  1. In all honesty, I think Dr. Chiba's work IS a bit like midichlorians, only in reverse. They had a good solid argument(when exposed to culture, people raised as machines start acting like people instead of machines), and converted it to an ill-defined "force" of some sort. I would be much happier with Macross 7 if Dr. Chiba wasn't there at all, or if the sound boosters had no visible effect(leaving room for doubt that they actually did anything at all). You make good counterpoints, but I still hate the idea of taking the concept of culture shock and making it a quantifiable energy. Heck, I'd even be happy if they HAD sound energy but didn't try to draw a connection between it and what happened in SDFM. But the entire PREMISE of Dr. Chiba's research is that Minmay was uniquely special, her singing, specifically, was pivotal to the entire war, and someone ought to figure out why. And since his research produces visible results... well, it stands to reason that his foundation hypothesis was RIGHT. Oh, I have gripes with Frontier, as well. Don't think I blame Mac7 solely for all the franchise's missteps. I won't even claim that SDF is perfect. And certainly, I am probably guilty of grossly oversimplifying things in my criticism. I do still see sound energy as akin to magic, though. I honestly don't remember anything overtly magical in DYRL aside from Misa being able to read alien song lyrics at first glance. Though I find it to be incomplete at best and view it more as gorgeous eyecandy than an example of masterful and compelling writing(speaking of flame bait...). Again, I'm not really a hardcore Mac7 hater. I think it has it's good points, and don't regret watching it. And Dynamite 7 is pure awesome. I even actually like Basara(in spite of my argument that he was a lousy choice for main character). But Dr. Chiba is my arch-nemesis of the week, and he shall have no Quarter!
  2. It might've been hinted at, yes. I love him EXCEPT for his ridiculous boobage. Wish he'd tone it down just a tad. Because I would seriously love that statue if the chest area was just a TINY bit smaller. As-is, they're a little distracting, and not in a good way. But he's apparently making a decent living by making what he loves, so more power to him.
  3. But that's five years away! How will will pass the time?
  4. Except that in Macross 7, it's not love and culture that saves the day. It's "anima spiritia." Sound energy. Magic. And that's really my biggest gripe with it, is it had a ripple effect that redefined everything. Sudden;y Minmay isn't just a girl who was in the right place at the right time anymore. She's a high-level anima spiritia with wildly high sound energy. The zentradi weren't going into culture shock, they were brainwashed by the power of her song. If Basara'd been there, one song is all it would've taken to convert the entire fleet. No, really. Watch Fleet of the Strongest Women. It's hilarious, and I love it, but... it's just plain WRONG in the context of the franchise as a whole. I'm far from the most vocal Macross 7 detractor. I think it's a fun show at times, and mostly suffers from being too long for the amount of content they have and focusing on the wrong character quite a bit. But... I can't forgive Dr. Chiba, and most of all I can't forgive him for being RIGHT. Anyways... yeah, it's definitely the mold-breaker. Thankfully, they managed to fix the mold back up a bit later.
  5. Here's what they need to do. They need some NAME recognition on this kickstarter. Their staff simply isn't pulling their weight as is. I propose they have some of their employees get legal name changes so they can advertise it as "Robotech Academy: by James Cameron and Steven Spielberg" Alternatively, find some guys off the street with suspiciiously familiar names.
  6. Personally, I think a sequel needs to bring something new to the table. Otherwise, what's the point? It's a big universe, there's a lot more to see. While I dislike Macross 7's take on things, I appreciate it for what it wasn't. It would've been so easy to just say "let's do SDF Macross all over again" and made a show with no personality of it's own, but they decided to take the express train to Crazyville, population: Basara instead. And then when they decided to do a direct sequel to Macross 7, they decided to shake things up anyways, and Dynamite 7 spent most of it's time far far away from the fleet that had set the stage for the entire TV series dealing with more "down to Earth" problems. Of course, even DYRL chose to portray a MUCH different story than what came before, and it was allegedly remaking the TV series.
  7. That Sinon statue is badass. I want it so much.
  8. You know, I was gonna make a sarcastic comment about you guys not having the heart to reach into your wallets and help grant Carl's dying wish. But then I decided that was probably beyond the bounds of good taste, even in context. Then the last update happened and HG asked us all to have the heart to reach into our wallets and grant Carl's dying wish. They just keeps digging that hole a little deeper, don't they?
  9. Quoted for truth, as they say.
  10. If a kickstarter doesn't make it's target, no one gets charged anything.
  11. They should just ship an empty box and claim it's a rare thermoptic camoflauge variant.
  12. The bridge bunnies were just touched by the protoculture. Nothin' weird about that. Be weirder if she had normal eyes, really.
  13. Yes. And that the termites you found later weren't their fault.
  14. Well, again, the big difference is that (most) demos were meant to be shared. It's fundamentally impossible to pass a beta key around.
  15. To be fair, how many of us are kicking in five grand to get this made? It IS our fault!
  16. I'd be a lot less disgusted by how they keep harping about Macek in their sales pitch. But I still wouldn't throw good money at the people who brought you Shadow Chronicles.
  17. He's the only logical choice to lead the Decepticons, after all.
  18. I wish I could chip in one single cent. Just to cost them the processing fees.
  19. Given they were working with foreign code for a foreign computer system, with no documentation or source(much less COMMENTED AND ORGANIZED source)... it's not hard to imagine they overlooked something. I'd wager much of the technology found in the ASS-1 was still a bundle of mysteries and excitement and "hey, is it going to kill us all if I flip this switch? LET'S FIND OUT!" moments. Now, if they DID have a full understanding of the ship's systems, it would be a pretty good idea to rip the original computer out and replace it with something wrought by human hands. But it's not really a good idea to do that when you aren't even sure what the drivers for your hardware LOOK LIKE, much less how to write your own. I think it's safe to say that drivers for the grand cannon are PROBABLY not compatible with the Macross's bow gun. Personally, with something that hot, I wouldn't even START stripping it down until I had it fully reverse-engineered. All other things being equal, I wouldn't want to fly it at all if I could help it. But of course, they felt a pressing need to get SOMETHING into space to make it look to the aliens like we weren't a bunch of backwater yokels puttering around on CHEMICALLY-FUELED ROCKETS to leave our planet and THROWING CHUNKS OF LEAD at each other in a fight. Yup. And when said guy's goal appears to be "I'mma make me a robot girlfriend, program her with brain scans from some random lady I conned into running concerts from behind the scenes like the Wizard of Oz, and then see what that bot does when I plug her into the central servers of the entire terrestrial defense network, you know, for the lulz", the outcome's going to be somewhat unpredictable, to put it mildly. ... Seriously, who approved wiring Sharon Apple directly into the Macross?
  20. Then you have more respect for the man than Harmony Gold does. They're just throwing his name about wildly because he isn't around to stop them anymore
  21. I thought the primary utility of Rowboat-tech threads was the comedy value. It's the best medicine, after all.
  22. Yup. And really, this doesn't even look that good. It's almost like they bought some stickers out of a gumball machine and slapped them on the system.
