I think that Cohen's "Hallelujah" is much more overused. Gets a bit annoying. I could listen to Watchtower all day. Taksraven

Stop it. That picture makes me giggle incessantly. (I do like it though) I guess that the next thing would be to compare the factory satellite to the Earth, or maybe just a continent. It kinda reminds me of The Mekon's head. (Hows that for obscure) Really big and impractical but its still there anyway. Actually, the Grand Cannon is missing off the scale chart as well. Thats a big piece of hardware.

There isn't much of the Kennedy family left to sue Warners and DC. The assassination was not nice, I will admit, but in all honesty, as others have observed if Kennedy NOT been assassinated chances are that his name as an American President would be absolute mud now as far as history is concerned. Since he died by the assassins bullet people have been inclined to deify him to a ridiculous extent. As far as the film taking the piss and having the Comedian blasting away from the grassy knoll, well I don't normally go for conspiracy theories but as far as I am concerned and looking at the minimal evidence available to us, strange things were certainly going on that day. Therefore, the filmmakers taking their own view of the events and replaying them does not bother me. You probably won't like this either.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vASr9QwsUWg or this (but this one is a pretty cool idea.....) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7ld8O-DlHM Taksraven

I think that "Nuker of Unborn, Gay, Space Whales." should be replaced with "Accepter of condescending pedantic drivel". Taksraven

I guess that we will have to agree to disagree on that one. I won't argue with you about the nature of the Watchmen story there. Its just the same as how "Unforgiven" was meant to deconstruct the cowboy myth. I have to agree with Alan Moore about the Hannibal Lecter stories however, and consider them a "pile of wank" with little redeemable value. I don't think that the guy was already dead when his arms were cut off. And I think that Lecter really "gets the girl in the end", because she was possibly brain damaged and drugged by Lecter, not so much due to his charm and wit. I think that the orgy of violence (god, I love that expression) was just there to show how hardass Rorschach is. A bit of a celebration of his destructive capabilities. Also the part when Hooty and the chick were taking out all the prisoners. C'mon man, nobody is THAT good in unarmed combat. AND it looked cool, therefore glamourised. That touches on the broader theme of the work "Do the ends justify the means?" and that is always a tough issue. A good example I remember was when I was studying history at Uni. My lecturer told us that when Stalin had most of the Kulak people in the Soviet Union executed in the early 1930's, (How many? Anywhere between 700,000 and 60 million, pick a number), he was actually doing them a favour because they would have starved to death anyway. To me, that was always one of the most BS arguments I have ever heard in support of genocide. Similar situation at the end of Watchmen, kill millions to prevent a Nuclear war that would kill billions. Another BS argument to support genocide. I'm with Rorschach on that one. I won't start to go into the BOOK VS. FILM argument there, because its truly a nightmare. Anyway, I certainly had sympathy for Alex's victims (The catwoman rocked), but most of the other characters in the film were corrupt politicians and bureaucrats, who are really scum of the earth. Maybe, but we live in a screwed up society anyway. Taksraven

And "No devil lived on" spelled backwards is....... no wait............. Ah, to hell with it........ Semordnilaps Semordnilap is a name coined for a word or phrase that spells a different word or phrase backwards. "Semordnilap" is itself "palindromes" spelled backwards. * gateman / nametag * deliver / reviled * lamina / animal * dennis / sinned * straw / warts * star / rats * stop / pots * snap / pans * pins / snip * lived / devil * diaper / repaid * smart / trams * spit / tips * live / evil * dog / god * gut / tug * maps / spam * war / raw * was / saw * lewd / dwel (using an old spelling of "dwell") * murder / red rum Taksraven (getting a headache)

Good work sticking up for your hero, man. Taksraven

Just to clarify that, I know that he is a killer, I meant a child rapist and/or killer. Most people consider them to be much worse than ordinary killers. I think that you are on the right track there. I think that he is what Batman would end up like in the real world. A criminal on the run hated by both criminals and the police.

