  1. Little Typhoon tid-bit: you might recall that during World War II, the island of Malta was at one point defended by a famous trio of Gloster Gladiator biplanes. They were named "Faith, Hope and Charity" [1]. Well, the Falkland Islands is currently defended by a four-plane detachment of Typhoons. They've been named Faith, Hope, Charity and... ...Desperation. [1] Actually, I seem to recall there were actually more than just the three, but thats the legend...
  2. Thanks for the F-14 answers, everyone! anime52k8, I suppose thats possible, but I suspect that sooner or later its going to get rather messy...
  3. http://www.vectorsite.net/avparsit.html Parasite fighters are one of those "Hmm, thats a nice idea but... " things that crop up now and again, usually with unpleasant results for the flight crews involved. Up until now, though, I hadn't known about the Boeing 747 "Microfighter" carrier concept, which is really something that should be a G.I. Joe playset and also proves that all those flying aircraft carriers in Ace Combat games are only mostly nuts. Couple of odd designation thoughts that popped into my head - as theres already a F-35A, B and C what are they going to call improved variants down the line? And I know about the F-14A, A+ (later B) and D, but what/where was the C?
  4. I was browsing TV Tropes yesterday and came across an interesting little tid-bit that explains one of the more bizarre plot points of Turn-A Gundam; apparently the reason for Loran making good use of the more feminine side of his nature during the series is that Tomino originally wanted a female lead character, but the money men wouldn't let him. This might also explain the relatively strong female roles elsewhere in the show. Which once again goes to prove that if you're going to pick a fight with Yoshiyuki Tomino, get used to regretting it later.
  5. Its already been pointed out, but Gundam novels might not be the best place to rely on for evidence about what happened; Tomino kills off Amuro Ray in the first Gundam novels after all! Personally, I've always felt that the clue is simply in the director. He wasn't at the time exactly known for being sentimental about characters. The other story I've read (again, without being able to say how true it is) is that Tomino really wanted Char and Amuro to die but Bandai forced him to make the deaths more ambiguous.
  6. Don't worry, the Major will be along shortly with a standard issue Really Big Gun to sort things out.
  7. When one is jet-lagged and existing in that special state of mind that can only be experienced after 12 hours sat in an airliner, it only adds to the feeling of unreality when the guy at the immigration desk at Narita airport tells you that he likes your Autobot symbol shirt and that he used to be interested in Transformers too.
  8. There were a lot of people who were disappointed that Sally Sparrow was not the new companion. Mind you, having seen some of the pictures floating about recently, I don't think that disappointment will last long.
  9. Now you're going to have to get a Razgriz emblem for your beret - Ace Combat is coming to your iPhone: http://kotaku.com/5391681/hands+on-with-ace-combat-xi I imagine that sales of Top Gun soundtracks will increase by several thousand percent when this is released.
  10. Just a reminder that Sarah Jane Smith will be getting a very special guest in this weeks episode of the "Sarah Jane Adventures". Can you guess Who that might be...?
  11. Did they win that scheme by completing an Ace Combat game?!
  12. Er... hate to tell you this, but it looks like you got the missile pod on the wing in backwards...

    Global figure?

It looks close because Gainax based the Captain Nemo from Nadia on Captain Global!
  14. Do you mean the Turn-X Gundam or the Gundam-X. There is a difference... If its the former, I believe he did, and that originally it was actually intended to be the Turn-A design...
  15. Okay, so it might not belong to the 1/60s at all. Thanks!
  16. No, I know what those look like. Its a much larger piece than that. Heres a pic, sorry for the truly awful quality; the flash kept wiping out the image due to the white plastic of the piece...!
  17. Sorry, I don't know. Its the VF-1S which came with the Strike and Super parts.
  18. I have a couple of Yamato needle-nose 1/60 VF-1s I'm looking to get rid of shortly; I've been rounding up parts and have found a piece which I vaguely remember is a sort of "fill-in" piece for the torso. Trouble is, I can't remember if it came with the original, first release VF-1A (Hikaru) or the later VF-1S Roy with Strike parts. Any help, as always, appreciated!
  19. Haibane Renmei final episode. I have no idea what happened, but whatever it was, it was happy sad. And Doctor Ben dying in Star Fleet. You don't kill main characters when you're eight in the 80s. It. Just. Does. Not. Happen!
  20. Okay, sorry, I'm a bit tired at the moment and I'm probably not even sure what I'm thinking entirely... Yes, Tomino did Zambot 3. Where he first displayed his caring nature towards children...
  21. VFTF-1, I thought I'd reply here to your comments about Tomino you made in the figures thread as it seems more on-topic here. One of the best comments I've read about Tomino is that he is awesome at creating worlds but somewhat less so at sustaining a narrative. It might be the J.K. Rowling problem - when you created your nations most famous popular culture product, there isn't an editor on the planet thats going to say "Uh, actually, maybe you want to trim a couple hundred pages here?"... Its also worth bearing in mind that the way in which we watch older anime shows is not the way Japanese audiences watched those shows when originally broadcast; Ideons battles get repetitive watched in four episode blocks (as I tend to do) but might have been less so for little Anno [1] who excitedly rushed home from class to see Cosmo afro-kickin' butt each week. Its your opinion, of course, and if you don't like him thats fine. I think going by your posts you admire his creations but not the way in which he uses them, in the same way that lots of people want to be a Jedi but want a word with George Lucas about Jar-Jar Binks... [1] No, I didn't choose that name by accident...
  22. I never actually got that far. I've bought the damn game three times and still never completed it. Currently I don't own a suitable platform to play it on. Maybe when I'm old and grey and the grand kids ask what I did during the Console Wars... Also, Ghost Train, if you haven't seen Gunbuster - do so. Yesterday.
  23. The original. And still the best. DAR-LING!
  24. Its a cliché. The gaming cliché. But... Aerrriiisssssssss!
