The thing is, by bothering to argue with these Robotech die-hards, both here and in other forums, are we giving the whole robotech thing oxygen and fuelling the fire. (I think that Azrael was making a similar point earlier) Maybe if we just ignored them and stopped debating with them, they would have little else to talk about other than speculate about how many decades they will have to wait for some new RT. If we ignored them it would bug the crap out of them. We know we are generally correct about things so why get worked up about it? Taksraven

Technology that you have bought that went nowhere...
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Too bad about the old one. Marionettes Inc usually provides good products. Or did you make the mistake of going with Delos? (Never a good idea) Taksraven -
"Yer either with us, or with the terrorists!" No, wait. Taksraven

Come on, we've all done it at some stage I'm sure. Most tech-fanatics at some stage have purchased some piece of tech that went on to a premature demise. Maybe it was a games console? Maybe a Beta video machine? Maybe it was even more obscure than that? Maybe, just maybe, you really like the machine despite the fact that it looks like nobody else does. For me, an early example would be my Amiga 500. Now it certainly was a popular machine for quite some time and I even upgraded to a A2000 at one stage, but there was a point during the 90's when the old Amiga started to look a bit folorn. Fewer and fewer games releases and a decline in the availability of upgrades meant that it did not seem to be viable to keep the machine and it was time to cross over to the dark side and get a PC. A classic later example was my N-Gage phone. My N-Gage was a second generation one. They were trying to improve on the first one by getting rid of the "side talkin" and by making the memory-game card slot more accessible, but they made the mistake of getting rid of USB connectivity and making it a mono-sound unit instead of the stereo which the first one had. I still really liked it though and used it for a number of years. (I even had to endure the WSOD at one point, doh) Taksraven

Some stuff has been rescued from bins over the years. Some stuff has been deliberately destroyed. All of the sets and models from 2001 were destroyed on Kubricks orders (so the story goes), so when it came time to make 2010, everything had to be rebuilt from scratch just by looking at the images from the original film. The largest Enterprise D model from ST:TNG was found in a restaurant and saved from that place. (Story goes that it was auctioned in 2006 for over half a million... see here) And the legend is that this unique ship from the Space:1999 episode "The Infernal Machine" was smashed against a wall at the conclusion of the filming of the episode by the SFX director as he found the ship extremely frustrating to work with.... Not criminal negligence. It was very kind of the studio (and the director), in fact, not to chainsaw the model after production. It's not unheard of so it can be considered fortunate that this model still exists at all.... Taksraven

Ahhh yes, the great and glorious 4th Robotech War. What a moronic achievement. Taksraven

OK, sorry about that. (Yes, I did notice that story during the week) I was going to suggest that you go out and make a great film about molecular sized aliens but then I realised its already been done.... Taksraven
-
Lets be honest though, true "aliens" would not be humanoid, in fact it is unlikely that they would have any features that a human could recognise. I think that "The Masters" in the Tripods TV series were a really good attempt at an alien creature with few, if any, recognisable features (apart from "legs and arms" if you can call them that"), especially since they were achieved with a TV budget...... How far would you go for some Macross lovin'?
taksraven replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
I think you meant to say "Robotech", Roy. Taksraven -
I know what you mean. The other day at work we were comparing the original Terminator to T2. Now they are both very good films but there is something about the real grittiness of the original Terminator that makes me think in a lot of ways it is better than T2. I love to see directors forced to work with a low budget, because it often forces them to be the most inventive and creative, as well as putting more into the script and the acting to compensate for creaky SFX. The final battle scenes on Naboo in the Phantom Menace between Jar Jar and his army against the droid army looked exactly like a computer game, mainly because there was little that was "real" in the environment. I also think that if Michael Bay's budget had been slashed to a third of what he was given for the recent Transformer films he would have made better movies. Taksraven

Who is going to be the David here and really bring down Goliath?? Taksraven

WTF!! A new Battlestar Galactica film is in the works??!&
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I find its the same with a lot of shows from that era. Great at the time, but unwatchable as the years progress. I had a very similar experience with Buck Rogers. Last year I purchased season one of this show cheap and I expected that I would enjoy watching it again. I was surprised to find out that it was not watchable or enjoyable. And in a similar fashion to your original BSG experience, the best thing about the old Buck Rogers was Erin Gray. Most of the rest of it was not good, especially that padded scripts and poor acting. Its funny though, I can watch other shows from the same era and older (normally different nationalities) and enjoy them, however. Space 1999 is still fun to watch, as is Gatchaman, Star Blazers, Doctor Who, original Trek, UFO, original Gundam, etc and the list goes on. Dunno why its the case, but I have a few factors that stop series from aging well and it usually involves poor scripting and acting. I think that the "re-imagined" BSG might age better than the original series. Time will tell...... Taksraven -
Sequels that we DON'T want to see!!
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
OK, this is a book, not a film. But I am sure that most people did not want another Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, especially since it could not be written by Douglas Adams. But its happened.... http://www.keepingthedoor.com/2009/08/21/n...not-very-funny/ Taksraven -
How far would you go for some Macross lovin'?
taksraven replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
How far would I go for some Macross lovin'? I turn on my computer. Get on the internet. Look up the relevant bittorrents. Then I click download. A very expensive and tiring enterprise, being a Macross fan. Taksraven -
Most writers are hack ones, I know 'cause I'm a hack myself. Reading Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Douglas Adams had some of the funniest as well as most beautiful writing EVER for a guy who did SF. Makes me want to abandon all writing projects. Taksraven