Note - some of the things that I talk about in this post are not for the faint-hearted, don't look at the spoilers if you don't like ultra-violence. And, just to widen the field, look at the character of Alex in A Clockwork Orange. A killer and a rapist and still one of the most sympathetic characters in the book/film. Actually, he would be the most similar anti-hero to Rorschach. Taksraven

No, he's more like the annoying uncle that you never talk to cause if you do, no matter what you say, you will annoy him and set him off into a murderous rampage. (We all have uncles like that, or is it just me?) Seriously though, if Rorschach was a child rapist and/or killer it certainly would be much more difficult for people to see him as some sort of hero. And once again, there would be LOTS of people who would like to shoot the local constabulary in the chest with a grappling hook. Some people call them pigs for a reason. (Not me generally, but there have been times......) Taksraven

While we're at it, your avatar offends my prudish sensibilities. Female breasts larger than a mans head! Oh No! (Joke) Taksraven Evil spelled backward is "live," and we all want to live, don't we? - Mok God spelled backward is "dog", so what the hell does that mean?? - Taksraven

I just mentioned From Hell as a timeframe for the interview, I wasn't trying to bring it into the discussion. Unfortunately, ugly, poor, nasty and short are all words that could be used to describe me and I am sure plenty of others out there. Apart from unhygenic and brutish, I see nothing unpleasant about the character descriptions. All of the characters are intentionally flawed How were we off topic?? Its your choice, but wouldn't you do better to actually see the film itself so you can make up your own mind about it properly? Taksraven

I LOVE it. It looks great. For moar scale you should now have the moon on the chart!! Taksraven

Technological comparison between Macross and other Sci-fi
taksraven replied to RedWolf's topic in Movies and TV Series
I think that Star Trek, particularly from TNG onwards was fairly consistent at least with the firepower and shields of their vessels. That was for a number of reasons including... a) They made so damn much of it. b) Plot points in a lot of episodes were built around shield/phaser strength. c) The franchise has such a whiny bunch of nit-picky fans. And the consistency did pay off, like at the start of the Voyager episode "Scorpion", where you see three Borg cubes taken apart by single blasts of an unseen aliens weapons, and your immediate reaction is "WHOA, they must be a really powerful enemy." It also helped the franchise that most of the programs had very similar or the same production teams. Taksraven -
I didn't realise that was the case. Thats a GREAT way to have rights and copyright set up. They should apply that idea to the music industry, it would make things a lot fairer for artists. Taksraven

Oh come on, its always great to see Jack go splat again. See Oliver Stone's JFK if you haven't already, you'll love it. Taksraven

I totally agree. Rorschach is another in the long line of anti-hero's that populate the popular media. These anti-heroes range from Tyler Durden, through to Darth Vader and all the way to the extreme's like Hannibal Lecter. Look at the success of the TV series "Dexter". These characters do the things that many people feel that they would like to do. (I think that most, however, if put in the same situation would not emulate their anti-heroes, however.) It also extends into real life with things like people wearing Charles Manson T-Shirts and others purchasing the artworks of John Wayne Gacey. You can be that even in Jack the Rippers day there were those who did not care about his antics since he was murdering prostitutes. What is funny is that I do remember reading an interview with Alan Moore around the time that From Hell was being made into a film. He was criticising the latest Hannibal Lecter book, calling it a "pile of wank" and observing that serial killers are rarely, if ever, people who are geniuses like Lecter is supposed to be. He observed that every murder was a tragedy and even criticised Agatha Christie for turning murder into a parlour game. Maybe he needs to be so thoughtful about the nature of some of his own creations if he does not want them to be seen as heroes. Taksraven

Technological comparison between Macross and other Sci-fi

The shields in SW are nowhere near as confusing or futile as the ones in Dune. If I remember correctly (and I'm probably getting movie Dune mixed up with novel Dune, so sue me) they could kill an unshielded human on touch or impact, but slow moving projectiles could move through them, as well as limbs bearing weapons, and if you used a laser against it it would explode!! To be fair to Lucas, the original trilogy did a lot to show how a spacefleet should look (even if it wasn't realistic.) Of course, space fleets in anime (eg Space Cruiser Yamato) had looked impressive for years before that. Best destruction of a planet sfx I have seen was in the film Star Trek Generations. When planets blew up in that they looked like they were made of rock, not gunpowder. Once, when I was really bored, I went to the Wikipedia entry for Star Destroyers and started to add zero's to the end of the number of crew members for those ships. Had it up to billions on board each one b4 anybody noticed. Taksraven -
