The premise might be a bit off.... The examples the OP mentioned of "hero" robots are all actually "piloted" mecha, and should not be confused with AI-driven robots. Valkyries, gundams, and other piloted mecha cannot be good or evil per se, since they are only driven by the humans that pilot them. The mecha are, more or less, neutral until placed in the hands of the pilot. On the other hand, the examples of "evil" robots in the OP are all automated, AI robots. they are generally not directly controlled by a human, and act on their own volition under a set of directives given by their creator/programmer. That being said, japan also has its share of "evil" AI robots (i.e. sharon apple/ghost), and america has its share of "good" AI robots (i.e. data from STNG). I can't say one culture has a preference for the morality of its robots over the other, but i can at least say this.... Japan designs its robots way cooler.

What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
dreamweaver13 replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Black lagoon s1 was awesome for me. Loving Revy.. and that was even before i knew that she's also voiced by our very own klan klan. Just finished watching the 1st episode of the 2nd barrage... looks to be even bloodier than s1 so far. Finally finished watching Soul Eater. the series kinda dragged on, but i still found it enjoyable. Finished watching Linebarrels. Got better near the end, although it wasn't really anything spectacular. But worth watching. Watched the first episode of the Detroit Metal City anime.... funny! that manager of theirs is quite a character. hehe. Into episode 10 of School Rumble S2.... now that i already know the characters, i just find the series absolutely funny. guilty pleasures, yey. -
I'll lose interest when i'm dead... then add another year or two, to be sure.

Battlestar Galactica Discussion III

but at heart, isn't that what the ending of BSG was? sure, the fleet let go of their space-age technology, but they still presumably gave the local humans language, civilization, culture. maybe even fire. construction. tool-building skills. and most importantly, Baltar's unwavering desire to procreate. who knows how far that fictional (and fake) earth humans would have progressed if not for the intervention of the BSG fleet? -
people here couldn't even give a single answer for the mecha they would like to pilot, and you want them to single out the best anime ever? good luck!

Oh come on now! what would even make you think that D'anna would even contemplate killing herself? what part of the series would make you even think that she's capable of doing such a thing? Why would D'anna.... oh... wait..... um... nevermind. -
I remember a brief discussion on Alto's contributions to the human-vajra war, on whether or not they were significant enough. found it: Alto Saotome - War hero? Of course, this was limited to the significance of his actions on the general plot of MF. Therefore, if you're not digging Alto because of character development, that would be a different matter altogether.

Looking at the size of those basestars made me wonder... ok so we have around 30,000 human survivors in the fleet that chose to live on prehistoric earth. but what about the humanoid cylons on the rebel basestar? just how many were there that stayed on earth? and speaking of the rebel basestar, couldn't the rebels have at least jumped to the original earth to pick up D'anna before giving the centurions their freedom? hehe. poor girl. -
haha. relax, i like KOR, and I didn't mean it as an insult. sorry if it came out that way. it's just not something I imagine in a macross series.

cool. i don't get it though. what did the height chart have to do with the story? or did it completely come out of nowhere? -
I understand the desire for a definitive "resolution" to the love triangle, but really, how can you extend that into another 5 to 10 episodes worth of story? I think Killerrobot's point is that because the triangle was given too much exposure in the series itself (as you said as well), what more can you do, without having it feel like it was dragged on? and since sheryl and ranka have become too close friends (definitely more close than Misa and Minmay ever were), any attempt to lengthen the love story between these three might end up either being too comedic or too melodramatic. think Kimagure Orange Road. but that's just me. i've learned to accept the ending of MF. but maybe it's just because as a sheryl fan, i'm pretty much of the belief that alto had already chosen sheryl (by episode 24), and ranka just doesn't know enough to give up. hehe.

