About the Macross Chronicles
drifand replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Oh, yeah - ToysNToys wins over Kinokuniya for Macross Chronicle(s) :-) I actually went to the Liang Court branch of Kino to get original, un-cut-out editions of issue 1 and 2 because TnT was doing a mass-coupon thingy for the limited Yamato toys, so all the 1&2s at TnT were already 'mutilated' in the bag. Turns out MC is ONLY available in small quantities at the Liang Court Kino branch (about 12-14 pcs per issue), and NO binders. Price-wise, 12SGD at TnT vs 14+ at Kino is no contest. On a side note, I originally planned to collect TWO sets of MC, but seeing as how... massive the undertaking is going to be, I'll just keep the spare binder and get another 3~4 more. -
Well, I will own one of these (and just ONE, thank you)... but only when the P2 No. 3 flak-vested version is out, either as a variant or add-on pack. Gives me more time to save up, AND more time for 'issues' to be ironed out.

If you're still in SG, run down now to China Square Central, ground floor - 'ToysNToys' has every issue from 1 to 6 plus a stack of binders. -

Thanks for the update... gotta make space! Where's a dimension eater when you need one? ;-) -

So, I'm up to issue 5 and you know what? The binder already seems 2/3 full! Maybe it's the ring-protectors adding to the thickness, but still.. no way the binder can take 50 issues (at the current content level). Anyone else feel the same? -
Well, speaking as a fan of the toys first, and who hasn't watched ANY VOTOMS before, the Pailsen Files were at least... entertaining. I found the OP music super nostalgic but didn't really enjoy the CG treatment at all. But I fun the ride run and would seek out the older works when I have time.

Early arrivals of Max 1A Super sitting on the shelves here in Singapore. Quietly.

Thanks for all the pictures and feedback, guys. I share your pain and wish for a speedy solution from Yamato.

Here's some equal opportunity bitchin' for Bandai, specifically for their Macross marketing team (of perhaps 1 bozo who got rejected for the Gunpla division): When your 20+ year old toy has been surpassed by a competitor in size, design and features, nostalgia alone cannot ignite fan's desire to buy-in. Where is the inspired move to start with an UNEXPECTED first release? Like the 1D, for example? Instant gratitude and good press. You could probably make more profit from THAT and the DYRL deluxes than the tired (and seemingly endless) milking of the molds that will bore the collectors who already have almost/all the original TT and Bandai releases anyway. We'd still buy the SO, ES, if only for the parts, and even at blatantly exploitative prices. But try me with a 1A, 1ASuper, 1SMax... blah blah blah and you'd just be wasting petroleum. And paper.

It's safer to think of it as an (expensive) completed poseable model. The joints are detented (clickity), but can be easily pulled off from the slots in the various limbs. It CAN be frustrating trying to put them back under the cloth covers. We can all wish for a more durable/better-built solution from CM's, but I'll take this over WAVE's rubber/PVC covered joints. Also, while the prototype pics of the previous AV-0 release looked good, the actual product had a slightly iffy sculpt (some details were not crisp), and the paint applications were a bit sloppy, although the tampo-markings were perfectly fine. Overall, I'd have to say that CM's 1/35-ish VOTOMS figures seem to have better QC and finishing than the Mecha Action AV-0. Again, the less than perfect level of finishing is something I'm willing to live with just to have a toy of a mecha I really like. (see the picture links in my sig.)

Oh yes! Brocken will be mine Despite all the problems with the AV-0 (most significantly, the easily dislodged joints), they look great on the shelf and I believe the Brocken will be a beautiful addition, especially with the trademark cloth shrouds. I really wonder how long the WHAM labors can last before WAVE bows to pressure and comes up with a better solution than the restrictive PVC shrouds. Best if they act on the Helldiver before it's released. The WHAM Ingram is already DOA.

