Yeah, it did suck. In fact the animation for that entire episode after he died was terrible. Not a nice tribute to any character. Taksraven

Personally, I think that the effect was achieved better in the Robotech edit, with the vision of the fighter breaking apart (the sight of the cockpit window shattering really helped to emphasise the horror) and Richard Epcars ( a great voice actor) blood curdling scream over the top of it. ("IT'S TOO LATE RICK, I CAN'T AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!") Many years later I did see the original Macross version of his death and to me it was nowhere near as horrifying. As an early teen, this was an incredibly shocking death to see during the Saturday morning cartoons at 8am (clearly the Ten Network was not reviewing the tapes of the series themselves, otherwise it would have been cut). The death was also a real shock because it was in the episode right after the one featuring Roy's death. I was not expecting another major character death and especially so soon after the last one.

Macross Frontier News Thread IV *Read 1st post*

I can't be bothered reading the whole threat. So is episode 25 going to be the final. If so, is it really called "Your sound"??? Taksraven -
Hang on! I thought that (insert persons name) was dead!

Who is going to die in Macross Frontier???
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
I don't think that they would have time to squeeze that in. In fact, there are so many loose threads at the moment I am getting worried about a real rush job to tie them all up. (remember Macross Zero, the classic example) Taksraven -

Ranka Lee - Innocent naive teenager or Evil war criminal
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
Thanks for posting those quotes, very informative. It seems that most of the extreme Ranka hatred stems from the fact that she is not perfect. Strange since nobody can achieve true perfection (except me, of course). I am a high school teacher and trust me, I deal with teenage girls who are far more terrifying than Ranka. I'm not saying that she would be a model student, but I think few teachers would dislike her. Taksraven -
I dunno if this has happened to anybody else here, but at times a person appears in the media who I thought was dead. An example of this happened to me last night. I was watching a doco about the comedy series Ripping Yarns and who should appear to talk about his role in the series, but Kenneth Colley. (aka Admiral Piett in Star Wars and Jesus in Life of Brian, he also played The Traveller in "Return to Waterloo".) Quite a shock since I believed that I had heard of his death several years ago. (I checked, and he is still alive) This also happened with Dino De Laurentis years ago, when I heard reports that he had died. Has anybody else had this happen to them. I think that in the pre-internet days a lot of incorrect deaths were reported and people were not able to check too easily. Its always wonderful to find out that a person believed dead is still alive. Just wondering. Taksraven

Ranka Lee - Innocent naive teenager or Evil war criminal
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
Help, the cynicism from this post is dripping on me, AAARRGHHHH!!!! Taksraven -
WE will know that its not him and WE will notice. Your argument reminds me of the bit in Hitch-Hikers when the mice want to cut out Arthurs brain and replace it with an electronic one. Zaphod observes that all you would have to do is program the robot to say "Where's the tea" and nobody would know the difference. Arthur says that HE will know the difference and Zaphod explains that he won't because he will be programmed not to notice the difference. Taksraven

I think that it is difficult for the extreme haters to back up their opinions, that explains the no show. Taksraven -
Exactly right.

I agree that it is possible to starve the trolls out but sometimes I prefer to just deprive them of oxygen (in other words explain why their arguments are crap) Taksraven -
Ranka Lee - Innocent naive teenager or Evil war criminal
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
I think that if we maintain a civil and intelligent discussion here and don't degenerate into petty name calling we should be pretty safe from a lock. Saying that, I am still pretty sure that this will end up being locked anyway since some rabid Ranka hater is sure to appear here and ruin it for everybody. Thats a fair comment and I am not just automatically opposed to anybody who dislikes Ranka, but as you have observed, some of the hatred is VERY ferocious and unreasonable. I guess thats a problem in a lot of anime and SF fandom in general. (Star trek had similar problems when a lot of fans decided that they would have nearly homicidal hatred towards Wesley Crusher) Taksraven -
Ranka Lee - Innocent naive teenager or Evil war criminal
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
I wasn't trying to encourage it by starting this thread, I was just trying to get this discussion out into the open. The main reason I started it was because of some of the more extreme accusations being levelled at Ranka at the moment, including one I saw the other day when she pretty much was being called a war criminal for hiding and helping Ai-kun, like she was deliberately helping the enemy. Taksraven -
A true unsung legend lost, what a pity..... Taksraven (Yay, in before the lock)

There is a fair amount of discussion about the Ranka so maybe it warrants its own thread. Its the nature of the discussion that amuses me, with many being annoyed at her for various reasons and there is even a hardcore group of haters that would seem to be happy to see her executed for crimes against humanity. Well here is your chance to voice your opinion, but remember, keep it nice! Taksraven

You are right, this is a Macross Renaissance of the type that we haven't seen since the days of Macross Plus. There is so much stuff around now that it is brilliant. The only aspect that bothers me is the fact that it is very likely that once Frontier ends we will probably have to wait for the 30th anniversary to get new Macross. I don't mind as long as the quality is good, but the long waits are annoying. Especially, since as fair as I am concerned, there are few other shows that enertain me as much. Taksraven

Who had the manliest death in Macross?

What about Nora??!! Even though she was anti-UN I would not classify her as evil. She had a nasty end.... And I think that a vulture is sitting on Canaria's shoulder. Taksraven -
Who had the manliest death in Macross?
taksraven replied to sucker4meltrans's topic in Movies and TV Series
Correct. The only parts you missed was the way he disappeared like a star/meteor/comet in the distance (how sad) and then, right at the VERY end, just when you think that things could not get any sadder, the final shot of Michel's smashed glasses on the floor. (this shot was similar to the one of Gendo's broken glasses in Evangelion, but the context is different) Truly heartbreaking, but brilliant and enjoyable as well in a strange way. Very few character deaths in any show are set out this well. Taksraven -

I think that its an OUTSTANDING death. If only all those who died in war were able to make it count in such a way. It was similar to the death of one of the characters in the film Dark Star (the one who went floating off with the phoenix asteroids) as well as the death of South Burning in Stardust Memory.
