this is the second release in a series of three MACROSS entries in BANDAI's unfinished 1984/1988 H.C.M.(High Complete Model) series of pre-assembled toy-like models. in all, there were; * No.17; VF-1S Ichijo DYRL Ver. (minus FAST packs) * No.20; VF-1J Ichijo SDFM T.V.Ver. (which this article covers) * No.21; VF-1A "Cannon Fodder" Ver. for the first 15+ years of these toys' existence (1985/2002) they were pretty much unanimously considered among the MACROSS fanbase to be the "Cadillacs" of the existing VF-1 toys at the time. and indeed they were, as they were an ideal blend of the best aspects of the old 1983 IMAI "VARIABLE TYPE" line of Parts-Forming 1/72 model kits, and the rugged, "Perfect Transformation" TAKATOKU/BANDAI 1/55 "Chunky Monkey" toy lines. these rugged toy-like models possessed the detail of the IMAI kit, coupled with the transformation of the TAKATOKU/BANDAI 1/55, with the only "Parts-Forming" involved being the addition of the cockpit canopy blast shield to the BATTROID's chest, a limitation shared by the TAKATOKU/BANDAI 1/55. indeed, these were (and still are) AWESOME vintage VF-1 toys, adeptly combining the nostalgia of both the 1/72 IMAI model and the 1/55 Chunky Monkey into one cohesive, POWERFULLY nostalgic whole. in all honesty, the only real failing these toy/models have, beside a couple areas that might prove fragile if you handle the toy carelessly; *head lasers; BE SURE you shift them UP when shifting the legs/engine nacelles to and from BATTROID position, otherwise they'll catch on the swing bars and forcing the mechanism carelessly could possibly snap the lasers. * tail stabilizers; fold/unfold them gently, as i've seen the rotation lugs break before from overly rough transformation. they can easily withstand the latch/unlatching action of flipping them to FIGHTER position, just remember to perform the action GENTLY.... -is the fact that these toys had a rather limited production, and as such, have always been rather hard to come by. nevertheless, complete examples DO show up from time to time, and usually command around around $150/$250 NIMB/MIB. while these toys have handily been eclipsed by both the 2002 YAMATO 1/48 and it's successor 2008 1/60v.II VF-1 toy series, it nonetheless is a SUPERB and VERY NOSTALGIC vintage toy series, and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those who desire the best of then, as well as the best of today... - SPECIFICATIONS - Accessories: (ALL MODELS) *Two(2) pre-punched file cards for the accessory BANDAI HCM file card binder *instruction manual *Decal Sheets (Two(2) for No.20; VF-1J and No.21; VF-1A, Three(3) for No.17; VF-1S ) *BATTROID mode cockpit blast shield *GERWALK mode backpack radio antenna *wing mounted missile clusters (Twelve(12) missiles total, all removable from the Four(4) missle pylons) *non-collapsible GU-11 Gunpod *Chara Figure (unpainted); Hikaru Ichijo in flight suit (No.17; VF-1S) Lynn Minmay in DYRL pink and white stage dress (No.20; VF-1J) Misa Hayase in uniform (No.21; VF-1A) Features: *perfect transformation (ala TAKA.BANDAI 1/55) *metal landing gear with real rubber tires and dual NON-CANON Arrestor Cable Hooks in main gear bays *jointed hands (separately movable trigger fingers that grip GU-11 well, and movable ball-jointed wrists) (please also see "AnyMoon.com"'s review of this same toy; http://anymoon.com/blog/2006/07/21/bandai-172-hi-complete-model-valkyrie/ ) (MY PERSONAL FINISHED COPY OF No.20; VF-1J Ichijo SDFM T.V.Ver.)

Shaorin replied to VF-18S Hornet's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
(EDIT; One more time, from the top;) The Best of Then, and the Best of Now (1986 BANDAI 1/72 High Complete Model and 2008 YAMATO 1/60v.II VF-1J Ichijo T.V. ver.) and there it is; the best VF-1 Scale Replica of the 20th century, (arguably) alongside the best of the 21st. (also arguable ) i just added the HCM to my small VF-1 collection, due to it's strong resemblance to the IMAI/BANDAI 1/72 parts-forming model kits. of which, the VF-1S version was actually directly responsible for getting me into VF-1s and MACROSS in the first place, by way of the CEJI/REVELL ROBOTECH DEFENDERS "VEXAR" U.S. repackage of the VF-1S. in the late eighties, a cousin of mine, that i got to see on a regular basis, gave me the "VEXAR" that he had built up and painted (VERY badly) and despite the fact that i was a rather immature and destructive child at the time, that VF-1S model had managed to stick in my head despite the very short time it lasted in my hands. it wasn't until 1993/94ish that i got another chance with the VF-1, though, in the form of an ARII 1/100 GERWALK model of the VF-1J Ichijo T.V. from there, there was no turning back for me, i was a MACROSS fan. so, in summation, i consider the VF-1S/VEXAR of my foggy childhood memories my very first VF-1, however short a lifespan it had in my hands, and that ARII GERWALK model my first "proper" VF-1, and the one that finally and ultimately struck MACROSS fandom within me. this is, why, despite some initial aversion to paying as much for the ancient and imperfect HCM as most YAMATO VF-1v.IIs sell for, i went ahead and took the plunge; because i consider the HCM to be the perfect amalgamation of my first two experiences with the VF-1 into one cohesive, powerfully nostalgic toy-like model... -

From the album: 1/72 BANDAI HCM VF-1J FULLY FINISHED
here is the 1985 BANDAI HCM VF-1J that i bought from fellow MWer "VT-102" i have fully applied the included decals (two sheets, self-adhesive fine film, cut from sheet to fit) and fully painted the white plastic Lynn Minmay in her beautiful DYRL pink and white stage dress. i have also painted the red sighting sensor on the barrel of the GU-11, as it was supplied unpainted, with no appropriate decal included on either sheet for the purpose. i finished by applying the BANDAI identification and manufacture labels from the two sheets onto the inner styro tray and it's cardboard lid. finally, i shored up and strengthened the box with transparent tape, and hinged the styro tray lid to the tray, placing DYRL movie screenshots and a MACROSS character lineup on the bare inner side of the lid. all in all, even with it's faults, this is by far my favorite vintage VF-1 replica, and my second favorite VF-1 replica period, right behind the YAMATO 1/60v.II of this same VF-1 variant... -

got a question here; i heard on this site; http://www.toyark.com/news/macross-toy-news-51/vf-hi-metal-vf-1j-hikaru-custom-in-color-2488/ that "Tamashii" the person/team responsible for the design of the new 1/100 HI-METAL VF-1s, is the very same person/team responsible for the BANDAI High Complete Models of the mid-eighties. can anyone confirm or deny this?

exactly. i doubt a 1/48v.II will ever happen. not with the market saturated as it is. the only feasible way that i might see it is as a special limited edition, centering around the two, perhaps maybe the four most popular "guaranteed seller" VF-1 variants. at any rate, however, i feel it would be a rather risky move for YAMATO...
