Man, I want it. I'm just not sure I want it three hundred dollars worth. Not with the saucer legs on the red and blue lions, anyways. Why don't all four limbots have screw-head legs?

Honestly? I got horizontal and vertical mixed up. Because the V. Stabs look immediately slapped on after-the-fact to me. They hang over empty space, and are clearly not "attached' to anything. (Apparently the prototype intended for them to be canted outward, which actually looks halfway-decent. So they aren't really slapped on so much as they are blatantly mistransformed when in the now-correct configuration)- 9275 replies

Historically speaking, Trek has very much tried to keep people thinking. It is a brand that has generally not WANTED mindless consumers. And perhaps because of this, it has long enjoyed a fan base that is quite active away from the screen as well as in front of it. If the fans were mindless consumers then there wouldn't BE a franchise, just another forgotten 60s TV show. And the first space shuttle would be named Constitution, not Enterprise. The point I am making is that they have a fan base that has been vital and active and engaged for fifty years now. In spite of gross missteps by the brand's handlers at almost every turn. And apparently they think nothing whatsoever of a situation most companies would kill for, and as near as I can tell have been attempting to destroy that fan engagement. They should be CELEBRATING these people, not trying to crush them. (And this sunday I will be steering clear of movie theaters and ignoring what looks to be a terrible movie. I would like to hear otherwise, but hold precious little hope.)

That's why I led in with the "according to" instead of presenting it as hard truth. But on the other hand, it would be a weird thing to make up. And I'd honestly expect CBS/Viacom/Paramount/Star Trek Enterprises Inc to say something to the effect of "did not!" instead of letting a lie like that stand. But on the third hand, the two sides are on unusually disparate footing in this suit. Our corporate overlords likely don't see a REASON to interact with the court of public opinion... and really, that is the biggest issue on display here. In conclusion, regardless of who is right and who is telling the truth, Legal and PR desperately need to sit down and talk to each other. What you CAN do and what you SHOULD do are not always the same. What they've done and how things have progressed from there(see: official fan film guidelines) demonstrates either a startling ignorance of their fanbase, which happens to be one of the largest and most active on Earth, or a callous disregard for same. Instead of stone-faced silence, we should have a dedicated Trek Fan Relations Agent with a long history of community engagement explaining the situation from CBS' view and how things came to the current state. And the fan film guidelines are, well, rubbish, and speak strongly of a corporate mindset that views the fans as mindless consumers of content.

The thing that gets me is... according to the Axanar people they were working closely with a corporate contact to make sure they were staying on the right side of the line, precisely because of the ambitious scope and lack of solid guidelines. And yet, somehow, the first word they had that they weren't on that side of the line anymore was a subpoena. That is, ummm, really shitty.

Man, there had to be a way to design the chest plate where the back side would be a decent truck roof. It'd be no more of an issue than putting it on the back, and I personally am far more forgiving of a janky back-end than I am a roof. And that roof REALLY looks like it was designed for a cover to snap over it.- 9275 replies

Some jerkface took my standard female character name of "JaneBob". I was somewhat nonplussed. My exact thoughts were "Who would even WANT a stupid name like that?... aside from me, that is." Yeah, I think the original post was about Google's April First gimmick that year. Joys of living in my neighborhood... there's something like six churches within easy walking distance, all of which have AT LEAST one pokéstop(two of them have two). You can hit all of them on a half-hour walk at a rather sedate pace. Despite this, I saw six people drive slowly down the street in front of one of them, stopping for 30-60 seconds right in front of the church gate. Runbots! Hax!

That isn't unique. The Atari Flashbacks, Colecovision Flashback, Intellivision Flashback are all official and all ran for about half that. Intellivision one even came with a set of controller overlays. The Firecore Genesis units typically run half that and maintain the ability to use real cartridges. (They also have significant audio glitches because the Firecore chipset has some errors in the implementation. ATGames is moving to ARM+emulator for future Genesis productions) Basically, this is a Nintendo Flashback console. And it is priced at 2x everything else because Nintendo.

