Bah, I thought it was a little bit more creative than the "Lock in 3......2........1" that others post in doomed threads. And your response to my superfluous post was superfluous as well. :P Taksraven (besides, its a boring Sunday arvo here as I wait to download the latest Dr Who)

Do we have any idea of the popularity of the Shadow Chronicles release, number of sales or anything like that. Would like to know out of interest. Taksraven

Yes, the original series was pretty dumb, but Beast Wars showed how TF could be good. Taksraven

Same thoughts here, I saw it as amazingly bad and it was annoying that a lot of people did like it. (A lot of people liked Titanic too and that was absolute shite.) I put the TF movie in the "dumb action film" genre that used to be so popular in the 1980's and like a lot of the dumb action films that were made in the 80's I suspect that its reputation as a good film will be destroyed, eventually. Since we seem to ask interesting questions here, whats a lock? Taksraven

Just to be annoying, Speed Racer was not a "considered" failure, it was a definite/absolute failure. No Hollywood spin could put a happy face on the fact that the film cost 120million and made less than 100 million. I think that Watchmen will be more of a "considered" failure, costing 120 million and making just over 172 million. But we live in a world where movies like The Dark Knight can make over a billion dollars, so its fair to say that a production would have to at least double its production costs in profit to be considered a success now. I agree about the anime-themed movies dying a death though. Look at the Evangelion live-action film, thats been on the cards for years now and still no real progress (nor is there likely to be). And that is a potential production that would be facing few (probably no) legal actions. I think that the possibility of a RT film opening a real can of worms legally means that its not likely to be made. Add to that the enormous cost of such a production as well as the potential risk, as well as the current stagnant nature of the franchise, I will go on the record and say that a RT live action film will NEVER be made.

There have been a few negative Macross threads lurking around lately so I thought I would try to start a more positive one. When did you first realise/discover what a cool show Macross is? It could have been from the start of the first episode of SDF:M, it could have occurred later. Whenever it was, let us know. I can list two defining points in my life when I realised that this show truly rocked. The first was when I was standing in a modelshop somewhere in Sydney and I saw a kit for the SDF-1 in attack mode. I had already seen a few episodes of the program and liked it but this was the first time that I found out that the SDF-1 was a transforming vessel. Don't get me wrong, I love the Valks, but the fact that the SDF itself had the ability to transform was a factor that really convinced me that the program was MUCH better than the Transformers. (Yes, I was a young teenager) It was the biggest transforming vessel I had seen in my life up until that stage and I was VERY impressed. The second defining point for the coolness of Macross was watching the first episode of Macross Plus. This demonstrated to me that the franchise could be strong and compelling even without the lead characters and many of the elements of the original series. It still stands up as one of the greatest episodes of any animated franchise. A great work, which made me a Macross fan for life. So, what do other people have to share on this topic? Taksraven

Fair enough. I guess my point would really be that sci-fi gets a rough deal across the board. Nobody in the TV industry ever takes it too seriously. (Thats why there is little cerebral sci-fi TV with cinema normally being the home for intelligent SF.) Taksraven

Thanks for that. Its a great collection of reviews/summaries. I like how with a lot of them you can tell pretty quickly if they are fans of the old Trek or newly introduced fans. (The guy who compared it to Khan was a dead giveaway, and as much as I like Star Trek II, I would NEVER bother to compare this new film to it) I hope its as good as they generally claim it is. The nightmare begins. This is the most suss part of the story. I don't believe that "HG asleep at the wheel so some Macross stuff sneaks through" story that people seem to accept. In Australia at least, this period was an anime boomtime with the release of M+ by Manga as well as a *heap* of other material. I'm not a big believer in conspiracy theories, but there was more going on here than we know about. I know that it is probably not the most legally fought over franchise ever, but Macross seems to have had more than its fair share of problems. That is just sheer cheek. How did they get away with that? Is that a "though gritted teeth" statement about releasing Frontier, or is it just a "Hey, we need lots of money" deal? Taksraven

The most surprising thing about the series was that it lasted so long. I just read that Shirley Manson appeared in it. Was she any good? I love Garbage. Taksraven

If there was a live concert who would you see? *poll*

I knew that Sheryl would be winning this one, because we are all pervy bastards. Taksraven -
I would only possibly lose interest in Macross if the franchise itself actually ended. OR, if they produced some Macross that was as bad as the Sylvester McCoy seasons of Dr Who in the 80's. But then again, if you use Gubaba's "Choose your own franchise" idea its easy to work around that. Taksraven
