The All Things Video Games Thread!
Warmaker replied to Apollo Leader's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Regarding the DC and Japanese games brought over to the US... I think that has long been a problem for any system until recently, and even then it's not that much better. I recall always being aggravated about certain Japanese games / series of games not being released here in the USA, regardless of platform, even a few years ago when things supposedly got better in this regard. -
The All Things Video Games Thread!

Ahh, all this talk of Sega. Makes me remember my days of being unhealthily devoted to my Sega consoles. I had: Master System - I still recall Outrun, Phantasy Star, and Afterburner on this little system. Genesis - Sega's Golden Era? CDX Saturn Dreamcast I was loyal until the end to Sega Regarding the CDX, there were a number of games I adored from the SegaCD format. Shining Force had a sequel in this format also, which I enjoyed. Lunar I & II and Snatcher still come readily to mind. I was hugely disappointed when Konami / Hideo Kojima didn't bother to release the sequel for Snatcher in the USA, Policenauts, despite it already having been released in Japan. As for the days of the late-Genesis, CDX, 32x, I was quite hesitant, especially with the 32x. I already spent a good amount of money on the CDX. The library I had for it was still pretty new when the 32x hit, not to mention there were a number of late-Genesis games that I still played on the CDX. The Saturn? In my barracks room, my roommate had a Playstation and I had the Saturn. They were both great systems. But really, the sheer amount of games pushed by Sony was amazing. Alot were crap, just like any system, but I think the chances of more quality games was there because of the sheer number. US releases for the Saturn were sparse. But I still recall that 2D games were the best on the Saturn. I still remember seeing reviews for Street Fighter Alpha 2, that between the Saturn and PS versions, the Saturn's was far superior. But Sony knew how to wage a console war, and boy did they win BIG against both Sega and Nintendo. -
Most of the Star Wars EU is utter crap. There are a few writers that make the books feel like an extension of the movies, but they are definitely not the norm. You have stuff that contradicts the feel and theme of the movies, which I absolutely hate. To put it simply, you're better off with the movies by themselves. Most of the EU (not just books) is trash. P.S. - Regarding Chewie's death... it was IMO, just a stupid little stunt to make something important out of a particularly stupid story arc... the Y.Vong Invasion... ho hum. Kill off a character well loved in the movies and such and throw in a bunch of hack characters. Yay.

Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone

I'm wondering how Gainax is approaching the story. A revision or retelling of the original story? But please, no more jerking off Shinji. That was bad the first time -
Training, flight time, and of course, "real world applications"

Aliens Vs. Predator 2 Script and Movie Review
Warmaker replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Easy. It grows up to be a nice little Alien-Predator that fights like a Predator and moves like an Alien. He'll be able to use weapons. He'll wipe the floor against Aliens, Predators, and any hapless Human along the way. Script finished. Where's my paycheck? -
The Indiana Jones movies hold a very dear spot in my heart. I loved them ever since I was kid. I really hope this comes off right.

Aliens Vs. Predator 2 Script and Movie Review
Warmaker replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I can't tell you how disgusted I was with Aliens 3. The beginning put me off so much but I still watched the rest (my Dad rented it). I enjoyed Alien and absolutely loved Aliens. But Aliens 3? They killed off 2 of the surviving characters from the previous movie. They kill off the girl they took tremendous risks to rescue, and they kill off Cpl Hicks, which really, really pissed me off! It's too bad Alien 3 and the remaining Alien-related, lackluster films can't be disgarded in the same way Macross II is with the Macross universe. Yeah, this includes AvP. As for AvP2 having a script... considering the last one, do they really need one? -
Finally a better edition for Blade Runner. Can't wait to get the fat edition with the bells & whistles.

I've been seeing a bunch of Ospreys in the last 2 months due to ops. When watching them fly, I suddenly thought they looked like the flying Winnebago from Spaceballs. They're like huge, flying boxes
-
It's unfortunate. Not only a lack of creativity from Lucasarts these days, but a lack of technical ability.
-
I'm 99% sure you'll never see a Tomcat in an airshow anymore. Maybe a gutted, display F-14, but not a flying one. Unless you're in Iran? Maybe Test Squadrons and such will have a few, but the parts will dwindle down. And they won't give them up for airshows or even static displays.

