in plot, storyline or characters. it's really hard to explain. so just buy it, or borrow it from someone, or even download the thing, and judge for yourself. and to answer your question, no, the comics did not show any reconstruction by Veidt, if i recall correctly (correct me if i'm wrong, guys). and if the message you got from the movie's end is that Veidt did it all to conquer the world and the construction business, than that's one more sign that something got lost in the translation when it was made into a movie. as for me, even if i saw that reconstruction part, i didn't interpret it as Veidt having financial motives. but that's just me; i might be biased because i read the comic.

Thirded!! -
still haven't forgiven me for that one, eh?
-
But face it, you're gonna see the movie eventually. whether tomorrow or a few years from now, on video or on a random night with nothing else to watch on HBO. and even then, you'll end up comparing it to the comics anyway, so why delay the inevitable? get it done with. It's not like you can go on with your life, actively avoiding anything to do with watching the Watchmen movie, stepping out of the room when your friends or family want to watch it, unless.... unless youre... OMG, Alan Moore, is that you????

Battlestar Galactica Discussion III
dreamweaver13 replied to kaiotheforsaken's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Yup. the moment i saw it, i already had an idea how it's gonna go down. and pairing that image with the final toast that adama and tigh made to Galactica, i'm thinking that's the way it's gonna go. hey, they did say they were gonna send Galactica off in style, didn't they. That being said.... a toast to Galactica! damn, it's the beginning of the end. it's like the series was already saying goodbye to us. i think it's because, deep down, she already wanted to tell everyone. she's been just so burdened with the knowledge, and now it's finally off her chest. hell, maybe she even went to gauis knowing full well that he wouldn't be able to resist using it as proof of angels. so it's a slap because she just had to at least show gaius that he was an a$$ for outing her in public. But that's just my thoughts. could also mean that she was sooooo mad, she forgot how to punch him.hehe. -
the answer is... because it's what's in the comics. so it was written, so it shall be done. IMHO, if the ultimate solution in the Watchmen comics was that Veidt just disarmed the nukes, or killed Nixon, or called for world peace (kumbaya lord, kumbaya...), then I doubt that Watchmen would have been hailed as one of the greatest comics of all time. I mean, yes, there's a nuclear threat to destroy the entire earth, and what does the hero do to avert it? take all the nukes away! whoop-de-doo! it's like superman IV all over again. What i'm saying is that, sure Moore could have chosen a more direct way for Veidt to solve the nuclear crisis, but what point would that have made? The title and the tagline says it all. Who Watches the Watchmen? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? and Socrates's or Platos's (i can't remember) answer to that was to make the watchmen believe that they are better than those they serve and it's their duty to guard and protect those lesser beings. The premise is that the "watchman" is doing everything for the good of those he serves. but since the only judge of whether his action is moral or immoral, then we have a problem. and what's beautiful about the Watchmen comics is how Moore was able to translate that greatest condundrum into a wonderful story. But if the only solution at the end was as simple as you want it to be, then the premise of "Who Watches the Watchmen" gets lost in the translation. In the comics (and in the movie as well), i thought it was clear that Veidt's intentions were pure. Granted his method was extreme, but to his mind, as the smartest man on earth, it was the only way to ensure the end of the cycle of violence. Too bad it failed because of Rorscarch's journal.

Ok, I get where you're coming from. But I still disagree. I still think they're sacrificing real character development for the sake of an "intriguing" storyline. I'm still hoping they could develop both. and now to approach it from a third different direction: I'm not satisfied with the progression of the show, but i will still watch it. It would seem that you're satisfied with it, but you're also waiting for the Pushing Daisies writer to liven it up a bit. In other words, we'll both still be watching it. two sides of the same coin, i guess. But then again, if we're the only two people left watching it , then that doesn't give me much hope that the show will last as much as I hope it would.

