What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
F-ZeroOne replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
ZZ improves quite a bit from about episode 22 onwards; up to that point its worth suffering through just to see why it was so important that Tomino be kept miserable at that stage of his career. One of the things I never got over there is poor Bright being reduced to the Universal Centurys greatest straight man... -

The original series is still worth a watch, if you can forgive the 70s-era animation, design and disco music. Whats interesting is that you can almost tell the point when Tomino steps up a gear - after reading so much about Gundam for so long, finally seeing the moment where Lalah appears for the first time - chills up the spine, that is.- 3998 replies

The YF-22 is not Macross, but during its development it was competing against the prototype Northrop YF-23 [1] and its often cited that this competition was one of the inspirations for the plot (and look) of Macross Plus. I really liked the Iron Man movie; I felt the ending was a bit of a let-down but everything else was very, very good. If you haven't seen it, do watch past the end of the credits! [1] Something of a fan favourite on Macross World, and also quite possibly the most Macross-y real world aircraft ever.

I quite liked the first MS Igloo; it was interesting to see an anime focussing on what we Brits used to call "operational research"; however I was a little disturbed by the "good guy Nazis!" feel on occasion and I think they also spoilt the ending a little bit - Tomino would never have let that happen...- 3998 replies

I wouldn't exactly call it "current", but Fang of the Sun Dougram. -
I found his later books rather weaker than the earlier ones; The Andromeda Strain I think is my favourite. And we do have him to thank for making dinosaurs freakin' awesome again.

Actually, I rather suspect that The Stig is a new model Dalek...

If we're going that route, theres only one member of the Top Gear cast I would like to see in the TARDIS. Some say that he bites the heads off life-size jelly babies... Some say that hes bigger on the inside... ...all we know is...

I think Russell T. Davies said recently that it has to be someone younger these days, as the production schedule and increased pace of episodes would kill an older person. I forgot to mention, that in the same TV awards where Tennant announced he was leaving, Doctor Who won best drama and best actor (go on, guess which one) but somewhat annoyingly, the best actor and actress categories were merged, which meant that Catherine Tate and David Tennant were effectively competing against each other - I felt that was a bit hard on Tate... Edit: its not too late to vote - there is a third option...! http://www.pvponline.com/comics/pvp20081104.gif

Haven't read it, but I need no convincing whatsoever about the deranged and scary part. Though I have to say, the one very brief minute I got to meet him once he was charm itself.

Really. He announced it at a recent TV Awards in the UK, though its been sort of rumoured for quite some time. Place your bets...

You're welcome. Tom Baler seems to be getting bigger every year - not fat, just big.

One of the names doing the rounds is Robert Carlyle; the only problem I'd have with that is that it would completely remove any sense of threat. Even the Daleks would poop themselves. ("EX-TERM-I-NATE THE DOC - wait, you mean its that guy our of Cracker and that Bond film?! Er... LOVE AND PEACE TO THE DALEKS! PLEASE DON'T HURT US...") I think the only thing we can be reasonably sure of is that - ahem - Whoever it is will probably not be a generally known name. Maybe someone who has starred in a high-budget production but not a "household" name. Edit: YouTubers might wish to search for clips of Tom Baker, who hosted the popular British satirical programme, "Have I Got News For You" last night. He introduced himself with the magnificent line "Hello, I used to be Jon Pertwee... "

I got into Turn-A sometime after that toy came out. I did see a couple in Tokyo recently, but they all had the scary unreadable kanji which translate as "Problem". I'm also kicking myself for not picking up the MSiA when I had the chance, but again, when I had the opportunity I was still under the impression that Turn-A was the result of Tomino hitting the tequila a bit too hard recently and not the masterpiece creation of the Universes greatest mecha show director. I have someone working on something in compensation for missing out on the figures, I'll see about putting up some images when Project... er... Fish... is completed.

Colour pics of the Turn-X figure: http://ga.sbcr.jp/mreport/011409/ And, Bandai? Turn-A. You are, aren't you? OR ELSE.

I'm just looking forward to Scotty charging around the Jefferies Tubes hunting Klingons with a cricket bat and yelling "Come get some!" whilst doing so...
-
Ah, that just wouldn't be cricket now would it, old boy? Given the way the economy is going, I imagine its going to be interesting times for HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales...

Hmm. I'm wondering if the arms are looking a touch worse than they actually are - if you look at the inset picture of the extended, gun-grabbing hand, it seems to be roughly level with where the unextended hand is in the main image. I'm wondering if the arms in the main image are swung forward a bit...?

How much CO2 do you think an exploding Storm Shadow would generate in the congestion charge office?

The story goes that Tomino was very depressed during the making of V-Gundam - worried about Sunrises merger/takeover with Bandai - and Turn-A was a kind of therapy for him; he even wrote a book about how it helped him get over things. He also intended it tie up all Gundam continuities; whether he succeeds or not is open to debate but it explains some of the "feel" of the show. I agree that its perhaps a few episodes too long, but when I watched it was after watching ZZ Gundam, V-Gundam and Gundam SEED so I think that made it make even more of an impression on me. Look, Tomino can do happy without slapstick! It might also help to remember the context of what happened when the first designs for the Turn-A emerged in the West, long before there were near-instant downloads of series 30 seconds after broadcast. We all thought he'd gone nuts! It was a wonderful surprise to discover, some years later, what a quality show it is. And I now like the Turn-A design a lot. It is genuinely different, whilst still recognisably being a Gundam. I think its episode 18 of Turn-A Gundam that manages to convey the seriousness and effects of the conflict quite well - the episode with the field hospital. Oh, talking of "treats"...- 3998 replies

With the original MSG, there seems a point when Tomino suddenly steps up a gear - and that gear is called Lalah. Its a pity the series rushes to an end past that point (ratings problems, IIRC). Once you've seen most of the UC Gundam stuff, and a couple of the alternate Gundams, then do try Turn-A Gundam. It will surprise and delight you.- 3998 replies

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2008/...-x-contest.html Intriguing idea: If Japan can't get F-22s, might opt for F-35, delays affect F-35, Japan buys Typhoons as interim measure, both UK and Japan operate JSF [1]and Typhoon. Would make for some interesting joint exercises, what? "I say, old chap, this green stuff is a touch warm, wouldn't you say?" <as flames burst from RAF exchange pilots ears>. "Wasabi, Flight Lieutenant Ginger-san. Now, please, explain laws of this game you call... cric-ket?" [1] In the RAFs case, all one of them, shared between the carriers on alternate Thursdays. Rest of the week spent trying to find a Tescos garage that does jet fuel.

Thats sort of funny in an odd way - you can't shoot the thing down a naval cannon, but the wings start making creaking noises and suddenly you can start massing tanks on the border again...

Hey, the French did overwing AAMs too - and look where you guys stuck 'winders on the F-8...!
