  1. Kill 'em All. Its not so much a nickname, as a way of life. Or death. (Incidentally, its not just that colony - Tomino killed half the human population of the solar system by the start of the first episode. Presumably, they couldn't find enough animators. )
  2. Just in case our Macross cousins across the pond are wondering - UK childrens TV in the 70s and 80s was probably made using quite a lot of the left-over drugs of the 60s.
  3. Thats not anime, you've got hold of an image of the real HMS Queen Elizabeth! I wish. I'm just waiting for David to see it and point out everything thats wrong with it...
  4. I haven't got any real problem with his age. Its just... well, you know how they say Policemen seem to be getting younger all the time?
  5. It seems a few people - and I'm one of them - are slightly spooked by the fact that the new Doctor is now younger than, well... us. I mean, he was eight when I was at the British equivalent of High School! He never saw the Empire Strikes Back at the cinema (the first time!) I bet he doesn't even know the words to "Jamie and the Magic Torch!" * OTOH, it could lead to some interesting possible future interactions... "Thats not how I taught you to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!" "Awww, Daadddd!" * "JAMIE! JAMIE! Jamie and the Magic Torch!". Okay, its not hard. But still...
  6. Beat me to it - been at work! Well, it does at least confirm my theory that whoever it was was going to be someone known to the industry and critics but not overly well known to the public... I'd never heard of him before this evening, and my first - almost certainly wrong impression - was "Blimey! They've given Morrissey a humour transplant and made him the Doctor!" "And if a Dalek should ex-term-i-nate the two of us, to die by your side... "
  7. The very latest hot tip: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiwetel_Ejiofor Does tie in with my theory that the new Doctor will be - like all the other new Doctors - someone who has been around, got lots of critical acclaim, but isn't overly well known to the public at large. Apparently, some Who forums are saying that this is pretty much certain but just needs to be announced...!
  8. New Doctor to be announced Saturday. Place yer bets, ladies, gentlemen and Daleks! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7807742.stm
  9. Oh, it weighs that much. The Paras are just that hard! Its a good read, but it is over quite quickly - the text takes up a lot of space on each page, so the size of the hardback is a bit deceiving...
  10. What with the usual seasonal distractions, I forgot to point out that the BBC has finally broadcast the TV version of "Doctor Who At The Proms" today...! Look for it on the inter-tubes; if you want to see just how much the show is loved, watch the children in the audience about to widdle themselves when certain "old friends" of the Doctor gatecrash the party...
  11. Just finished reading Apache, by Ed Macy. Its about British AH Mk1 Apache attack helicopters (thats the up-engined, waterproofed one) in Afghanistan. You might recall the story from a little while back about a rescue mission where some Royal Marine Commandos rode into an enemy fort by, basically, hanging onto a couple of Apaches. Its actually the first military memoir I've read that actually costs all the weapons fired. Every so often, you see on the news a Para firing a Javelin anti-tank missile. Thats forty thousand pounds. On the fort mission, the four Apaches fired off over a million pounds worth of munitions. One of the crew (female, as it happened), accounted for about half that total. Needless to say, they were "Winchester" when they got back to base. A-10 fans will be pleased to know that one makes a nice, scene-stealing cameo, too.
  12. Indulged some curiosity and looked into the first five episodes of After War Gundam-X. Gundam-X? Came between Wing and SEED? Yes, its a Gundam series. No, really it exists. Honest...
  13. Porco Rosso, a beautiful tribute to an era that never quite existed by Hayao Miyazaki. Yukikaze - gorgeous flying sequences and the only anime character ever designed to look like a bearded lady. Area 88: They abandoned God and shook hands with the devil... they are the mercenaries consigned to Area 88... Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind: somewhat more fantastical, but with some superb flying sequences. WWII is obviously a somewhat sensitive issue for the Japanese, which is a little bit of a shame considering their talent for animating flying sequences. Theres a superb anime just waiting to be made about a WWII flying squadron...
  14. My view is that Tomino directed Chars Counterattack. They're deader than flares.
  15. Nah - Cosmo gets a far better deal than Shinji ever did... If anyones interested, good and pretty heroic overview of Ideon here: http://counter-x.blogspot.com/2008/12/ideon-full-guide.html
  16. Odd thing about Anno - he seems to crop up a lot in the background; apparently he did some uncredited work on Project A-Ko. There was a time when DVDs were just starting to get commentaries and there was a period where I would have been surprised if his name wasn't mentioned eventually on a commentary track... If you liked Eva, you could always try the original (unfortunately not available commercially at present) - Space Runaway Ideon...
  17. Just... just... look, cast who you want, let George Lucas write it, hire Uwe Boll as director... do what the hell you want. Just leave the composer alone. We'll watch it with our eyes closed if need be.
  18. Pff, some SF franchises have been doing time travel for forty years. Its not so hard... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez6af3tXBng&...feature=related
  19. Good grief, I thought this kind of question died with VHS and Daisy-Chained fansub recordings...! One other thing to watch out for, though I doubt it will affect you - Blu-Ray DVD regions are different to "normal" DVD regions. You know, they actually considered dropping region-encoding during the format wars...
  20. I may well be wrong on this, but I seem to recall it was a Green Lantern title that caused the trouble. Or maybe they just saw some of the stuff he was doing/had done for 2000AD in the UK and tried to head him off at the pass...
  21. Seems that whoever the next Who is, it won't be Robert Carlyle: http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/12/robert-carlyle.html Daleks everywhere breathe a sigh of relief, Goa'uld start bricking themselves.
