  1. Oh, and while I think of it - posisbly streatching the definition of "Mech" here a little bit, but a "collectors" Dalek. Again, there have been plenty of toys but nothing sort of "Chogokin" standard. I have one of the "Ironside" variants and its a real shame it doesn't have a voice feature to deliver the best Dalek line ever:
  2. The obvious one for me is Big Dai-X from "X-Bomber"/"Star Fleet". Takatoku made some pretty good toys back in the day but a "Soul of Chogokin" style treatment would be awesome: The other would be the "Turn-A Gundam" from... go on, guess. There have been a few toys before as well, a couple of them pretty decent, but nothing really "preminum"...
  3. Scary scenes in London today as a helicopter reportedly clipped a crane in misty weather and crashed into the streets; two people (the pilot and a bystander) are reported to have been killed and several hurt. Having said that, the incident could have been a lot worse as it occurred close to at least two major London train stations as well as the M.I.6 building (technically the Secret Intelligence Service building but I doubt that even Mr. Bond calls it that). http://www.bbc.co.uk...ngland-21040410
  4. One thing about CCA - it does at least look gorgeous, one of the very last examples of big-screen 80s anime. I personally like the movie a lot, but Tomino has always had a distinctive directorial style that may not be to everyones taste. It is also all right not to like something - thats something that took this once-bright-eyed anime fan a long time to learn... (as long as, in general, you have reasonable objections that you can explain - though we all have our irrationalities... )
  5. Steven Moffat seems to be more keen than Russell T. Davies was to pay homage to previous Who lore.
  6. The Christmas special isn't the first time the Doctor has run into... ahem... "abominable snowmen" and "The Great Intelligence" is apparently related to that but I have to admit, that reference went over my head as well until it was explained!
  7. One of those posts I wish I hadn't had to make... Thanks everyone for reminding me about "UFO", which as has been said, was in some ways ahead of its time. Its trouble was the same as probably haunted Anderson all his career - he was the "puppetmaster", which is pretty much how the British media is reporting this (it was interesting to see io9, which as far as I'm aware is a US site, give more emphasis to "Space: 1999"). Regarding the second season of "Space: 1999", I recall a story about the second season - they bought over a US producer or script-writer, and he came up to Anderson and said "Heres what the new episode is called - 'The Rules of Luton!". And Anderson kind of looked at him funny and said "Luton? Where did you get that name?". The writer/producer replied "Why, I saw it on a road-sign as I was driving to the studio!". (Luton is a town in the UK...! Please note that I am not trying to bash US-based writers etc, just giving an example of the sort of things Anderson had to work with occasionally!).
  8. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-20845407 We never got the future Gerrys shows promised, but that wasn't his fault - the world decided that it needed shinier phones more than Mach-7 atomic-pile powered transatlantic airliners. Farewell, and thank you for that future, and for making it explode on a regular basis.
  9. I won't spoil it for you, but I don't believe this - some of the scenes were filmed at Dunkeswell airfield; thats just down the road from me, I've flown in a light aircraft from there a few years back!
  10. Broadcast time is 21:30 GMT this evening on BBC2.
  11. For those who enjoyed Captain Slows "Toy Stories", a new one will be broadcast over the Christmas period in the UK - "Flight Club", which apparently will revolve around an attempt to fly a giant balsa-wood glider across the English Channel (!).
  12. 0083 has good (90s) music and great for the time animation and design. It works, but theres no getting away from the fact that the lead characters primary distingishing trait is that he is deathly afraid of carrots.
  13. All the Top Gear presenters have made individual TV programmes on various subjects, and to a greater or lesser degree they're all fairly good presenters in their own right. May is probably the best, though when he jettisons his blokey-alpha male persona Clarkson can be pretty damn good (as when he presented a programme about his father-in-law, a Victoria Cross winner, or one he did on the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel - that was part of a poll-based series about the "Hundred Greatest Britons" and Clarkson was credited with near single-handely boosting Brunel to almost the top spot). Hammond is, er, the most prolific... The Hornby one was filmed semi-locally to me...
  14. I honestly can't believe that its taken this long for someone to think "You know what would work in 'Doctor Who'? Killer Snowmen!"...
  15. Actually, there was an armed experimental version of the SR-71 - the YF-12 (possibly its more accurate to say that the SR-71 was an unarmed version of the A-12/YF-12... ). Lockheed also considered fitting bombs to it...
  16. The demo is out on Steam. I haven't had a lot of time with it, but... It's not quite your Daddy's X-Com, but first impression is that's its going to be a very worthy heir. It's also every bit as cruel as you remember -something you'll learn in the *tutorial*!
  17. Alex Garland, who wrote the script, has stated that in early drafts Judge Death and the other Dark Judges featured. Then the budget intervened. Hes also stated that in a hypothetical sequel, he would like to have the Dark Judges make an appearance...
  18. Saw this the other day. Its very, very good. Also, very, very violent. I would really like to see a sequel.
  19. Er... it wasn't in the episode, it was a cross-dimensional joke...?
  20. "My girlfriend is a Dalek now, shes a Dalek NOW!" was dressed in a red dress when she wasn't clad in a metal cyborg killing unit. I think thats where some confusion is creeping in. The robots weren't so much "based on" as indeed played by the UK comedians David Mitchell and Robert Webb. Mitchell does quite a few panel comedy shows in the UK, "Q.I" among them (he was involved in the infamous "giant tortoise" debate on that programme). The duo together are probably most famous for a comedy show called "The Peep Show".
  21. The first question I can remember asking my parents was "Who was the first man on the Moon?". I've always been a bit of a space cadet; Neil Armstrong was why.
  22. UK airdate for the new Who series has been confirmed - 1st September, 19:20 GMT. Spoiler follows for first episode title: There will also be a web exclusive mini-series following the homelife of the Ponds, called, um, "Pondlife" from 27th August. Not sure if that will be available in all regions, though.