Yes, clearly Australia is the only country in the world that uses PAL. Look at the reality of the map. There is no reason why Australia should face a massive extra cost for PAL. I cited the computer games market because it is generally one that I am more familiar with. Some people mentioned more obscure markets than that. If my example is irrelevant, whatever. I was just trying to make some useful input. Even if you think that we have cheaper prices for anime here it doesn't matter cause we still dont have a lot of stuff that is available in other countries. And that includes most (but not all) Gundam stuff that I also like to collect and have had to import. Same for the ADV release of Gatchaman. Taksraven

WTF!! A new Battlestar Galactica film is in the works??!&
taksraven replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, if we are going to talk about potential directors, I think that Paul Verhoeven would have been a fantastic choice. Personally I think that technically Titanic was OK, it was just the scriptwriter should have been shot. Taksraven -
OK then, I thought that both of my previous posts were relevant but apparently they are not. Stupid me. Q. How much is too much for Macross? A. I don't know. All I know is that I wish it was available commercially outside of Japan. Happy now? I never said that my logic was perfect and would never claim that it was. It was the logic that works for me and lets me sleep at night, if it doesn't work for other I couldn't give a crap. Both sides of this argument have their merits, I will be the first to admit that and I side with the one that I talked about. (five 'I's in one paragraph, what an egomaniac I am!) Have you been promoted to a Mod? If so, congrats Sketchley. Look, I knew that when I replied to your post that you would be all over me for it. And I was right. Sketchley, going by your tone it seems that you have a personal problem with me. Please PM me so we can work it out, cause I'm sure thats what Azrael is going to tell us to do anyway. (Just saved you a post there, Azrael) Taksraven

I'm not saying that it bothered me personally (overall I am indifferent to the band), but by listening to the Three Hours of Power on the radio the week after, they were taking calls from a lot of disgruntled fans. Just the way things are, I guess. Taksraven

Its an old argument that I have heard before, but there is a flipside to it. The best example for me personally is the computer game market. To the best of my knowledge, computer game companies and marketers have usually argued that one of the main reasons for the high price of games ($80-$100 for a new release game in Australia) is the fact that piracy is so common so therefore they have to be highly priced so they can make their money back. This reason has never rang true to me for a couple of reasons. Hypothetically, if there was some magical way to abolish privacy overnight and it completely disappeared, does everybody really believe that the price of computer games would suddenly drop as well. My logic here is that if the industry makes enough money to survive now, even with their products selling for such high prices, why would they lower prices and risk not making as much money. The other thing is that by having such high prices, I think that they are also reducing their potential market. I rarely buy computer games due to the high price and if I do buy them, it is usually older games that are marked down. BUT, I know that I would purchase more games to check out if the prices were lower, especially some of the newer games. And its not just the computer game industry that is being hurt by inflated prices... If you look at this article from the Herald-Sun..... http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,2...5006024,00.html ......it talks about how when Trent Reznor toured NIN here several years ago, he went into a CD shop and noticed that NIN new releases were on average $10 more expensive than new releases by the likes of Avril Lavigne. He later hassled some record company execs about it and the initially tried to claim that it was due to the packaging of NIN stuff that it had to be more expensive. Reznor called them on this BS and they admitted that they are aware of the fact that his band has a relatively hardcore fanbase that the companies know are more willing to fork out more money for a new NIN release. Reznor saw red at this point. In other words, since the fans liked the band so much they had to pay more. Pop music, however, remained cheap and disposable. He now actively encourages his fans to "steal" his music, but to pay for stuff from up and coming struggling artists. (There are a few performers in the music industry with this attitude) So finally bringing this back to Macross and Macross-related material, I personally believe that if there was no stealing and piracy of the material that the prices would not drop and thats due to a combination of a strong fanbase for the franchise and the greed of those putting the material out. Taksraven

The old Gerry Anderson TV series? I love it. Dunno why you are asking about it here though. Taksraven

Like most shows that I watch. Generally I will watch the torrent version and if I like it enough and get the opportunity to do so I will legally purchase it later. This is especially the case for Doctor Who. If anybody else wants to do anything else thats their own business and I don't care. Taksraven

Just out of interest, (and I know that things are really starting to drift OT here but sorry), but when has a comic character been allowed to die and stay dead. Can't remember too many instances of it. (Captain Marvel or Mar-Vell maybe) Taksraven
