  1. This seems to largely be an unavoidable side effect of the cover plates on top of the lion legs. To get the cylindrical look of the cartoon, the plates would have to cut through the space where the legs exist. And to fully enclose the legs, the top of the lion has to extend out farther than usual to create a "fender". It still HAS curves, but they aren't nearly as pronounced, and the plates aren't helping matters. It would do a lot if the green plates were styled appreciably different to the red plates.
  2. Same. But I love their look. In general, I really want toys that look like the originals but bend like the new ones.
  3. You can't deny that's a sexy beastbot.
  4. With the way they use missiles in Macross? Ammo. Lots of ammo.
  5. Jesus! Can they really show that kind of explicit content on TV in Japan?
  6. Toy accuracy gang unite! Matchbox/Popy style or bust!
  7. Question : do zentradi ships have anything analogous to catapults, or do their mechs just burn reaction mass to get moving towards their targets? Probably should, but that's a really long drive. And what if the next galaxy's got their own terminally-irresponsible previous residents? Or worse, teminally-irresponsible CURRENT residents!
  8. It is also worth noting that the ship was not originally an aircraft carrier. There's a reason a full third of its length is seemingly dedicated to a giant eff-off cannon.
  9. Negative. It was just a small class of ship. We as viewers know with certainty that the crew were giants from the massive airlock when Hikaru and Minmay were trapped in the ship's unremodelled innards. Focker's statements in the first battle that he knew the aliens were giants, but not that they were human, implies this as well, since all humanity's knowledge of extraterrestrial life came from the ASS-1. It therefore had to contain evidence of giants, such as oversized doors and chairs and equipment. (It actually seems unlikely they wouldn't know the aliens were human, but this information was likely only shared at the highest levels. )
  10. I'm no stranger to off-topic. It just threw me, that's all.
  11. There are definitely some visible similarities, but it could easily be parallel evolution rather than evidence of relation. Or, in light of current continuity, they could both be based on the same form of vajra. But that's just speculation.
  12. Gerbils and squirrels? My dog's gonna grand cannon this mess if you ain't careful.
  13. It could easily be that the protoculture initially thought that zentradi infantry was a good idea and changed their minds in favor of all-mechanized after the size decision was "set in stone".
  14. In fairness, I'd put less weight on the YF-29 part of that equation and more on the Max part. He could outfly them in a literal cardboard box.
  15. I like the way you think!
  16. Eden 3: Eden 1, But Less Ragweed.
  17. Dear Microsoft: Excellent. Now remake Rock&Roll Racing. You can afford to license the music.
  18. And then a toy-style chest plate! Seriously, the chest plate is the most jarring part to me. But that's also a harder part to swap without explicitly considering partswapping in the design.
  19. Given Hasbro's focus on price, I'd expect they would want a license to make their own VF-1. Which I'd be fine with, as long as they didn't try to tech up the skin with widgets like they did with Siege. I think they'd have to go through Harmony Gold. Far as I know, HG still has exclusive SDFM and DYRL merchandising rights outside Japan. This DEFINITELY won't sit well with Takara, no matter who they get the license from. Generations Jetfire is probably the closest we'll ever get. Le sigh.
  20. I'm really glad there's a toon-accurate Skyfire toy out there. Always thought Skyfire looked really cool. I'd also really like to see a modern VF-1 toy painted in Jetfire colors released in the crossover line, but there's pretty much zero chance of that.
  21. Copyright is not as broad as all that. They can't use the specific molds of those toys without a license. Nothing stops them from making their own similar toy, as long as it isn't a direct 1:1 copy. The liberties taken with Roadbuster and Whirl were in the name of making them more resemble fictional depictions of the original toys. Were the original toy concepts anywhere close to as legally protected as you allege, the modern versions would not be changed enough to avoid issue. Classics Jetfire is a special case for several reasons. The Classics line was very much about not being slavishly accurate to the toon or original toy, but creating updated and modernized versions of the concepts. For a more slavish homage, they had the GI Joe Skystriker remold. (Harmony Gold DID file suit over that one, which isn't a surprise but also isn't strong evidence of anything.) The VF-1 design might be trademarked, which would gain it a much stronger level of legal protection. But it is the only one of the above designs that would have an active trademark(and frankly, the only one that would've ever been trademarked in the first place). Coincidentally, the VF-1 is also the only one that has any relevance to Bandai today. Odds they remember owning the Deluxe Insecticon molds are slim. Odds that they would notice a vigorous homage are even slimmer. Odds they could do anything about it if they did notice are very close to zero. ... And odds that they WOULD do anything about it if Hasbro steamed ahead without them are exactly zero. I'd actually forgotten until I was poking around just now, but they HAVE remade one of the deluxe insecticons twice(the first time as a ridiculous targetmaster partner, the second time as a surprisingly effective repaint of Shrapnel). http://tfu.info/1985/Decepticon/ChopShop/chopshop.htm http://tfu.info/2013/Decepticon/GenLegChopShop/chopshop.htm http://tfu.info/2016/Decepticon/CWChopShop/chopshop.htm
  22. I mean, they've made updated Jetfire, Whirl, and Roadbuster before. Bandai owning the original molds doesn't stop them.
