Transformers: Age of Extinction - in theaters June 27, 2014
JB0 replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Having been given the BetaRay for my birthday, I am actually watching the movie right now. Taking regular breaks to protect my intellect. I like how they just say they're in Texas and show a pan across a cornfield, as if all of Texas looks like Smallville, Kansas(and I'm just left going "that is WAY too green."). In their defense, Paris, Texas IS in one of the few counties that actually grows corn(poser Texans, livin' against a river like they need water to live or somethin'), but it took them an hour to actually say where the movie was happening, so... I think that balances out. The pacing of the CIA raid on the farmhouse and subsequent escape sequence was terrible, and like everything else, it was largely Lucas's fault. Bad enough he nearly gets everyone killed, he has to keep interjecting one-liners through the entire scene until he gets blown up/incinerated/petrified/what do those bombs even DO? I do like Crazy Prime, though. It's a shame he's in such bad movies. Edit: Lord, the Micheal Bay pacing is strong in this one. It's an entire movie focused on human drama followed by an entire movie of robots blowing things up.- 950 replies

That was apparently the working theory, that the flightsuit and helmet were supposed to be airtight once he wrapped a scarf around his neck(?). That's why the tear from the tuna teeth removes any chance of him holding his breath to go look for help like they'd planned initially, he's apparently not dumb enough to leap into a hard vacuum without protection. I'm just going to assume what I thought was a scarf is actually some form of adhesive tape, because the whole stunt makes a degree of sense that way. Enough sense for me to believe a teenager came up with a plan like that.

Macross Zero and ancient aliens/in search of aliens...
JB0 replied to McFly!!'s topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Ah. Well, at least I got an excuse to say "homo erectus" out of it. And yeah, there's a LOT of "alien intervention" sci-fi built around that missing link argument. Lot of good sci-fi, even.- 25 replies

Macross Zero and ancient aliens/in search of aliens...
JB0 replied to McFly!!'s topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Actually, modern understanding of the species lineage says neanderthal is not a predecessor of homo sapiens. They are a homo branch that forked off some time after homo erectus, and evolved independently of, and concurrently with, homo sapiens.- 25 replies

I've honestly never seen anyone else on the pylon. Though I've been known to send my character out to the end of it and have her sit down and just enjoy the view while I do something else. Takes a bit of fidgeting to get her sitting ON the pylon instead of with her butt on the pylon and her arms and legs propped against empty space. ... Look, we already established I do dumb things for the sake of appearances. Just looks like it's the kind of place my crazy huntress would choose to kick back and relax. Like the sci-fi future version of a sturdy tree on the side of a mountain. And so, I wind up resting on a landing pylon for a bit every now and again, then wiggle the camera to get a good view of the city below and mountains beyond.

And I just witnessed one perfect moment of Destiny. Human warlock standing by the fence in the Tower, dancing. Exo titan one-upping him by standing ON the fence, dancing. Awoken hunter one-upping THAT guy by leaping over the fence to stand on the landing pylons over the chasm. Dancing. All races and creeds setting aside their differences to unite for one brief, glorious instant in a common goal: gettin' down. And then the server dropped me.

Don't worry, you'll get there. My most satisfying melee kill is still my first run in the Sword of Crota mission. I almost had the last swarm prince killed, and decided I wasn't going to kill him with his own sword. I'm a warrior of the light, a blade of horrible infinite blackness is unbecoming. Look, sometimes I do stupid things in-game for the sake of appearances, okay? So I hit the change weapon button, dropped the sword, and smacked melee. Launched a throwing knife and hit him square between the eyes for all the damage. That's how you clear a mission in style. The titanfist is pretty damn fun, though. Not gonna lie.

Two of seven kids. That's more green hair than most families. ... I'd still like to see more on what happened to the Jenius kids. Like an anime version of Brady Bunch, you know? In all seriousness, though... I'm not saying they need a dedicated series, but... a cameo somewhere would be nice.

Statistically speaking, her family name is probably Jenius. Seems that half the females in the universe carry that surname post-war.

That... sure is a thing. *shakes head in wonder* Tru dat. I've taken to sniping with a hand cannon, just because scout rifles don't have enough oomph(something they've promised to fix "soon") and my sniper rifle has a max ammo capacity like a rawket lawnchair. And my revolver is stupidly accurate at absurd distances. ... Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. Edit: Oh yeah. Got my first purple engram tonight. It decrypted into purple gauntlets. That I actually needed. I mention this mainly to irk everyone that's suffered under the tyranny of the cryptarchs.

What the crap? I would LOVE to see the mechanism on that thing. But I grudgingly withdraw the complaint about revolvers. And go back to simply laughing at the reload animation on my shotgun, which reloads faster after melee kills. Looks like me character is havin' a flipping seizure as she crams the shells into the gun. I'm supposed to be playing sneaky? Wow, I got this totally wrong. I've just been running up and introducing faces to my dagger. I mean, I HAVE guns, but none of them really make that satisfying SHUNK that the knife does when it lands home. MMOFPRPSG

