The Transformers Thread (licensed) Next
JB0 replied to mikeszekely's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
As I understand it, the problem isn't adhering to America's toy gun laws, it is that several states have stricter rules and adhering to all of them is a minefield. If I recall, New York in particular has some rules that are uniquely challenging to transforming robot toy guns. (This is why my PS1 copy of Time Crisis has a sticker on the box saying "not for sale in California". Came with an orange-tipped GunCon. My copy of Point Blank had a solid-orange GunCon, and no anti-California sticker.)- 16775 replies

The computer and electronics super geek thread
JB0 replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Ayup. It sucks. I'm not too bothered by it, since I don't use much from Google's store on mine, but it is a definite issue. I assume Onyx is working on a newer version, but who knows if older devices will see it or if they use it to push a hardware refresh. -

Yeah, I probably shoulda put update in quotes. They make very minor changes and call it a new model. I'l call it like the model year on cars, but they go faster than that(sometimes much faster). The older Android version is because Google stopped supporting eInk displays some time back, so the manufacturers have to do some significant coding to get new versions of Android working. It results in Android-based readers being what the smartphone market would call hopelessly obsolete. -

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
JB0 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
And in another episode or two they'll be off the rails with some insane homage to GaoGaiGar or Fate/Stay Night that leaves you thinking this can't possibly be anyone's fetish and it's all just a huge joke. To this day I have no idea. (Okay, those are both very late in the show, but... the point stands.) -

Keijo!!! was fun as hell. Even if it did give me whiplash with how rapidly it went from "earnest sports anime" to "wildly unhinged parody of sports anime". -
That IS a cool accessory. I've got the Prime 3 Samus. And while I've derived a lot of amusement from describing the morph ball as a "free second figure", it didn't come with any effect parts either. (I'd like them to do a un-varia'ed Samus. I've always been fond of the base power suit's sleeker design. )

Advanced Destroid Program (Destroid Upgrades)
JB0 replied to cheemingwan1234's topic in Movies and TV Series
Destroids seem to also be used for more-or-less police work on Earth after the war. I would assume that any community with full-size zentradi would see an advantage to get their Patlabor on. ... Though I think 7 had transforming helicopters? The M3 shows 7 having a transforming police car. -

There's always some smurfs that believe their personal tastes are universal in spite of all evidence to the contrary. I know there's people who have an "All the Primes, only the Primes" Transformers collection, which gives this a leg up regardless. And that slapping the Optimus Prime name on a random toy someone successfully got approved is a common tactic to boost sales, because a toy named Optimus Prime sells better(most jarringly with the Canon x Transformers toy, where Reflector was a repaint of a toy camera because Optimus Prime was first). Same. Cool robots are always cool. As it happens, I think Robots In Disguise 2001 Universe Optimus Prime is ugly as heck(and Hasbro's naming sense is ridiculous, but that's unrelated). But Omega Prime is a dang cool super robot. One of those places where you can tell at a glance that the same people did the Transformers and Brave Robo franchises.- 16775 replies

In fairness, Unicron was an ugly panel-sandwich mess, VSaber and Deathsaurus are almost completely absent in the US media, and Omega Prime has the name Optimus Prime on it. I'd have been surprised if this one HADN'T broken records.- 16775 replies

I feel like Kaifun's most insufferable in the post-war arc. Like, it isn't a nonsensical character development, but he becomes much more overtly dickish and less motivated by any moral stance. He needs someone to blame for the apocalypse, he was already anti-military... so let's just go all in and blame them for everything ever. ... It doesn't help that Minmay's still pining for Hikaru and Kaifun's still got a thing for her.

Even on the modern IRL internet, download and streaming services have multiple content delivery nodes. You don't connect to THE Steam and Netflix servers, you connect to your region's Steam and Netflix servers. I imagine the Galaxy Network would be similar. Every fleet and solar system likely has their own content caches precisely so no one is streaming petabit-per-second holodramas from servers on Earth. Heck, it'd make sense for some form of content caching to be an integral part of the protocol. Possibly even user-distributed(bittorrent as a core internet protocol sounds wild)

Better than waffles and no paint on the front of the wings! Man, by Transformers standards, that's a helluva jet. Fists fold away, robot torso doesn't just hang underneath...- 16775 replies

Wait... this thing has an entire shopping mall in it, and passengers are sitting in rows of seats instead of cabins? There's some serious misallocation of resources here.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
JB0 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Having read a bit of the manga... overexcited student council president is by far the best part, and her's is the story I WANT to be taking in. -
It is trending, and inaccurate. He achieved the first crash, which is an... accomplishment?... but it isn't a killscreen. (He actually missed the crash he was going for and had to shoot for another one a few levels later.) In fact, it is possible, with enough skill and luck, to keep going until the level counter passes 255 and wraps around back to zero. I think I'd call that "beating" Tetris.

Similar general shelf layout, but the stocking is more or less "a bunch of empty pegs and shelf spots punctuated by Power Rangers, DC Comics, Earthspark, or Reflections" They actually expanded the number of pegs dedicated to Reflections figures a few months back. Which, okay, it is better than empty pegs, but it is also worse than anything else.- 16775 replies

I hadn't thought of it before he said it, but sketchley makes a good point. The island is under VASTLY different geological circumstances after the fold than before. It's gonna stretch out and relax now that the Earth's gravity isn't pressing down on it, and it isn't going to be particularly stable for a while until it works out its new situation.

I was under the impression that they rapidly stripped much of the useful stuff before they left, once they realized it was gonna be a long trip in the slow lane. Regardless, even if the island wasn't stripmined, and managed to hold itself together... most of the buildings and infrastructure were not designed to accomodate deep space. They aren't airtight, and they aren't well-insulated*. Be easier to knock it all down, dig it all up, and rebuild from scratch. * Pluto's orbit is cold enough that for most of the plutonian year, the world's favorite KBO has solid nitrogen on its surface. When the local weather forecast is "frozen air", you need REALLY good insulation.