Right off the bat: EXTRA - music by Ken Ishii, animation by Koji Morimoto (1995) Watch it in high-res on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Zj9qnkRDAY&fmt=6

Well, the 'two small ones' that look 'cheap' are the CM's 1/18 scale, and they look that way because because of their toy-ishly bright anime colors under bright lights. They could look a look nicer if you have the time to grunge them up. See an old pic of mine: I do believe that for pure armor-mode playing, you'd be better off with the Megahouse version. The slightly larger 1/15 scale makes it a more forgiving toy compared to the fragile-feeling CM's. But... I still prefer the latter because of their all-around better proportions in both modes. And also because the CM's version of Ley/Ray's bike is the only version out there today with an accurately incorporated beam-gun forearm armor. :-) Still looking forward to CM's release of the Blowsuperior, even though the lack of chest missile really blows.

No matter how much I hate the iffy-ness of past Yamato products, it cannot compare to the dread I have for the Toynami/Aoshima Legioss. At one point, dealers in Singapore lowered the price for the Aoshima release to just 150SGD for all three... and there were still almost no takers. As a fan of the designs, I will always be tempted to buy-in, but I just steel myself and say 'No'. Same as how I deal with Yammy 1st-runs, regardless of how good the reports are. The potential disappointments just don't seem worthwhile to me.

I said "probably". Let's wait and see. Still betcha we won't get a proper TV Hikaru VF-1S Super Pack.
-
Nah, it's just MARKETING at work. Yamato pulled the same stunt back with the old 1/60s. You WANT TV-style fast packs for Hikaru's inherited VF-1S? Guess what? THAT Super Valk ain't coming out. Buy THIS one + a Hikki 1S and there you go. So, that means I can buy a separate GBP-1S armor set for the 1J? Maybe. But the bundled 1J + GBP-1S set will probably have some exclusive option parts to tempt you into double-dipping. Got it? :-)
-
Amen. There is more original mecha design in Orguss than in almost any other robot-anime.

Some things about the Wave Ingram just don't feel right... the molded rubber shrouds look too wrinkled; the shoulders look undersized; the head isn't 'handsome' at any angle... in fact, I haven't seen a single pic where the head isn't always pointed at the ground. Why so sad, Wave? The Yamato has a much nicer sculpt, especially for the head. I can overlook the slightly squashed proportions because of the size... the sheer presence makes up for it. That, plus the fan-pleasing use of cloth shrouds, pioneered by the CM's edition.

Simple customization for my 'Transforming WALL-E'... Used some sand paper to scuff the distinctive semi-circular rust spot on WALL-E's front plate, then painted it in with Gundam Markers etc. WALL-E's head can peep up in 'box' mode. Also painted his neck yellow to match screen-caps. Although the arms cannot extend, the claws and head are quite expressive. Another trade-off are the non-triangular treads but I hardly notice it. And the retracting mechanism allows for other neat poses. All in all, a really nice toy! Next up: Gonna dig up my masking tape and paint in the missing 'sliding rails' for his arms. A 'perfect' WALL-E would have those gray sections spring out to become flush with the sides of his body, but from the looks of it, THAT is 'anime magic' on the part of PIXAR. :-)

Gorgeous work. Not too far a stretch of the imagination for Yamato to issue a proper repaint, I hope.
-
Hopefully it's just a case of careless play and not poor CAD or some kind of unforeseen metal/ABS reaction B.S.
-
Well, as a fan of the CM's approach for the 1/18 ride armors, I gotta say I am a bit disappointed with how Yellow's ride is turning out. No chest missiles is a bummer. But what the heck, I'll buy it anyway because the proportions are just right. As for the Wonfes exclusives, the chromed/clear combos are... strange. Just as well that they are limited, CM's would lose money if these were made in large quantities! The 'standard' type however, is a different matter. That one looks like a great opportunity for customising, since the rider's name is absent. I'd love to have one with my name on it. :-)
-
Oh thank goodness. I'll definitely buy-in with the DVDs if at least 2nd Barrage is also available. Now I just hope the VAs don't get changed around. Fare thee well, Geneon. Long live Funimation!
