The computer and electronics super geek thread
JB0 replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
AMD parts are not immune to Meltdown, it is just harder to pull off. Basically, rumor and hearsay took hold before any public knowledge was available, and now both companies are using it to take potshots. That said, I'm still mad at Intel over the management engine omnihack, and generally abusive business practices. Edit: relevant part of the whitepaper: -
I did notice the cockpit view shows a dual-throttle setup that "converts" your boring robotron-style inputs. It gives me all sorts of ideas. Big problem seems to be the game isn't set up for head-track aiming. If it was, dual-throttle would work AMAZING.

The Slag and Skyfire are definitely unofficial toys. Pretty sure that's true on all the dinobots and most of the mini-cars.- 17103 replies

Honestly, how I feel about single-mode robots depends a lot on the design and the character. Like Drift here. I think he works REALLY well as an action figure. His humanoid form isn't exactly evocative of his vehicle form, and his character begs for stylish and dynamic poses that can be more readily achieved without having to make concessions to transformation. In something like Optimus, where he basically wears half a truck like a shirt and the other half like a pair of jeans, I am a lot less forgiving of non-transformation. His design begs for it on a fundamental level. I'm not saying a Prime HAS to change into a truck, just that it is harder to convince me a single-mode Prime is a good idea. ... Never mind that the general attitude these days seems to be that Prime needs to wear a FAKE truck-front on his chest because the actual front of a truck doesn't look Prime enough, which results in a lot of complex engineering to basically remove the essence of the transformation from the toy, making them somehow less authentic than one that doesn't transform. *sigh*- 17103 replies

No one's trying to subjugate anyone. It is merely a long-running joke, and any community that doesn't have a few in-jokes is probably fairly unhealthy. There's no scorn for calling the character Drift. And we'll give IDW a lot of credit for making Drift into a genuinely interesting character, regardless of how rocky his start was. But some of us old folks are gonna reminisce about our favorite fanfic-writing, pocky-powered Transformer. Not out of judgement or exclusion, but because he brings us joy. I'm sorry you took it as an attempt to put you down. It was merely an attempt to share the joy of Peg.- 17103 replies

It didn't hurt that we made up an entire parody character, at a time when actual Drift's portrayal was "bad fanfic character".- 17103 replies

Let's collect thought in the Macross 35th anniversary!! !
JB0 replied to Mari-ja's topic in Movies and TV Series
And even then, by Macross 7 they are largely relegated to supporting roles. They have stepped aside to let the new kids have their time to shine. It is nice to have a story that comes to a conclusion, and that's what the original Macross offers us. Things aren't continued forever as Hikaru attracts an ever-larger collection of females pining over him and the war drags on for decades with no end in sight. Even just name-dropping the Ichijo couple comes with risks. Eventually, every event in the galaxy involves the Ichijo clan for some reason, and it just gets ridiculous. Besides, the Jeniuses won't tolerate competition. -

My understanding is that Mattel's biggest problem is they DO sell Barbie and Hot Wheels by the metric buttload. More specifically, that they set unrealistic expectations for everything else. Every new product they introduce winds up being compared to those two lines by upper management, and thus has very little time to find a place in the market and has to do VERY well once it does get a toehold. Effectively, if it isn't an immediate superhit Mattel doesn't want to sell it.

I meant does it support the SD adapter they sold for the Firecore-based Genesissies. Most of those didn't have an integral SD slot, but they could read SD cards through a special cartridge(that didn't work in a real Genesis). https://atgames.co/collections/accessories/products/mega-expert-passport This thing.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
JB0 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I've not watched Kantai Collection. It just looked terribly dull from everything I saw. More importantly, it has a distinct lack of a Kirishima prone to melodramatic spectacles and turning into a children's toy. ... Look, all I'm saying is Arpeggio Kirishima is best boat bear. -

Honestly, I think her smaller size is largely because of the engineering. There's a lot of parts in there I don't expect to see at this size, like collapsing toes. And half of an entire second torso installed in the saddle area, for ... some reason. What I like about her is she both is and isn't a G1 homage at the same time. She's new and fresh, while still feeling like she came to me from the 80s(aside from the small size and lack of metal). I feel like, by dinobot standards, she IS a feminine design. Slender legs and a narrow waist. She isn't designed like a hulking mass of raw strength, even moreso than Swoop.- 17103 replies

Boat Girls and their Admiral! Arpeggio of Blue Steel was waaaaaay better than it had a right to be, and I genuinely love it. -

So to add to the recent dinobots... I saw the new member, Slash, for sale today. Aesthetically, she LOOKS like a dinobot in both modes. They did a good job keeping to the GI aesthetic. If you told me she was based on an 80s dinobot, I'd believe you. Her deinonychus* claws hang under her arms in robot mode, but I'm okay with it. They kind of look like tonfas, and that is how I'm selling it in my head. Her dinosaur arms hang off her butt, and this is something I'm less okay with. Her dinosaur mode cleans up rather nicely, though the dinosaur torso is a bit plump, and has a gap where robo-abs don't meet robo-legs. I probably would have slung her robot legs OVER her torso instead of under it, so they looked like a backpack(a la Swoop). But dinosaur mode is already top-heavy, that could easily make it worse. Pretty decent engineering for such a small toy, honestly. Only thing I can directly fault them for is that the dino arms are on 1-axis swivels instead of ball joints. The headmaster saddle, surprisingly, doesn't compromise the dinosaur mode much at all. It exists in the nook her dinosaur head disappears to in robot mode, and consequently has a trapdoor that closes over it when not in use. I'd like to see her rebuilt in a larger toy(though it is highly unlikely to happen). It wouldn't be hard for the dinosaur arms to stash away instead of hanging off her butt, and it would greatly improve her robot mode. Also, a larger toy would allow for the fists and claws to be hidden in their respective modes(or the claws to convert to look more like robot weapons) *Yes, deinonychus. I'm fighting the velociraptor hegemony. One of these is among the most important dinosaurs of the twentieth century, the other is a movie star. And Jurassic Park's raptors were deinonychus in all but name anyways.- 17103 replies

Obviously, the PROPER scale is the five-foot-wide super-cassette that comes out of Soundwave's robot chest. I won't settle for a Ravage smaller than a VHS tape! In seriousness, I'm just saying that Soundwave and his children present unique scale issues. Also, the packaging is brilliant!- 9268 replies
