High Definition Media & Technology Thread
JB0 replied to JsARCLIGHT's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
My favorite is"gold-plated connectors for superior signal quality" on OPTICAL audio cables. ... And Monster's short-lived PS2 controller extension cord that promised to get the signals from the gamepad to the console faster so that your games would be more responsive. But that's a bit outside the bounds of this thread. -
Probably. That seems to be how these things usually work, regardless of company. Can't stop us from dreaming.
-
And all that is very interesting, but largely irrelevant to a wish fueled by the recent involvement of the design team on the website news posts, an area they have not traditionally had great input on.

In fact, there's a large enough volume of air that it should have a natural rain cycle. NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building is a large enough room to experience natural rain, and a colony ship is, obviously, MUCH larger.

Federation Vs Klingon/Romulans & Other
JB0 replied to Roy Focker's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
*laughs* Vulcans don't let logic guide their decisions. They use it to JUSTIFY their decisions, which are guided by carefully hidden emotions. Put a bunch of vulcans in a room with a problem, you'll get a bunch of vulcans patiently explaining to each other why their solution is the only logical course of action and their respected comrades are misguided and/or illogical. Sign me up for the romulans. I always thought they always needed more screen time in the later shows. -
Hot. That was the first Dresden book I read.

One of the secret ships in Tyrian(type NORTSHIPZ on the titlescreen) had a secondary special weapon(tap the button to change your rear-fire mode to select it) called "SDF Main Gun" and it was a big fat laser of omnipotence. Arguably it was a Robotech reference, but...

In Soviet Russia, Macross watches YOU!

That's pretty nifty. I hope they have a designer provide brief explanations to the photo and documentation teams from now on too. Because really, that stuff is insane.
-
What he said. Macross doesn't have the monopoly on forward-swept wings.

Well, yeah... it's a gaming blog. Rationality is NOT their standard business.

At least it was a fresh transfer, right? They didn't just upsample the old DVD transfer? But yeah... I was rather disappointed in the DVD. Go to all the effort to create a 6-channel soundtrack out of the stereo, and totally ignore the low film quality. It needed a video remaster more than a surround soundtrack. I guess it's the same on HD, just higher-res.

Ummm... the PS2 Robotech games aren't americanized versions of the J PS2 game. In fact, they predate the J game, were developed by a totally different company, and one of them is MOSPEADA-based. Japan has it's games, we have ours, and never the two shall meet. Except in niche-market import stores on both sides of the pacific. As far as blasphemy goes... The first Robotech game is pretty good, despite it's extremely low flight ceiling. IMO. I never played the second.

Ya know, I STILL haven't played that... *goes to download now*

Well, crap... I was hoping I'd found a way to at least slow the plague, but... back to square one.

Fortunately, this is the GAMECUBE we're talking about here. If anything can save us from Mass Addict, it's the 'Cube... Or possibly the Dreamcast.

High Definition Media & Technology Thread

I didn't say it did. I was just pointing out that the DVD Forum was acting like retarded monkeys instead of launching a serious offensive. I doubt they would've done it, for precisely the reason you mention. Everything I've seen says more layers was only intended for HD-DVD-ROM. -
I forgot about this in-joke in Flashback 20112

I hereby place a request for a BetaRay release of Flashback 2012, so that the masses can see that in motion. -

That's because they were handled in a retarded manner. Rather than filing them in the HD-DVD section, and putting a DVD-only release in the DVD section, they should've REPLACED the DVD release with the HD/DVD combo disk. Then come back in a year and gone "Hey don't you think it's time you bought an HD-DVD player for all those HD-DVDs you bought?" I don't believe triple-layer was ever intended for movie usage. And the problem with BR's profiles is two-fold. A. it punishes early adopters. The people that MADE the format a success are getting screwed by the fact that they can't use the special features of their disks. In the case of 1.0 adopters, they essentially can't use ANY special features(many early releases are basically featureless due to the limitations of 1.0). B. It's a blatant example of abusing the customer for marketing purposes. They forced an incomplete standard on unprepared disk presses with broken matering software out the door just so HD-DVD wouldn't be alone in the marketplace. If this war had been based solely on launches, HD-DVD would've beaten BluRay so hard that all the BR disks physically shattered. Or had the DVD Forum just adopted BluRay instead of telling Sony to STFU, and then forcing HD-DVD to be adopted. Seriously, they brought HD-DVD to a vote FOUR times. It was rejected three times, and they had to change the rules for the fourth vote to get the standard adopted. -
Neat little find: Super Condor in Mospeada
JB0 replied to 1st Border Red Devil's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
IMO, the "nose" cockpit implies it transforms. If it were non-transformable, I'd expect a robot mode... well, more like the Legioss has, really. But the existence of wings on the Condor does a lot more than just IMPLY that it transforms. No designer of any repute would put wings on the back of a mech that can't use them in some capacity. It HAS to have some sort of air mode, if only a GERWALK equivalent. ... Of course, they DID claim the Legioss was a valid aircraft, so... maybe they aren't designers of repute. And the Super Condor apparently is a condor with a booster clipped over the back... could be something like Macross' GBP armor. Improves performance in a specific mode at the cost of transformation. -
My experience was that adjusting the display settings made a HUGE difference. Turning the brightness down helps with the 50Hz flicker(the system's achille's heel, if we ignore the marketing difficulties), and the "depth" control on games that offered it(not coincidentally, this was mostly games with a deep playfield) was a VERY personal setting. Reliable blue LEDs became affordable the year after the VB's stillbirth. Big whoops there. The VB exists in an interesting hybrid. Nintendo was pushing it as a portable for some reason, and it kicks the GameBoy's ass. But, well, it's not portable. Now, if you're comparing it to the SNES, Genesis, and 32x... it's more arguable. It's higher-resolution than the SNES and Genesis, but lower-color(32 shardes of red VS hundreds of distinct colors). But none of them have 3D graphics.

Neat little find: Super Condor in Mospeada
JB0 replied to 1st Border Red Devil's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The entire VF series is composed of completely impractical variable vehicles. Poorly designed is a matter of opinion. I was being sincere, if over-the-top, in my appreciation of them. I DO think the Super Condor is one ugly mofo, and in desperate need of a REAL transformation, but... it's still neat. -

Where would we be without completely impractical, poorly-designed, variable vehicles? I think they're an established necessity for life. Food, shelter, mecha, and clothing. -

The VF-1R isn't even the animation error. The head is an ugly hexagonal mess instead of the broken 1A head from the animation error. Not that I'm a fan of the 1A head, but the "official" 1R head is just a disaster(Actually, it's an attempt to steal the VF-11 head without getting sued, but that's neither here nor there. Besides, they screwed the 11 head up pretty badly so it's STILL a disaster). ... At least they haven't adopted the twisted wrecks from episodes like Virgin Road(I WANT to like this episode. I really do.). Interestingly, Real Macross has adapted that error too. Though they haven't canonized it on the VF-1, the concept got rolled forward... to the future! http://www.new-un-spacy.com/macross7/vf-19s.htm That head layout look familiar? (Woulda been hilarious if they'd done it to a VF-11 head too)