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
JB0 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'm the opposite. I could not stomach the first season. Unfortunately, there's a boring talky bit in the middle of their ultimate battle of ultimate destiny, but the books were like that too. And here we get to the problem with modern anime. No one does a proper adaptation any more(except Arpeggio). They take the print version, copy the script verbatim, and then cut parts out or pad with dead space until it runs in the time allotted. So both seasons have the same problem, effectively. They're just opposite extremes of that problem. Season 1 hacked and slashed and chopped and cut, season 2 puts in random shots of Sinon's leg-roots and The Lizard. -
I was HOPING it was purely cosmetic. But that would be extremely dumb. Admittedly, less dumb than "Mercury became a garden world." More or less. The shooter parts are all fun, the MMORPG parts are all terrible. PERSONALLY, I would have discarded the level mechanic entirely and make the entire game function like it does once you hit level 20. XP gains you skill points and coins of light, but your gear is what makes you stronger and tougher. And if overall gear quality is represented by a single "level" ranking, then so be it. As-is, I feel cheated. The game I thought I was buying, the game I enjoyed for twenty levels, is not the game I have now unless I roll a new character. Eh, I'd do my darnedest to discourage people from sitting there blankly shooting at a cave for six hours at a time too. What they know now is you reduce the spawn rate a little at a time over several patches, without telling anyone. Don't tell them "This is dumb guys, go have fun in the Crucible or something. BTW, we've nerfed your cave." Just DO it. And do it subtle-like. Maybe keep the spawn rate the same, but make the drop quality reduce with each successive spawn in a given window of time. There's a lot of things they COULD do. They chose transparency and honesty, and I'd like to think that can be respected even if you disagree with their thoughts on gameplay. Disagree. They are the worst parts of any game, IMNSHO. I have no patience for farming and grinding whatsoever. An hour spent farming is an hour I could've spent doing something fun instead. But I will ACCIDENTALLY farm if the gameplay is enjoyable enough. Just run around picking fights and cappin' fools and suddenly I'm buried in items, currency, and XP I wasn't looking for. And other MMOs tweak those things all the time to encourage or discourage certain forms of play. They're just less up-front about it. And the upcoming 1.0.2 patch appears to make better gear easier to acquire, since legendary engrams are guaranteed to generate legendary loot, and are added to the reward pool for completing daily story and weekly strike missions. http://www.bungie.net/7_102-Patch-Preview/en/News/News?aid=12202 People are gonna be pissed about that "legendary engrams will be demoted to rare" note, but I'd wager nothing is actually CHANGING with them. They're just swapping the icon color to match the new classification scheme. You'll still hold an identical bell curve in your pockets. I think they underestimated how much trouble rounding good gear up was going to be and cause, honestly. I don't think they wanted people to feel like they had to grind for rep or farm for hours. But that's where the game is now, and they're trying to figure out how to make it a fast game again. Pretty sure the thought is that you can run more than one character, given how the vaults and glimmer are per-account and not per-character. I've rolled one of each race and class at this point, though I'm still playing my huntress mostly. I'd say give it to me, since I only have two grand, but... no trading. But really, I've run into a problem I never expected: I'm out of weapon parts. I have three decent guns with upgrades pending because I don't have the parts. Screw legendary drops. I need more crap guns I can tear down. Yeah, the Crucible is a mess. I can but hope they are taking a good hard look at how they do matchmaking. It'd be nice if owning gear unlocked that model and color combination for application to custom gear. I finally gave up and scrapped my noob gear because it was never going to see use again. The ability to apply shaders per-piece would be nice also. Or even just to apply them to everything except the class item. Just because I want my hunter to run around in bright purple like this is Saint's Row doesn't mean I want my hunter's CAPE to be that same bright purple. Gear customization is something I always want, but never get. On the upside, they got the mechanics right first try. The MMO parts can all be ironed out. And shooting stuff is fun enough that I drop in on patrol missions just to shoot grunts for a bit. Then raid the level 20 hive nest in Russia. Thrall are the funnest things to kill ever and if the legendary cave had been a hive nest, I might would've headed out there just to shoot thrall all day, with loot as a secondary bonus. Honestly, the news updates have made it clear that they know things don't work right and are trying to fix it.

I've actually got no communications whatsoever. Which kind of surprises me after "the Crucible fiasco" And it's totally easy to do level 20 purely in story missions. The problem comes when you have to grind items to level further. As far as the crucible goes, I'm not doing it again until I have access to rumble mode again. I don't care if I get my ass whooped, but I'm not dragging a team down with me in my undergeared incompetence. Speaking of grinding items... first purple gear acquired today. Bought it from my vanguard adviser in the war room. And it bumped me up two levels. That's pretty sweet. Although I'm once again reminded that Bungie's weapon designer doesn't actually know how a gun WORKS and is just sticking gun-looking parts onto a gun-looking frame. If the hammer hits the TOP of your revolver cylinder, the bullet shouldn't come out of the BOTTOM of the cylinder.

Do they have a vernier rocket pointing straight into the wing-mounted missiles there? This seems like a bad idea.

Why I hate online play in a nutshell. That Destiny has traditional shooter multiplayer matchmaking while implementing an RPG-esque gear+skill system that ensures different people have wildly different capabilities is not HELPING, but it's not the root problem.

Normal? I thought it was the best bat-guano crazy Getter Robo homage of all time. Make no mistake, I flippin' loved it, but... that was in large part because it WASN'T normal. -

Sakurai is pretty consistently awesome. Iwaizumi gets caught up in the main guy's harem field and simply ceases to exist for large stretches of time. When he IS around, he's a fun dude, though. -

I might've dropped it two episodes in if it hadn't been for Sakurai. She's a fun character, and a large part of why I plowed through the show as fast as I did. There's a lot of variablity across the run. Some episodes are MUCH better than others, but the second half is fairly decent. Episode 6 is peak stupidity, but it's also hilarious. 7-9 are a single story, and pretty much the high point of the series. Sadly, they close out with an epilogue episode of no value whatsoever. It's not dramatic, not funny, not anything. It just... is.
