New WATERWORLD extended edition DVD
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You are right about that, I think that the ad budget for some of these "blockbusters" must nearly equal or surpass the actual production budget. The best profit I ever heard of was the LOTR trilogy where the profits for the first film were roughly equal to the production costs of all three films. (correct me if i'm wrong) So in other words the last two films were essentially making pure profit when they were released. Taksraven -
New WATERWORLD extended edition DVD
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Its like when T2 was released and I think at the time that it was touted as being the most expensive film made up until that point, but at least you could see where all the money went AND it was worth it, being an enjoyable movie and quite possibly a contender for one of the best sequels ever. And the CG in T2 STILL rocks by todays standards. Brilliant stuff. Taksraven -

Anybody have idea of how expensive Macross Frontier was to make? How would this compare to the budget of other anime series that are also being run now? I was just wondering about this. Also, how would the budget of Frontier compare to other Macross productions in the past? Another thing I was wondering about was how long it would take to make a show like Frontier. What about the production schedule, was it all finished by the time the first episode went to air this year, or would they still have been working on it? Taksraven

Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
taksraven replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Crown or devils horns? Makes it look a little bit more satanic to me which I like. I doubt that they could ever surpass the original designs though. I agree that the Eva's have a truly unique design, I think its the fact that they don't look like gridiron players in armour that really set them apart from a lot of other anime "robots". (Yes, I know that they're NOT robots). Taksraven -
Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone

Fantastic! I am loving this. Some people whinge that it is recycling but I am LOVING the fact that we are revisiting Evangelion. Who needs crappy hollywood remakes when we can have this brilliance? Taksraven -

New WATERWORLD extended edition DVD
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah, how many cheaper (and probably better) films could have been made using its budget. Its funny, everybody bags out Plan 9 from Outer Space as the worst film of all time, but when you consider its miniscule budget and low production values I think that a crappy "Big Budget blockbuster" films like Waterworld is much worse. Sinking that much money into it and the result is STILL absolute garbage? What a waste! Taksraven -
But not necessarily for ER and Jurassic Park, which all of the media was mentioning in the obits. I think that his best works were The Andromeda Strain (good book AND film, a rare combination) and Westworld. He was really plagiarising himself with Jurassic Park, which was a Westworld ripoff. We will miss him and his genius. Taksraven

WOW, a new EXTENDED edition of Waterworld on DVD. GREAT! Just what I always wanted, a better chance to view Kev's bald patch. Its a REALLY GREAT movie. The best cure for insomnia ever. And talk about realistic and logical. Like the bit where they get attacked by the guys who are waiting underwater with their jetski's, wearing scuba gear. Like they just sit there all day waiting to attack. And the BABE Jean Tripplehorn. Man, she is HOT! And its GOT A MESSAGE!! We HAVE to look after the environment apparently. Who knew? I'm getting my copy ASAP!! Taksraven

The only problem I had with the Instructor vs student thing is that they looked to be the same age. It might have worked better if Ivanov was a couple of decades older, scarred face or something like that. (I know thats a bit cliched). Its only really a minor quibble though, the struggle was still great. Taksraven

Looks like another "Apes" movie might be in the works, but this time they are talking about a remake of "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes". Weird, eh..... http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/081103f.php Taksraven

Like I said on one of my posts on this topic, the confrontations between them were still a bit "sterile" because they were not hurling insults at each other as well. (Well they kinda were, but not so they could hear each other). Communication between the two would have added a lot to their struggle. Saying that, I think that the slo-mo moment where both pilots first saw and recognised each other was one of the greatest Macross moments ever. Taksraven

Minor details that you enjoyed in Macross Frontier.....

I especially liked it when they used the radar monitor as a bouncy ball for an eyecatch in one episode. I agree with all of your other points, I was going to mention ranka's phone. The did an excellent effort in fleshing out the details in the city too. Oh, and I liked the big restaurant/centre in the roof of the citydome. Especially the glass floor. Taksraven -

Is this still the type of thread that you don't take home to motha? Bring back that subtitle, an excellent play on words. Taksraven -
Well, here is a place where you can mention relatively small details from the series that you thought enhanced overall enjoyment. I enjoyed a few things. Firstly, I thought that the CG asteroids in the series looked really cool. The fact that they were pretty much fully 3D objects made them an interesting part of the background. This was highlighted in the episodes "Friendly Fire" when Michel was constantly using them as anchoring stations for his sniping (I loved the sweeping panorama shot pulling away from him lying on the asteroid as he tried to target the Vajra) and "Northern Cross" when the fighting valks were blowing the icy asteroids apart. I also liked the colour of the asteroids, they didn't look like brown piles of dirt like they did at the start of Macross Plus. Another detail I enjoyed was the new space-fold entry/exit effect. A very nice light show with cool sound effects to match. Lets hope that the use similar effects in future Macross projects. Well, feel free to add anything minor from the series that you may have enjoyed. Taksraven

Totally agree with that one. The whole episode was brilliant (especially the little pre-opening titles snippet) One of the best confrontations in Frontier and the Vajra were not even involved! But then again, Valk on Valk action always works well in Macross. I love to see it, and Frontier had some truly classic moments. Oh, that reminds me, the confrontation between Ozma and Alto in Northern Cross was a truly classic frontier battle. Great action, great music, great dialogue, you can't go wrong with it. Taksraven

The one between Guld and Isamu in ep 4 easily, but for a number of reasons. Its not just the great mecha action, its the abusive banter between the two, the whole history between the pair climaxing and the fact that they are using such great fighters. Next one I would give it to would be Hikaru Vs Britai. A short but great fight highlighting the strength of the Zentradi and Hikaru's determination to keep going. (like when he fires the horn lasers when he is pinned to the wall.) The fight between Ivanov and Fokker in Episode 2 was another great battle. It would have been enhanced if the pilots were communicating with each other. It would have been interesting to hear what they had to say. As for the best in Frontier, one of the best would have to be the one between Klan and Brera in episode 9. A brief encounter but a lot of fun, especially when Klan things she has nailed him. Love that bit. Then straight after that when Brera goes against Alto, another classic encounter. To be honest though, I love all of episode 9, even Alto's struggle with the Vajra in that one is a classic. Also love the one from episode 7 when Alto is stuck in the Vajra mother ship and is going up against the Yellows. First a direct hit in the back, then in the arm, then he changes his gunpod to the other arm ( a nice little detail that I think a few missed) and then getting his head blown off and going into gerwalk. Another classic little encounter. Taksraven

Don't worry, I have no doubts that he is a charming man, but the early stages of his life certainly sound like they were very difficult, culminating in the scariest part of the book where he details a suicide attempt. Even though he doesn't really say it in so many words, I think being cast as Doctor Who probably saved his life. He was working as a builder when he was cast, and I think that speaks volumes. As for who would make a good Who now, its hard to say. I certainly think that Robert Carlyle would be great but I suspect that he may be a little bit too old now. I think that the days of older men playing the Doctor are now long gone. Taksraven
