Eventually you HAVE to stop cloning and let the genes get mixed up the way nature intended. They carried the project on untill the (likely predicted) negative side effects started showing, then cancelled it before things got worse. It served its purpose in repopulating the Earth in a fraction of the time otherwise required. I would consider it far from a disaster.