I agree completely that the aftermath episodes made SDFM much much better, but i can't see how extending MF to show an aftermath could make the series better. To my mind, the "big picture" theme of MF extended to understanding that the Vajra, no matter how alien-looking, could be intelligent creatures capable of communication. with ranka's explanation in episode 25, i think that settled the issue. SDFM, however, was much more. Love triangle aside, there was the issue of how the war-like culture of the zentraedi could be integrated into human civilization. How two species could co-exist. in fact, how two species could inter-breed and reproduce, for that matter, and further discussion on their common ancestors, the protoculture. There is also the issue of the formation of a new government after the near annhilation of bodolza's attack, the re-development of earth's eco-system, and how the government would deal with remaining zentraedi malcontents. in my opinion, these are directly related with the SDF-1's victory in SW1, and rightfully formed the basis of a continuation of the series. in other words, to me, the jump from A to B was seemless, and B was relevant to A. On the other hand, what more could MF dwell on? Co-existence isn't really an issue, since the vajra are too different anyway. you won't see a household with one human and one vajra.. most likely, even if the vajra stay on the planet, any interaction between the humans and the vajra wouldn't make for much comedy or drama stories. surely, there is no human-vajra breeding issues to speak of. new government does't have to be formed, coz there's already one in place. and humans won't have to deal with vajra malcontents, because as long as the queen as humans are on good terms with the queen, then everyone is happy. Sure, there are stories there somewhere (i.e. development of new fold technology, discovery of the link between vajra and protoculture, incarceration of leon, search for the Galaxy fleet), but in my mind, they're not necessarily linked with the theme and storyline of MF. They are good stories, but they could as easily be made as the subjects of a movie, or a new series. in other words, it doesn't have to be Alto, Sheryl, ranka and the gang who has to deal with these things. Hey, i'm not saying that there shouldn't be any more MF. hell, i'd be the first to line up for anything new to do with MF, be it a movie, OAV, manga, or a new series. all i'm saying is that MF would not necessarily be a better series if it were extended another 10 or so episodes.

Battlestar Galactica Discussion III

I'm just wondering about the significance of Hera to the big picture, and her role as the mitochondrial eve. i'm just thinking that if Baltar was right, and that the BSG fleet could easiuly breed with the local "earthlings", then the mitochondrial eve could have been any female on the fleet - it didn't have to be Hera. So what i'm thinking is that Baltar could have been wrong. maybe it was only Hera's unique DNA structure that could have breeded with the local humans. Hence, it would have explained why she was so significant to the survival of the human/cylon civilization, and why she was the one true mitochondrial eve. just thinking aloud. -

not exactly. there was no time warp involved. it was just a regular "jump". Everything that happened in BSG was happening 150,000 years ago from our Earth's perspective. think of it as a "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away" thing. the cylon colony didn't have resurrection technology because the one and only resurrection hub was blown to bits in previous episodes, and only the Final Five know how to rebuild the thing. And yes, you're correct about earth. "Earth" was their term for the homworld of the 13th/cylon tribe. but since they found our planet, they decided to call it "earth" in honor of their long journey. The real earth that was nuked had nothing to do with our planet or our solar system. -
I now realize why the sex scene had to be a bit long... i would suppose the flamethrower was supposed to coincide with an orgasm (whether by nite owl, spectre, or both at the same time, who knows?) otherwise, the joke is lost. So if you get the flamethrower after just 10 seconds of doin it.... hehe. in the comics, it would work with a few panels, but in the movie, a sex scene that short is a "what, you're already done??" moment.

Loved the ending. for me, it was perfect. just the right blend of resolved issues and unanswered questions. i am sad to finally say goodbye to BSG. it was a hell of a ride, and like Kara Thrace, one that I will never forget. -
My hands are definitely not raised. I loved MF. I noticed that some (or much) of the criticism is that MF failed to live up to the holy grail that is SDFM. But for me, that's beside the point. MF has not replaced SDFM's position in my heart. The fact is that I never expected it to. As a part of the Macross franchise, i enjoyed MF thoroughly. And i'm just glad that the franchise lives on. MF has its weaknesses, it has its downsides, but they weren't enough to ruin the whole series for me. And for me, as a person who has watched his fair share of anime over the years -- the good, the bad and the utterly horrendous -- i feel that the fan services employes in MF are very very tame. In fact, I hardly noticed them at all. It could be a case of me being desensitized over such things already, or it may be a case of me not making such a big deal out of those things. i think it's the latter...

Funny how it's Batman that could serve as the barometer for the demise of the superhero movie franchise. last i remember, it was also Batman (& Robin) that caused its death in the 90s.

I'd think it's still the ARMD, the same way that the Daedelus is still the Daedelus. otherwise we would have had Misa shouting "MAKUROS PUNCH"! -
