Don't worry, I totally understand the mentality of awards nights. The lead singer of an Australian band here, The Church, put it best a few years ago when he observed that by accepting an award at a wankfest ceremony, you are essentially admitting that there are those who are better/more talented than you The industries snobbery towards SF and Fantasy is pretty typical. LOTR:ROTK only got the Academy awards it did when it was clear that the Academy was making itself truly irrelevant by ignoring these films. I think that Mira Sorvino sold her award on the steps too.... Taksraven

The Amazing Spider-Man, on Blu-Ray/DVD Nov. 9, 2012
taksraven replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
God, talking about the old Batman films is, in a way, totally out of date, but scarily enough it is totally relevant to talking about the Spiderman franchise at the moment. You could spend thousands of words dissecting what was wrong with the Batman films of the 80's and 90's, and a lot of the arguments about where they went wrong are very strong ones, but at the end of the day one fact cannot be denied. The franchise needed a break. Hollywood studio's should be reported to animal cruelty authorities in regards to how they treat their cash cows. They flog them to incessantly and are then surprised when they die. The Spiderman franchise is going down this path. We don't need another Spiderman film in the next two or three years, its simply been done and the franchise should be left alone for the better part of ten years. I'm not saying that Spiderman is finished as a film franchise, its just run its course for now. Getting back to Batman, it was a classic example of how a franchise can be brought back after a prolonged break and still be successful. Mind you, it does not always work. The Superman franchise being a good example. Personally, however, I think that the theatregoing audiences would have been fine with Superman back in the cinemas as long as there had been a decent cast and coherent script, which Superman Returns lacked badly. Thats the thing, do we really need the Star Wars films, etc in 3D? Isn't Mr Lucas rich enough? Taksraven

Yeah, I noticed that one of his posts wasn't towing the Robotech/HG line as well. So what does that mean. Eventually we will have him here lying his head off and claiming how he always preferred Macross to Robotech. (Since this place is Robotech Refugee Center No.1) Do we embrace people who have been real dickheads to us and Macross in the past?? I mean, sure, I started off on Robotech when I didn't know any better, but as soon as I learnt about the true origins of Robotech I swore off it pretty quickly, I didn't persist in being an idiot. (I am sure that there are those who will say otherwise.) What if things go really sour and we end up with the likes of MEMO here one day? Do we say "Thats ok, we don't mind that you spread disinformation and insulted most of us, we will turn the other cheek." So what are the general consensus's and attitudes? What do the mods think? Heard a media report today about the SAG (Screen Actors Guild, or was that Film Actors Guild? I can't remember.) awards. They were talking about how Avatar didn't get a look in with these awards, due to the fact that the cast were "computer assisted" (I think that was the wording) Here's a link to a Yahoo story that mentions it in the first few paragraphs.... Sounds like a stupid state of affairs to me, it probably could be compared to the original Tron not getting any Academy Awards nominations for special effects because they "cheated" and used computers to assist. Well, in the first post I suggested it could be as daft as a brush. Here are some of the more enjoyable quotes from Rottentomato's for those who can't be bothered clicking on links.... Ouch! Welllll.........you never know...... But this one tops it off for ROFL..... Full points for the Wonderful Life crossreference.... Taksraven

Actually, thats a really interesting question too and I bet there has been sweet FA research into that. I know that some people who wear glasses hate having to wear *two* pairs in the cinemas and I was having trouble focussing on the screen during Avatar (but I suspect that was more due to the fact that I need glasses) Taksraven

Worst science ficton book of all time.
taksraven replied to Wanzerfan's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Same as the "Worst film' thread to a large degree, it doesn't matter who makes crap because Asylum is always out there making crappier stuff. The best thing to go after are more "Well respected" works that are overrated shite. Thats why I will choose Dune. Not so much for the original book itself (that was barely passable, but at least an attempt to do something different), but for the terrible works that it spawned, and I don't just mean the stuff written by others after the death of Herbert. A lot of the stuff he wrote himself after the original was god awful. (Fish Speakers, Honoured Matres, etc.... FFS) The stuff written after his death is just icing on the cake on proving how crappy it is. I think that the Dune books had the same sort of thing as Stephen King books. They are so thick that stupid people carry them around to pretend that they are "intellectual". Taksraven -
Just interested in hearing some opinions on this matter. Don't want this thread to just be the "Lets bag 3D" pinata, but I think its going to become more and more interesting how this medium goes as time goes on. As we all well know now, it seems that just about every action/SF film that is slated for release over the next few years will be in 3D. Admittedly the technology has been vastly improved and it is possible to watch such films in relative comfort, but will they really be the sort of thing that Cinema's have been screaming for for years to increase the allegedly decreasing box-office turnover. (I say allegedly 'cause I think that 2009 was supposed to be one of the most profitable box-office years EVER) But even then, with 3D tv screens being developed, will cinema be able to maintain its hold over its audience. What really got me thinking about starting this thread though, and the reason why I think it needs its own thread rather than being dumped into the technology thread, is the fact that I was reading on Rotten Tomato's that there are plans for the Star Wars films to be re-released in 3D in the cinema's. I know this has already happened with the first two Toy Story films but with the possiblity that every big action-blockbuster from the last 50 years might be "adapted" to 3D and re-released in cinema's, is this the sort of thing that we want to see? I know that the studio's will love it. Getting to release stuff that is already made back into the cinema's to make more money. (Actually, does anybody know how much it costs to adapt pre-existing material to 3D), but I wonder what the point is anyway, since older films were not made with this format in mind. I can imagine that there will be pressure for films like the LOTR series to be converted quickly. Just interested in what others are thinking. Is this just the latest fad that everybody will jump on for a while, with the possiblity that audiences may tire of them, or is this the real future of cinema?

Which "random pic" are you objecting to? The pic in post #26 is something that I photoshopped myself to reflect the statement that Azrael made about Pokemon, Avatar and seizures. The pic I posted in #28 was quoting VF5SS. I don't want this thread shut down. I know that I did not behave well in the last Avatar thread and I am sorry for that, but I thought that I had been behaving myself in this one. A7 beat me to the punch because I had been thinking about starting a thread dedicated to a possible Avatar sequel, and it would have had a similar request about doing the right thing at the start. Ah, no. The remaining reactors (No's 1,2, and 3) were allowed to keep operating as long as possible after 1986. The last operating reactor on the site (Number 3) was shut down in December, 2000. From Wikipedia.... Just being a nerd, but there was a huge controversy when the remaining reactors were allowed to keep operating after the accident, but Ukraine had a power shortage... Taksraven

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time
taksraven replied to JELEINEN's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Indeed he might have, but at the end of the day Lawrence of Arabia was the most human and hopefully the most accurate in its portrayal of such a dilemma. Lawrence had contempt for people on all three sides of the conflict that he was involved in (and thats just lumping the arabs together in one faction even though there were several), but at the end of the day he probably wanted to see beyond stupid nationalities and politics, a more humanist approach. Avatar is quite cartoonish and simplistic by comparison, god knows how bad the Princess of Mars would be?? Taksraven -