You misunderstood. My fault for even mentioning the Avengers and super-hero team-ups in this post, which was actually just a follow-up to an earlier post i made. I'm not condeming the lack of slam-bang super-hero action in Heroes (but i wouldn't mind it either). What's bothering me is that 4 volumes in, our heroes are still little lost lambs without direction and a sense of purpose in their lives. It's like they didn't go through anything in the first 3 volumes which would strengthen their resolve and/or solidify their identity. They're either (1) still unsure of their purpose in the world, (2) afraid to use their powers, (3) haven't developed their powers to its full potential. Case in point, after 3 volumes and all that Hiro went through, he had to take a trip to India and bother a wedding -- of all things -- just to realize how it is truly to be a hero?? i mean, WTF, shouldn't that have been out and done with as early as Volume 1? In short, i think our heroes are regressing instead of progressing.

How do i begin... The movie was ok. enjoyable, if only for the fact that i'm actually seeing the Watchmen on the big screen. i particularly liked the history-intro. i think it could have been better as a 2 hour movie, and they could have removed some parts without really ruining the movie that much. However, if the DVD is indeed the director's cut worth more than 3 hours, i'm definitely seeing it, if only to see how much more of the comics gets fit into the movie, and to see the Tales of the Black Freighter short animated movie. But... i am evaluating it as a movie. as far as movies go, it's still better than a lot out there. Yes, it's generally loyal to the comics, but some of the nuances, mood and substance of the comics got lost in the translation. So i won't even attempt to evaluate the movie vis-a-vis the graphic novel. it's just too diffferent. Moore was absolutely right -- Watchmen is unfilmable. But Snyder did the best job possible, i think. In short, I will remember with fondness, and with a sense of history, the first time I ever read the Watchmen comics. The movie... is just another good movie. But I will not condemn the movie for failing to translate what made Watchmen so special because, frankly speaking, I never expected it to. Ah, but there lies the rub. What made Watchmen so special was the way it made me think and feel, and the unique point of view it presented. If i don't go into a movie expecting that much, then why bother? Oh well... movies can't be masterpieces all the time, can it?

Where to next? Inner Space. Due to an unfortunate incident with a super-charged micronization chamber, Alto and Ranka in a VF25 are shrunk to microscopic size and placed inside Sheryl Nome's body. Triangle is finally resolved. and the resolution WILL SHOCK YOU! And they even find Megaroad 1 before they return to normal size. ..... ..... Damn, i sure hope i'm not serious.
-
exactly. they admit a mistake, and then they keep on doing it anyway. it's frickin volume 4 already, where's the superhero action?!! i'd understand if this series was made circa 1990's, where superhero movies do not have mainstream acceptance yet. but COME ON, it's 2009, the age where an Avengers movie is about to get made!
-
yup, that's the one. either dead, or a free-floating self-conscious SMS signal. But i still want it to be Micah. his power's way too cool to be written off.
-
Yup, also what i've been thinking since those text messages started coming in. the other one who could have fit the bill was that soldier girl who could intercept signals (what's her name again?). but she was killed off-screen (or in-comics, to be more precise). but then again, if she's still alive as an eternal signal traversing the SMS waves...

haha. wow, now that's an epiphany, good sir!

Terminator Salvation, colon, Really Long Movie Title
dreamweaver13 replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
agreed on the tv series. it followed its own path from T2. even trying to synchronize SCC with T3 is an exercise in futility. here's where i got the idea that they're gonna retcon T3: - a write-up said that John Connor isn't the head of the resistance yet, but is actually more of a low-ranked officer at the start. this wouldn't tie in with the T3 end where he and his future wife was already coordinating the surviving military units from the bunker. - supposedly they're trying to get Linda Hamilton to do a voice-over to tie TSalvation in with the end of T2. of course i don't know how true this is, or if this is already debunked. on a personal note, while i didn't hate T3 that much, trying to fit its events in between T2 and this upcoming TSalvation could be quite a task, and opens the possibility to a LOT of plot holes. i guess we'll never know until T Salvation finally comes out, but my personal preference would be to use T2 as the jumping point. -

From the write-ups i've been reading so far, it seems like they're gonna retcon T3 out of existence. did i get the right impression? -

I'm still wondering why you included your nightmare inside the "spoiler" item. i agree with you, though. i'd rather Marcus was a sleeper agent made by skynet, much like Boomer and other sleeper cylons. otherwise, it would give the impression that another group (other than skynet) built a machine that is more advanced than your typical terminator. besides, what's more dramatically compelling than a comrade that could turn on you any time against his own will? oh well, but that's all speculation. i guess we'll just have to wait and see. -
