Transformers Super Thread 4: The Return
JB0 replied to Dangard Ace's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I'm sure you actually did need the flash(or a tripod and a LONG shutter time). I'm equally sure the camera guessed wrong on what the subject was and fired the flash too strongly/opened the aperture too wide/exposed the frame for too long. It was probably trying to make the gray background lighter, if I had to guess. If there's an exposure compensation option, try lowering it a little(I assume it's digital, so no wasted film if you do shots at -1 and -2 both). My Kodak will let you do exposure compensation, and it's got jack squat in the way of controls. -
Somethin' strange... in the neighborhood. Who ya gonna call? GUNBUSTER!

The first two panels are also blatantly overexposed, which isn't helping matters. It's amazing how mind-numbingly stupid cameras can be sometimes. -
Why macross fans thinks Macross 2 is worse than Macross 7?
JB0 replied to kamikaze_kamujin's topic in Movies and TV Series
You forgot the part where it turned out Hikaru was a clone of Roy, who was a clone of an alien. Or Roy was an alien and Hikaru was injected with alien cells. Or Max was the clone, and Hikaru just got brainwashed into thinking he was actually Max. It's really not very clear. -

You'd think, but... I've got a US-release solid-orange GunCon that the paint scrapes off with a fingernail. -

HAHAHA! That's the spirit! *grabs the Dremel, attaches "de-oranger" tool* -
For the Super CD-ROM2 expansion, actually. (Also compatible is CD-ROM with Super System 2 card, Duo system, and CD-ROM with Arcade Card Pro. Yes, the PCEngine is a nightmare).

That suitcase uses TARDIS technology, doesn't it?

But the superposables were HG-licensed. As far as Macross/Robotech-related merchandise, HG has the final call on what Toynami does and doesn't do. I doubt they'd go "Yeah, we have no clue if we actually own that, but go ahead and do the release with our name on it." I don't recall the specifics of the legal mess involved in that one, though.
-
They sold a trio of DYRL superposables. I gather they didn't sell well. I think it was probably to bolster their claims of DYRL ownership.

Pretty much, as that company would have an unchallenged right. CHE filed for bankruptcy in 1991. They never came out of it, and no longer exist. I can't find info for BF&V, but I think they're dead too. This is part of the problem. You also lack imagination. There's a lot of lost contracts, verbal contracts, SEKRIT FILEZ!111*, and so forth. And then there's mergers, sales, buyouts... No one's sure who owns what anymore. Everyone's bought different parts of the dead companies, and multiple companies THINK they got the DYRL rights. If I recall, the big issue is that 3 different companies think they bought CHE's license. It's actually possible ALL the licenses expired years ago and no one knows it(or are at least pretending to not know). *The main license in this thread has never been seen by anyone in recent history. If I recall, the only people they've harassed that have ever actually seen it were FASA, and they were sworn to secrecy. HG expects everyone to just trust them, because obviously they're the guardians of truth and justice in the world, and if you disagree with them you're an evil lying thief. No. Short version: Tokyopop got a license from Big West for it. Tokyopop got a license from Harmony Gold for it, to avoid fighting with HG over royalties. BW said "Waitwaitwait... these guys are crazy, they don't own this. You can't release this if you're gonna put a HG sticker on it." and pulled the license.** Tokyopop ceased to have a manga to distribute, and canceled the release. ** At the time, BW was suing Tatsunoko over who owned the franchise. They REALLY didn't want Trash being released with a Tatsunoko licensee's label on it. Especially since HG presents Macross as being copyright Tatsunoko. Having Macross products showing up with Tatsunoko copyrights would hurt their stance greatly.

