Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
F-ZeroOne replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
For all the bashing I do of the non-UC Gundams, I have actually watched and quite enjoyed all of SEED (although if anyone can explain to me just what the hell happened in the final five episodes of each series...!) and actually preferred Destiny to the original SEED series; it just felt like it had more of a history. I also own the entire series of Wing, plus Endless Waltz (though when I dug up my copy the other day, it had so much dust on it I think the Moonlight Butterfly must have got it...!). The way I've put it before is like this; SEED and its ilk are like highways; they take you where you want to go with the minimum of fuss but the views are a bit boring. Turn-A, on the other hand, is the road less travelled - harder and more difficult to navigate, but the views on the way are much more rewarding. The other thing about Turn-A is that its probably only seen in context by Gundam fans, who have seen the series which came before it (I saw V-Gundam after Turn-A and although I know Graham likes it - I can even sort of see why - I have trouble seeing that it was actually directed by the same person!) and properly realise just whats been achieved; having said that, it is one Gundam show I would strongly recommend even to people who aren't mecha fans, as its a pretty brilliant SF story in its own right.- 4041 replies

True, but when its revealed what the cockpit is - very nearly at the end of the show - its just a beautiful moment. lechuck, you forgot that the Turn-A is also the greatest clothes spin-dryer ever...! This is also another one of the strengths of Turn-A, and it really harks back to a lot of the early Tomino stuff, where people are always doing chores and things; one episode of Turn-A largely resolves around an attempt to round up some cows! Theres also, I think its episodes 18, set at the field hospital - again, portrays the horror of war in a wonderfully understated way, and much better than, picking an example entirely at random off the top of my head, calling one of the lead characters "Peacecraft"...- 4041 replies

I think its main trouble is that its always seen out of context with the show, especially in black and white line-art - fully coloured you can see thats its probably a closer tribute to the original RX-78 than quite a few other more recent Gundams...- 4041 replies

Southern Cross & Genesis Climber Mospeada
F-ZeroOne replied to msterling21's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You call that expensive - I used to have to pay thirty pounds - thats pounds! - per single volume of Bubblegum Crisis on VHS! And I had to cycle to Wales [1] on my Dads old unicycle to collect it! Then I had to find two pine cones to wind the tape around so that I could watch it... [1] Not actually part of England, despite what the translators of Negima might tell you... -
That one with the destroyed Valk should be called "Now I have a GU-11, HO HO HO!"...

F-ZeroOne replied to msterling21's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Haven't seen Southern Cross. I'd say Mospeada is worth it, its an interesting take on the alien invasion story and quite possibly the only such tale where humanity has had its butt kicked three times by the end of the first episode... -

Welcome... to the exclusive ranks of the Order of the Moustache! Collect your free stick-on 'tache from reception... As noted, Yoko Kanno did the music for Turn-A. As for the mecha designs, they grew on me a lot. Like everyone else, I hated the Turn-A when I first saw the designs, but its now my favourite Gundam design (I even have a cel of it on my wall, and I'm kicking myself that I didn't pick up some of the toys when I had the chance), and I think that a lot of the Turn-A stuff works much better when its moving (like the Flat) then when you see it in static art. I'm not so keen on the Turn-X, though. Now if only this blasted show would get licensed...- 4041 replies

Thanks for all the replies about the F-16 AMRAAMs - and to think, at one point it was proposed to put Sparrows on the F-18L wingtips...!
-
One for David - I recently saw a picture of a F-16 carrying AMRAAMs on the wing-tip rails - is this common practice for F-16s and other aircraft with wing-tip rails these days?

Ace Combat 6:Skies of Liberation for XBOX360!

Shamrocks stringing her along. After that scene, he hot-wheeled it back to the real love of any Ace Combat wingman - the AWACs. -

Theres a few clips on YouTube. The show was known as "TechnoVoyager" in Japan, its only thanks to a bit of an alphabet mix-up that "TB" appeared on the sides of the vehicles...!

If its the "Alan Davies" thing, this is a bit of a joke on my part. Stephen Fry hosts an unusual quiz show in the UK called "Q.I.". Its unusual because although points are awarded for correct answers, points are also taken away for "obvious" answers that are based on what might be called "man down the pub says" knowledge, rather than actual fact. Also unusually, answers can actually change between series, based on updated science; for example, in one series the question was asked "How many Moons does the Earth have?", and the answer had changed between the first time of asking and the next. [1] The audience have even won episodes on occasion. Although the contestants are generally changed between episodes, one constant is British actor/comedian Alan Davies, who generally plays the class dunce (with scores going down to minus -50 or more... ) to Stephen Frys intellectual firepower. [1] And if you answered "one" here - well done, you just lost ten points.