I don't really consider it "funding development" at this point. As near as I can tell, they actually have a released game and are selling subscriptions, like any other MMO. They even have a free trial event going on now. As I intimated before, I don't believe they will ever change labels from "crowdfunded development" and into "product release", no matter what the reality of their business model is. They like holding a record for most money raised from a crowdfunding campaign, and will do their best to keep it growing.

Re: Not-Astrotrain... I opt out of train and robot mode comparisons, but they're both terrible shuttles. Arguing about which one is better is a moot point. Toyworld tries to look like an STS orbiter, gets 80% there, and then just gives up and completely craps the bed at the ends. I guess trying to reproduce Astrotrain's shuttle mode and not the STS orbiter, but Astrotrain's shuttle mode was rather clearly supposed to actually be an STS orbiter. The design was compromised heavily for the train mode. Where modern engineering should've allowed them to bring the original vision to life, they chose instead to immortalize the shortcomings. The DX one... is a better shuttle than that Takara Blastoff toy? This is what they call damning with faint praise, because there's little to praise. It is an AWFUL shuttle. The original Astrotrain toy made a better shuttle, for Primus' sake, and he was a terrible shuttle too! I think it is better to be a terrible cybertronic shuttle than a bad STS orbiter, though. You can't point to specific flaws on the former and go "that is NOTHING like the real thing" because there is no real thing to compare it to. Get back to me when someone bests Super SpayC. He's only been the reigning champion for thirty years now. FINALLY! It is about time someone did- My heart, it is broken.- 9275 replies

That is about when I played it last. It was always straddling that line between really fun and really boring. I feel it skews more towards fun now that I'm in a Constitution and carrying a flip-phone communicator. Meh, it's an emulator. Same as the Retron 5/REtroFreak/insert Rasberry Pi hack here. Except it uses Wii controllers instead of USB or Bluetooth devices. I am waiting for it to hit retail so we can see which license violations it is guilty of and how easy it is to load new ROM images. Credit where it is due, though. Packaging is nice, and it's a really good game selection. Licensed EVERYONE'S crap, it looks like. It's a really solid "greatest hits" bundle of ROM images. Even includes that game where Mario is an evil child-murdering slaver(Donkey Kong Jr is the best thing ever). They even included StarTropics, and that gets precious little love these days(or any other days, really) ... Oh no... no, no no no... what were they thinking when they included Star Tropics?! PLEASE tell me there's some consideration for the "secret code" portion of the game that requires the original paper documents(or GameFAQs) to pass...

So Star Trek Online added the ability to role a captain from Kirk's era and gallivant across the galaxy in 1960s style(before being time-travelled forward to the game's post-Voyager setting at the end of the tutorial missions). This has got me to boot the game up again, because 60s captain! And I find that they also tweaked several aspects of the game to make it more fun for a new captain. Most notably, since I was higher level at the end of the tutorial, I could get a higher-tier ship, so space combat is far less tedious. While my original captain's post-tutorial vessel, the USS Polychromatic, was a worthless Miranda-class vessel that struggled to do anything other than drift leisurely in a straight line, forever too slow to be worth taking into a fight... her time-displaced cohort has transferred from his original USS Inquisitor and it's 1960's special effects to the USS Inquisitor-A, which is both a little more Hollywood and capable of flying rings around klingon battlecruisers as well as particularly sluggish asteroids. MOST importantly, however, the Inquisitor-A is a Constitution-class vessel! instead of a friggin' Miranda. It just feels more Star Trek in a Constitution. However, I still have to share a galactic map with Captain Deez Nuts of the USS Suck It.

Also colony fleets apparently are (or at least used to be) under standing orders to eliminate any zentraedi fleets they stumbled across, and not to attempt to escape or "culturize" them. That, by necessity, implies a not-insignificant surplus of power beyond what they need for a defensive escort. And by "not-insignificant surplus", I of course mean that they haul planet-destroying quantities of firepower around just so they can fight their way through if they happen to stumble across a very low-odds encounter that they don't, tactically speaking, HAVE to fight their way through. I think it is safe to say that, official charter or not, colony fleets are ABSOLUTELY about force projection. Also, for a flippant comedy episode, Fleet of the Strongest Women was KINDA DARK just under the surface. -
