  1. Yeah, low-altitude folds are generally not a good idea. The zentradi were shocked by Global's move in SDF, and the crew of Macross 7 considered a surface fold a bad idea even when they ran out of other options. But the catastrophic effects seen in SDF were attributed to the boobytrap as opposed to the unusually low fold altitude or direct operator error. It seems probable that safeties which would have presented such a mishap were disabled in the process of setting up the boobytrap mechanism. And with it being the only fold mechanism humanity had ever seen, they wouldn't know what proper safety mechanisms looked like Particularly as the Supervision Army vessel found during the factory satellite capture operation wasn't there when they sent an investigation team back later. That implies to me that the boobytrap programming is designed to move or eliminate discovered traps. Moving it out of the area would require the fold system to be interfaced with the boobytrap code, and destroying it would be quite easily facilitated by disabling safeties.
  2. Oh man, that show is fantastic!
  3. Aww, it wasn't the crew's fault. They state in-show the SDF fold accident (and the malfunctioning gravity controllers) was due to side effects of the boobytrap, not proximity to the surface or user error.
  4. My mistake. Saves me the trouble of feeling dumb when the group I'm watching it with gets to the finale, I can get my dumb out of the way now.
  5. I still say the biggest problem with Rowboat tech's YF-1R is that the head ISN'T the animation error head. The 1A head looks really friggin' good with the extra lasers, but RT's 1R head is an ugly hexagonal mess.
  6. I don't recall them ever being strong enough to activate the sound boosters, which was the original goal. Basara wasn't alone in looking down on them, Dr. Chiba said if it was up to him everyone would've failed the audition. They were definitely forced into the field before they were ready, though. No attempt was made to prepare them for the experience of combat, nor were their song energy levels high enough to be relevant. I get the feeling Basara knew it would end up that way.
  7. And once Sound Force was formalized and he was forced to acknowledge it, he basically gave the military the middle finger and kept doing his own thing. In fairness, his refusal to help set up the Jamming Birds was a combination of him literally not being able to teach music theory like they wanted him to, and the military appointing a group of singers that weren't capable of doing the job. As I rewatch 7, I'm noticing Basara has a bit more nuance than I've tended to give him credit for. Not a LOT more nuance, but... a little bit.
  8. That should really be their new marketing catchphrase. Power Rangers: Better than you expected!
  9. So Voltron needs a mane that pops out of the black lion when he combines? That'd be pretty darn cool, actually.
  10. I am almost certain that he knew the difference. And that he knew enough about the franchise to know that saying "reflex" would get people up in arms, too. In short, he was trolling.
  11. I thought the black lion was the king lion and the limbs were all lionesses.
  12. Well, in fairnes, Voltron isn't a human. It's a robot designed to look like a chimera made solely of lions... in which case, why does none of them have a mane? Seriously, I think black lion needs a mane next time they redesign Voltron.
  13. I hate seeing ads for ads. Get back to me when they have a real trailer ready.
  14. The dark suit shoulder pads just made it look like it should transform into a motorcycle. ... Which is to say, obviously, that it was the most awesome version of her suit.
  15. I know I'm weird, but I'd like to see a non-varia version. The base suit is slick.
  16. It is actually possible NOW to make artificial lighting with broad-spectrum light and the needed UV components, actually. Especially if you want huge amounts of light. In fact, some modern light technologies require filters because they put out too MUCH UV. So that isn't really a problem, as it is one solvable without the benefit of overtechnology. Though I imagine that overtech makes it easier to do at much lower power levels, and to get the brightness levels needed to simulate a citywide "sun". They may cheat with a more diffuse light source plus the hologram of a sun in the sky to trick the brain into filling in the gaps, but highly directional lighting is still preferable to get shadow behaviors consistent with natural lighting.
  17. Also happens twice in Macross 7. Once during production of the (admittedly wildly inaccurate) Lynn Minmay Story, and again later on the (admittedly even more inaccurate) tabloid cover claiming Basara is the illegitimate child of Hikaru and Minmay. (I happen to be rewatching 7 lately.)
  18. Awww, let's be fair to the poor guy. He got popped before anyone realized there was an enemy in the area. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But he really shouldn't have been making fun of Hikaru's love life anyways. It's just too easy. Like shooting fish in a barrel.
  19. Seems reasonable to me. Let's be honest, if someone was doing a movie now about the introduction of the F-14, would they make sure they got period-appropriate planes, or would they be "Well, that's more or less what the dash looked like on the news in Desert Storm, I think it's close enough."? I fully expect to see someone do a movie about the Vietnam War in a few years with Tomcats and Blackhawks everywhere.
  20. It is definitely fun, it's just... meandered a lot as they shuffled from one seemingly pointless bit of nonsense to the other. Whether it's Joseph Joestar opening up a vein to find an invisible baby or Rohan playing the most dramatic game of Rock-Paper-Scissors ever, it is consistently awesome and inane in equal measures. The italian restaurant episode is still the best, though.
