Consoles generally appear to get a 6 month lead time where they are superior, but PCs always catch up quickly. They APPEAR to be better. But you have to remember, they're running at 640*480 at 30 Hz(technically 60 interlaced). 60Hz on the high end(Dreamcast VGA box, PS2/GameCube progressive scan). Exception: XBox can do higher resolutions. The average PC game is running more like 1024*768 at 75-100 Hz. It's got a lot more work going on even when the games look equivalent. This generation's a bit diffrent, though. It's set up to be DTV ready. All 3 systems are supporting the higher resolutions available. There's a massive hop up here. Hign-end is 1080i = 1920*1080=2,073,600 pixels. A good moderate-high PC game res is what? 1600*1200? Which = 1,920,000. Almost identical pixel-wise. However, 1080i is running at 60Hz interlaced, which is 30 full screens a second. The PC 1600*1200 is 60Hz progressive at the minimum, resulting in a doubled render job, and more likely 75 or 100Hz(60Hz looks like CRAP on a PC monitor). More likely is 720p, though. Which is 1280*720=921,600 pixels at 60Hz progressive. Console games generally LOOK flashier, but in practice they aren't. The display they use lets them get away with lower resolutions and smaller texture maps, along with such evil trickery as dithered shading and checkerboard transparency. Having said all that, let it be clarified that I'm not a PC fanboy. Games is games.

You know that part bit bothered me if valks was part of a secret project how he would play an arcade of them since when he was a kid? Sure theres proly regular aircraft simulator arcade and maybe mecha arcade games but to the macross world I doubt theres one that is both before the zentran attack. Im more inclined to think hes more of a very quick learner or very lucky, like randomly shoot into space at differnt directions but due to the sheer number of regults in the area you couldn't miss and you end up looking like an ace. Try games in general. Max was darn good at video games. Which aren't, on the face of it, that dis-similar from piloting in a warzone. You've got a joystick, some buttons, and if you don't keep track of everything going on, you die(admittedly, one death is a bit less permanent). Obviously, real-world combat is a bit more complex. More controls(unless you play a lot of mech/fighter sims), you're in a 3D space, you have inertia slinging you around, the enemy is smarter, and isn't coming in waves carefully constructed to give you a challenge but still be killable. But the same skills that serve a gamer are still largely the same ones a combat pilot needs. He's got good hand-eye coordination, fast reflexes, good aim, and can keep an eye on his sensors as well as the guy he's trying to line up a shot on. I'm just saying, not having a VF simulator doesn't hurt as much as it seems. Most games develop the kinds of skills a pilot needs. Tangentally related: a recent scientific study showed that first-person shooter players are better drivers. Pfft. Millia CHOSE Max as her nemesis. She kicked back and waited for someone to distinguish themselves. And the great Focker was on the battlefield, but was passed up for unassuming Max. She was just shocked that her newfound nemesis COULD hit her. Not scared. Max was her equal, maybe even better. She was prepared for something that took a little longer to gun down, not something that presented a credible threat. I thought the city was in the "chest" area. I got the impression it had quick access to both the Daedalus and Prometheus, which means it has to be between the shoulders. Anyways, Max was ordered to chase her out because he was the only one inside at the time. If I recall the sequence of events correctly... Focker orders Max out of the battle because it looks like Max, not the Macross, is the enemy target(which he was, once his skills were identified). Max heads into an open hatch that starts to close behind him. Millia ducks in the hatch at the last instant to continue the pursuit of her quarry. The duel/courtship(talk about a screwed-up relationship) continues in the city.

They learned their lesson with the PS1 and PS2. They can put fecal matter in a box, and marketing can sell it. And lens cover? I've never seen a drive in the history of the universe that had one. Sony just uses lasers that drift out of calibration easily, and a plastic drive mech that wears down fast.

A. The MSX games used a diffrent chip. B. CV3 didn't get the japanese chip not because of cost, but because NOA made licensees use Nintendo-brand mappers instead of their own custom ones. This policy causes a lot of changes, actually. Like the leaves in Contra level 1 sway in the japanese version, but not the US one.