Just as you've repeated your statement from elsewhere, I'll repeat mine again: There's more to Star Wars than Lightsabers and the Force. The Jedi are but one aspect of Star Wars that make the franchise what it is. But Lucasarts has been heavily leaning on that single angle for years ever since Episode I came out. "Empire At War" was finally a Star Wars game that wasn't practically centered on the Force. Back onto the subject of increasingly overpowered Force abilities. Next thing you know you'll have someone sucking the life out of people on an entire planet by using the Force, killing them all. Oh wait, they did that already with Darth Nihillus in KoTOR II. Wonder what they're going to do next to surpass the ridiculousness of that.

The Force was strong in the movies. But you didn't have Jedi smashing starships (Clone Wars cartoon) and such in the movies. As for Yoda, the only bit of exception I give him was that he was a 800+ YEARS OLD Jedi Master, Grand Master of the Jedi Order. Nobody else save Sidious could possibly face against his power and ability. Not every Jedi / Sith who think's they're the s**t has such levels of power. As for believing other Jedi / Sith are all badasses? No, they weren't. What we see of the main and major Jedi / Sith characters were the cream of the crop, the best of their respective sides. Anakin, Mace, Obi-Wan, Sidious, Yoda, etc. And even then, Jedi still were massacred, i.e. Order 66, by good old fashioned betrayal, deception, and a healthy dose of blaster fire to the back... or chest. You had Jedi Council Members looking dumbounded when they were betrayed by their Clones. For all that supposed power, for all that supposed "wisdom," for all that supposed "connection with the Force" in all living things, it didn't stop the Jedi from being massacred by mere mortal Clones and Droids. Even Master Yoda couldn't see through Sidious' old fashioned deception, manipulation, treachery until it was too late, despite 800 years of living, despite centuries of being a Jedi Knight and Master, despite being Grand Master of the Order for God knows how long. As for others bringing up Star Wars Galaxies? Please. I played it. I was there when Jedi WERE powerful but very rare and very much hunted, and very capable of dying for good (i.e. Permadeath after 3 deaths). When people whined for "More Force Pow3rz!1!!" and the game went downhill FAST. The ones who were Jedi at the time didn't like what happened to their once prestigeous class. (Disclaimer: I left SWG after the "NGE Disaster" for those in the know) My gripe still stands about Star Wars games leaning towards Jedi. It happened to Star Wars Battlefront. SWBF1 was all about the regular fighting forces. It had problems, but I still had great fun. SWBF2? The inclusion of Jedi began and a really interesting set of feature removal from the original game. Star Wars Galaxies? Long ago, before Jedi-fication, we had 250k-300k subscribers, with lots of people all over the place, and Jedi were practically unseen. Today? Jedi all over the place compared to other "professions" at the time. And you'll be lucky to find more than a handful of players onscreen at the "hubs" of the game. As for someone bringing up the notion that Jedi gaming is all we're going to see for a long time? That's true. And that's unfortunate, since the Star Wars universe is very, very rich in other things. There is more to Star Wars than Lightsabers and the Force. Give me back a good, modern version of the X-Wing series of games anyday.... give me back TIE Fighter... and don't bring that Rogue Squadron / Leader trash, either. The only good thing about Force Unleashed? That it's not set in the Prequels era. Finally a bit of minor imagination from Lucasarts.

Another Jedi game. More increasingly overpowered Force abilities. /yawn

Transforming DYRL VF-1S or Jetfire from Anime Expo 2007

Ok, I demand* Semi-Nude Valk Girl pics, ASAP! * = emphasizing demand -
I love the pics with cockpits the best. As a drawer, I tended to lavish details with exposed panels, bays, open cockpits just to throw in tons of little details. The pic with Roy's VF-1S sitting in a hanger is another great one to me with all the support equipment and servicing lines.

It's just some often used lines for older American Western flicks, IIRC. Hans mentioned that in the first Die Hard, too (again, IIRC) with Americans, Cowboys, etc. -