Plus was in pretty much constant release ever since, though. The VHS was still in print during the DVD release, and that factored into things. As I understand things, HG tried to sue over the + DVDs and got slapped because of the current VHS run. DYRL's been out of print for over a decade. If it comes back into print, HG will throw a hissy-fit. And with it out of print for so long, there's a bit more footing for them, though any competent lawyer should be able to point to the Super Space Fortress and Clash releases to make HG's alleged ownership of the franchise moot. If you ignore it at one point, you lose the right to attack it again later. But trademark issues could complicate things. I'm not entirely clear on how trademark works, but HG has trademarked several titles, and I think Do You Remember Love is among them. So if nothing else, a new title would have to be generated. Bingo. As I understand it, they had to give the remaster back to HG too. And HG proceeded to give it to ADV after the Animeigo license expired. Both. I was thinking mainly US companies, but there's a possibility that Tatsunoko may hold a stake in the international rights. And one company did a Japanese release of the English dub, so they might want a cut of things too. Like I said, it's a big standoff. Everyone and Harmony Gold thinks they own it, and they're all waiting for someone to flinch so they can shoot.

Built by automated factories. Of course, the factories were in pretty bad shape as well, but... Britai did too. Also note that Millia was well-known among the males of the fleet. What's ALSO notable is that all the illustrated cross-gender communication was via radio or TV. It's possible that the restrictions only covered direct face-to-face communication, or that they were relaxed for higher-ranking zentradi.

Plus and 2 got out on DVD before HG "realized" they had exclusive rights to the franchise. DYRL's been off the market for a long time, and that gives HG a bit of leverage on a new window. Macross TV's US release is actually licensed FROM HG, and the source video used was HG's copy(given the current situation, Big West probably wouldn't have been very accommodating). So it's immune to legal bickering. And as I said, not counting HG, there's several companies that think they own a piece of DYRL. So whoever releases is guaranteed legal hassle, even if HG ignores things. Plus and 2 have much "cleaner" licenses. I'm not entirely clear on how the trademark issue affects things.
-
Things change. The original releasers of DYRL folded. There's something like 4 companies that think they own the rights to a US release, and everyone's waiting for someone else to show their hand. And HG probably WILL sue. If the defense lawyers are competent, it'll get thrown out fast, but they'll probably sue anyways. If I recall, I think they tried to trademark DYRL's title recently too. That makes things uglier. Macross 7 has HG and Japanese-side issues. The audio is licensed separately, and it's very expensive.

They had them employed in the manufacturing sector. You kinda NEED tools to do manufacturing work. Besides, they wanted to teach them to be people, not to make them slave warriors for a neo-protoculture empire.

Apparently not, since any lines already in the movie weren't eligible for the contest. I still wanted "Transform and roll out" to win, though. It's apparent lack of inclusion saddens me. Haw. -
They had no idea a coherent continuity would be needed many years later, either. Once they needed a coherent continuity, it made it very easy to write all the discrepancies off by labeling DYRL as a movie created within the Macross franchise. The cockpits are markedly different. That's the main reason for the block 6/VF-1X/whatever designation.

Were there any original submissions in the first place? He's jsut a believer in the old saying "fight fire with fire." -

I tried that mode once. Just to see what it looked like. Firejettrucks are silly. Yah, it's a nice head... once you flip the mouthplate up. -

Heyheyhey! The movie producers aren't total morons! http://www.transformersmovie.com/primespeaks/ Prime's contest line for the movie is... "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings." They even proofread it. -
Strongly implied, I believe. The show doesn't explicitly state anything other than the Varuta ships are based on human designs, and that the Varuta captured a human fleet. But some of the design changes strongly imply a new vehicle, as does the large number of fighters they can field(most of the original fleet's ships should have been destroyed in the take over, if the # of pretty explosions in the Mac7 fleet was any indicator.

Like I said... if you can't afford the audio, why bother? Geez... I had ONE spur issue, and nothing else. And that was actually sticking out in a not-visible location(which also made it a pain to trim out, but...). Was only an issue at all because it interfered with a chest panel hinge. Sorry to hear your's was in such bad shape. -
Why macross fans thinks Macross 2 is worse than Macross 7?
JB0 replied to kamikaze_kamujin's topic in Movies and TV Series
I think they did some of that in the original series. Hikaru seemed to favor fighter mode. ... I COULD point to the VF-1D chaos, but given he had appreciable plane experience and not even basic robot training, it's not really valid. But even after he got some training, his stunt pilot experience gave him a good deal more plane experience than anything else. -
The post-war portion of the series also shows Zentradi employed in the manufacture of technology.