In the US only as I know. I know if nothing else, Square was abused in Japan. They were routinely shoved aside to make room for Enix. Square wants to release FF2 and 3? Sorry, no license. Enix doesn't gie a crap about Dragon Quest in the US? Oh that's okay, Nintendo has their own translation team on standby Square needs a larger ROM pack for the next FF? Tough cookies, we're waiting for Enix to make a big enough game to premiere it. And in a rare DOUBLE-BACKSTAB... What's that Square? You've got a 99% finished game for Sony's CD-ROM expansion, and are all ready for the launch? Well gee, it's too bad we just backed out of the agreement with Sony the day before we were going to show it off to the world. We're gonna sign a license with Phillips now. And back out of that one too. Good luck shoe-horning Secret of Mana into a ROM cartridge so you can recoup your development costs, by the way. And the truth is, Nintendo's famed grudge against Square for ditching them for Sony wasn't ABOUT Square leaving. When Square left, Nintendo's president shrugged his shoulders and said "Meh. Who cares?" So Square walked over to Enix and gave them an extended sales pitch about how awesome Sony and the PlayStation were. So Enix left Nintendo. THEN Nintendo's president got mad at Square(and sat there denying them GBA dev kits when Square expressed interest in it).

With any luck, they'll just set it up so you can hook up you OWN Hard Drive (I seem to recall that if you formatted a certain toshiba hard drive or something, you could mount it in your PS2 much like the hard drive that was released for it) Actually, any IDE hard drive will work. You just need the system to set it up for PS2 games to recognize. In Japan more stuff made use of it, because it was out almost immediatly. And there's always HDLoader...

Abusing in what way? From what I've heard, it was they were charging high license rates per cartridge, plus charging for what was made, not just what sold in stores. So the developers ate most of the dept. They also tended to make them sign somewhat abusive contracts stating that either the developer would only code for Nintendo systems or that specific games could only appear on Nintendo systems, depending on the time period and the company. That's why, for example, the Genesis has "Street Fighter 2 Super Championship Edition" instead of "Street Fighter 2 Turbo." Nintendo made Capcom sign a contract saying that "Street Fighter 2 Turbo" wouldn't be made for the Genesis. And they restricted game releases, at least in the NES days. They wouldn't license more than a certain # of games in a given time period. I don't know why, but they did(that's why Tengen started releasing unlicensed games, because Nintendo denied them several licenses for games that their licensors acknowledged were darn good). And the initial releases were often intentionally underprinted. It made the NES look more popular, because the games were always sold out at launch. For the developers, it sucked because it cut into their profits.

Mff... Can't find the thread. This is from memory, and not guaranteed 100% accurate. Someone had someone leaving stuff on a board member's porch around Christmas. He was creeped out. Agent ONE suggested that once the gift-giver's identity was known, he should start masturbating onto the person's doorknob, leaving his own kind of present behind. ... Needless to say, it's not something anyone forgot.

Not really. The N64 was late. By the time it hit shelves, the battle was over, and PS1 had soundly defeated the Saturn in America. In Japan, the N64 had very little of interest at launch, leading to poor sales. This discouraged japanese developers from adopting it, leading to a dearth of software in the US(despite somewhat better sales). Sony makes a good profit off software licenses too. Check the sales #s. PS2 games still move at a fairly brisk rate. True but then FF7 will be then on N64 not PS if it was a CD system. Well at least The Saturn was No.2 in Japan and the Far East cuz of its 2D and fighting games. *shakes head* If the N64 hadn't come late AND Nintendo hadn't ritually abused Square for years, MAYBE. CD didn't factor into it as much as people make it out. The 3rd parties left Nintendo because A. the SNES couldn't compete against the PS and Saturn. B. Nintendo had a proud tradition of abusing all but a select few licensees.

Now I've got a question for you JBO and others... admittedly I'm not an expert in these matters (I just read this stuff at my leasure, usually from business mags when I come across them), but why is that so? Is it because data size has expanded beyond the capabilities of Processors to use that information? Like the way I see it, is there processor and graphics chips are too limited in their capacity to render things on screen so there is no need for so much memory? If that is the case, then the DVD format may become quickly outmoded on the PS3 and Xbox because it is better able to take advantage of the capabilities available. The big thing I see is... the higher resolution digital TVs are capable of will necessitate higher-poly models and more detailed texture maps. The limitations of NTSC let them get away with relatively low-detail scenes. That era is over. And while many PC games(which have been dealing with sharper, higher-resolution displays for years) still come on single CDs, the data is all heavily compressed, necessitating a gig or 3 of hard-drive space to decompress things to. But... not to the 8.5 gig max of dual-layer DVD.
