Is Anime insulting your intelligence?
F-ZeroOne replied to Excillon's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Having watched some Zambot 3 recently, frankly I think the creators of Sailor Moon should be worried about being sued by Tomino... ("Full Moon Atta - wait, I mean Moon Tiara Action!"). I am, always have been, and always will be a mecha fan but I also have a soft spot for romantic comedies, and have watched more Sailor Moon than is probably healthy for me... If I find the concept of something interesting, I'll watch it - I'm just more likely to watch it if big robots can be involved somehow. -
There already has been on PC - Shogo, Mobile Armour Division. It wasn't bad.

No, no, no, you got that wrong - you meant who would play Khans chest!

Yes, my first thought was "Thats not a very good model of a F-14!"...

I guess the other mecha pilot archetype is the Go Nagai one - kind of an arsehole but a good kid at heart. Tomino can do likeable - Uso from V-Gundam is pretty likeable (though somewhat younger than previous Gundam pilots) and Loran from Turn-A is probably the nicest Gundam pilot ever, but yes, I'd say much of it can be pinned on him. -
Seems obvious now I think of it, but though I'd read the F-111B was a naval variant for the interception role I'd never considered that would mean it would need a different radome...!

If you're using "Ranga" as the term I think you are [1], as opposed to some obscure Doctor Who species, the last companion was also one... Knight26 - Stephen Moffat, who wrote "The Silence in the Library" is now the series producer for the Matt Smith Who, so its entirely possible we will see her again. Personally, though, I wouldn't mind if they don't - its nice to leave some things to the imagiantion sometimes (this is also the reason why The Time War has also always been referred to, rather than seen - I think Russell T. Davis said that any visual depiction would never match expectation; of course, they could just be saving it all up for a movie... [2]) [1] When did the kids stop speaka my language? [2] If they did decide to do that, I'd love them to use the Doctors line from "Gridlock" as the tagline - "They lost. Everyone lost... "

Matt Smith has his companion: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8073734.stm In other news, David Tennant is confirmed to be making a guest appearance as the Doctor in junior Who spin off The Sarah Jane Adventures, whilst a UK newspaper was reporting that a "Who movie, starring Tennant, is in the works with a script being prepared". You might want to note that last one tends to come round more often than the tax man...

Supposedly they're looking into making a laser weapon pod for the F-35. I suspect theres a ways to go yet.

Chaps? Better keep the lid on those Marmite [1] deliveries to Basra, at least for the time being... [1] A sandwich spread popular in the UK and some other countries. Famous for either tasting like a) mana of the gods or b) something your dog chewed on for a day. There is no middle ground with Marmite.

Is Anime insulting your intelligence?

Actually, I think Evangelion took its inspiration from something else - heres an extract from a review I did of the series I'm thinking of; can you tell what it is yet? Guess the anime title! Here are your clues: This anime features mecha piloted by youngsters who barely understand what they're doing, and which are protected from harm by an intensely powerful force field generated by the human will. In the same anime you find quasi-religious overtones which involve the appearance of a entity so powerful, it is both a harbinger of life and death and an unstoppable manifestation of the human psyche. In this anime, you will see the decapitation of a character who appears in only a couple of episodes but who nonetheless makes a powerful emotional mark on the lead protagonist. This anime has an inconclusive ending, caused by outside pressure; it is open to multiple interpretations, and a definite "true" finish appears in the film spin-off. Guessed which title I'm talking about yet? Well, lets see if you're right - the answer on the card is... ...Space Runaway Ideon. -
Who's the biggest horndog in all of anime?
F-ZeroOne replied to Wanzerfan's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Cosmo from Ideon. See the ending of "Be Invoked" for why. No mention of Char...?! -
Hmm-hmm, I've always argued Turn-A is a pretty good science-fiction series in its own right and its reasonably possible to watch it without really knowing anything about previous Gundams, perhaps its biggest advantage over the original UC series in an international market. Which again makes it all the stranger we still don't have a a Western release yet...

Shin has a flaming unicorn symbol as his personal insignia. So not only is he a killer ace pilot, he sets unicorns on fire just to have a cool image.

To quote Granny Weatherwax: "See clear! Don't let the glamour get you! See whats in front of your eyes! Its a damn great horse with a horn on the end!" You going to be the one to tell Amuro Ray and Shin from Area 88 that they play with the My Little Ponies?

Best Science FACT movie of all time??
F-ZeroOne replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
There was a very watchable movie made of The Andromeda Strain in the 70s. Featured a split screen filming technique for some scenes. -
Wait - who told you that? You're not supposed to know!

Just seen it. I enjoyed it, though I have some niggles like a few people about the science (okay, I say niggles, more like "Just hire Professor Hawking to help with the tech stuff next time, okay?!" ). I would also like SF to remember that the future is supposed to look like the future and not some waste processing plant in Wales...

Theres a website called "Good Old Games" where these games can be downloaded individually: http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/ I've just downloaded Fallout 2 from there after playing 3 for weeks. Its been ages since I've played a game like that!

Granted, modern missiles are much better than they used to be ("Theres a reason they're not called hittiles... ") but I seem to recall hearing that line before...

To be fair, the actual text of the article is more accurate...

Clearly the subspace distortion caused as it engages the warp engines... Apparently the UK will be buying Tranche 3 of the Eurofighter Typhoon, though its still a little unclear how many will actually remain in the UK. Apparently we now also have "Tranche 3a" and "Tranche 3b"...

Not much seen there, but I got a nice "old school" feel from that. Proper Gundam! Am the only one who reads "Gundam Unicorn" as "Gundam Unicron"...?