Ace Combat 6:Skies of Liberation for XBOX360!
F-ZeroOne replied to Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Finally finished the campaign last night. Is it just me, or is Shamrock the unluckiest wingman in Ace Combat history? And, oh, yet another example of unrequited love between an AWACs and a pilot in Ace Combat. Is this what its like in real life? "Viper Zero-Three-Tango-Niner, sending you strike co-ordinates now, you big stud." -
Strange tid-bit from the movie world - the forthcoming remake of that British wartime classic, The Dambusters, is to be scripted by Stephen "Brain The Size of Kent" Fry. This has raised one or two eyebrows, especially if the rumours that Alan Davies will be taking the role of Wing Commander Guy Gibson are true...

Terry Pratchett diagonsed with early Alzheimer's
F-ZeroOne replied to F-ZeroOne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
"The Colour of Magic" was the earliest book in the Discoworld series, which has gone on to be more and more refined ever since. Everyone has their favourite Pratchett book or sequence, but for me I'd suggest "Guards, Guards!", ""Men at Arms" and "Feet of Clay" as a good starting point. -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7141458.stm I don't know how popular his books are in the US or the rest of the World, but in the UK he was IIRC our biggest-selling author until J.K. Rowling came along. To quote perhaps his most well known character: THERE IS NO JUSTICE. (and no, thats not shouting, thats quoting. If you'd like to know where the difference is, might I suggest starting with Terry Pratchetts Mort?)
-
The Luftwaffe thought that, too, until about the end of the summer of 1940.
-
True. But we also gave them all the design errors, too.
-
Eric "Winkle" Brown, the great British test pilot, was an advocate of this arrangement and IIRC tests have shown that it increases "G"-tolerance. David r.e. Lightning - we had to protect the domestic industry somehow...
-
Just as bloody well too - you lot were going to call the P-38 the "Alabama" before we lent a hand...! (Mind you, the most famous British fighter of all time very narrowly escaped being called the Supermarine Shrew... ).

Ace Combat 6:Skies of Liberation for XBOX360!
F-ZeroOne replied to Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'm a little way into the game now; delayed partly because of the later UK release and partly because Mass Effect is competing for attention. My initial impression was that it felt a little flat. Ace Combat has never had great voice acting, but it did the job, and it worked most of the time (Ah, Chopper and Thunderhead, how we miss your little chats... ) but this one seems a touch worse than usual. I still like the Estobakian accents, though. I just have a thing about mock Russian accents... The first couple of missions also feel a touch, I don't know, lifeless. Maybes its because I played the heck out of the first mission in the demo. However, Ace Combat 6 mixes it up by adding the Allied units - and suddenly, things brighten up. Thats not just you up there fighting for Gracemeria - its you and GhostEye and Dragon Breaker and Barracuda! It adds interest to what you're doing, and boy, do you feel bad when Barracuda team gets wiped out because you were too busy strafing tents all the way over the other side of the battlefield... (er, sorry, guys. Better luck next life). It also becomes apparent that the game is more dynamic with lots of nice little touches; for once, it actually looks like all the people you're supporting are actually doing something, and with the Allied support feature, they do. And for perhaps the first time ever in an Ace Combat game, you have Wingmen who are actually useful. Not only that, but they can be shot down, too. Hopefully not by you. Theres other nice little touches - ESM, which aids you or the enemy if you're in its radius, being able to land at newly captured bases, and upgraded SAMs. They blow up just the same as the old ones. Theres some disappointments - the Assault records are a bit barren (strangely, your own forces can now feature here, and I'm wondering if you earn some sort of achievement if due to your tent-strafing oversights everyone else gets fragged... ), and Ace Combat games are always better with more featured aircraft, not less. The story is growing on me, after a somewhat cringe-inducing start; its interestingly presented, and theres some nice cut-scenes - although we all know that A-10 pilot wasn't really trying, because if he was, that Fiat 500 would have been atomised... But Ace Combat 6s biggest strength is this - its looks absolutely, jaw-droppingly, gorgeous. Move your HDTV up to the window and just play the opening trailer. See how many people you can make drool against the glass...
