Indeed! "Oomph" may be a problem in a condo as it was for me when I lived in a townhouse. But there still isn't anything like a sound system with good imaging and natural sounding tones. Take Diana Krall's "Love Scenes" CD. Listening to her on that album, my huge speakers seem to disappear if that makes sense. The sound is so natural and her voice becomes "centered" and the soundstage transparent if you will. To the untrained ear one would think her voice is coming from the center channel while the other instruments are seperated across a stage from left to right just like a live performance. You can hear fingers plucking off the guitar strings. Yani's "Live At The Metropolis" is another good reference CD to check sound or the "Sessions at West 54th St." DVD. So yes, I agree; it's not about just being loud, but also being able to reproduce the sound the way it's intended to be. OO- 376 replies

Hi-Def and Home Theater Thread 2
MacrossMan replied to mikeszekely's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Depending on how deep your pockets are, the sky is the limit when it comes to spending on AV equipment. I used to work in home audio at Circuit City some years ago. That's when they still carried all the high-end components you normally find in a home theater store. They carry garbage for the most part today. They had an awesome program called "accommodations" where we could buy stuff for well below whole sale. The thought was for vendors to offer their products to us sales guys for next to nothing so we could test them out at home and come back to the store and sale them. All my stuff was on the lower end of the high end in terms of what was available at the time. You do not have to spend a whole lot of money to get a nice sounding system. You just have to know how to choose the right components. My next door neighbor actually has a dedicated theater room that resembles a small movie theater: curtains, low lighting, stadium seating, dark painted celing, projector, silver screen, etc., etc. The builder chose cheesy components and cheap cabling (yes, cables do make a difference!). My open man cave with 10 year old components dances circles around his dedicated theater sound wise. As far as the HT hobby being addictive for me? Meh, it's too expensive and too much is available. Until something is released that totally changes the game I'll be sticking with my current set up. I've not been impressed with what's out there today.- 376 replies

Has anyone mentioned Contra? Another great Toynami game from the late 80's. If my memory serves me right I think there was a movie made for this one... OO -
Surprisingly, you can find awesome deals through Amazon.com. Although I have dealt with Tisinc directly on several transactions, I find their prices to be cheaper through their Amazon storefront.

Since this is the Hi-Def and Home Theater Thread I figured I'd add pics of my set up. Nothing too fancy as most of my components are at least 10 years old. Most patch cables are 10 year old Monster Cable Reference Series. All HDMI, Optical, LFE Digital Coax, and speaker cables are extended runs from Monoprice and fished through the walls to conceal them. Hi-Def and Home Theater Thread 2

We had a housefull at Thanksgiving last year and there was a gathering of people watching the movie. The opening scene when Lennox and crew are returning to Qatar pretty much made everyone in the house stop and wonder where the vibration was coming from; but Blackout's first fire blast brought the commotion in the house to stand still and there was immediately about 30 people packed into my man cave. I think it all depends on your set up. Please believe the frequency is there. The LFE channel is so intense on the DVD that I have to turn the volume down on the sub while watching the movie. It causes the amp the sub to overheat so that you can smell it when you walk near it. OO- 376 replies

I purchased an extender and can now wirelessly stream all my digital content (including HD) to my man cave. Ripping Blu-Ray is a pretty tedious process and time consuming at this point, but I am sure it will be a lot easier in the future. As of right now I really use the extender to access my music library and stream standard definition TV via satellite. Using Media Center I get free DVR service. I had a get together recently and everyone was amazed at being able to pull up the music and DVD movie library on the TV let alone stream it on my wireless network. The extender is one sweet device! My 10 year old Velodyne CT-120 makes your heart vibrate while watching TF and I'm only using DVD. My two fronts are 10 year old Polk Audio RT3000p's with with built-in powered subs and I get full range sound from them but my LFE channel is fed to the dedicated sub and I have no problem making the house shake with the TF soundstage. I sure hate that the 3X did not come through, but I liked the centered version better. Thanks for the attempt. -
I figured you guys could relate. Robotech hadn't hit the states yet and the only anime I was aware of at the time was G-Force and Gaiking (spelling). I remember going to Service Merchandise in the spring of 1985 and seeing Jetfire for the first time. Still remember the stickered price tag on it for $29.95; Service Merchandise was a little more expensive than Target and Wal-Mart. Who would have known 24 years these toys would be as popular as they are today. Man, I think back to January of this year when I started looking for a Jetfire toy and started seeing all these "different color" Jetfires. I was like who would want a Jetfire with Black and Yellow on it??? Then I saw the Yamato "Jetfires" and was holy shiggity!!! Once I realized what I was looking at, it brought back memories of Robotech; that "more realistic Transformers" cartoon. I had to purchase all the videos to start watching them again and by then Macross had peaked my interest. That's my story of how I came to fall in love with this highly addictive hobby, but seeing the old toys that started it all sure does bring back fond memories of being a kid! The toys today can't be marketed with handguns. I had friends who had Megatron way back when and we never had the desire to shoot or harm anyone or do anything violent. We were just kids playing Transformers with a toy that happened to transform into a handgun. Things sure have changed! OO

David you might consider a new PC with Blu-Ray with an MC Extender. I was tetering on a PS3, but I haven't played a gaming system since Super Nintendo. Oddly enough, the more real the games and their graphics got, the more I lost interest, but that's a whole other subject. Anywho, for what I wanted it just made more sense to purchase a new PC with the following specs: HP PAVILION ELITE M9300T PC WITH TV/PVR ATSC-NTS TVTUNER WITHHPPVR, FMTUNER, REMOTE INTEGRATED 7/1 SOUND W/FRONT AUDIO PORTS NORTON INTERNET SECURITY(M)2008 – 15 MONTH MICROSOFT ® WORKS 9.0 KEYBOARD & HP OPTICAL MOUSE HOME & HOME OFFICE INSERT GENUINE WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREM. I had a get together recently and everyone was amazed at being able to pull up the music and movie library on the TV let alone stream it on my wireless network. I must it's pretty bad ass and for the application you are considering using the PS3 for I would seriously consider investing a few extra bucks and go with a PC with an extender device. So I'm at my mom's house visiting recently and thumb through some old photo albums. I come across some pictures from Chirstmas 1984. I was 10 years and in 5th grade then; a true kid of the 80's! A time before mp3 players. Peep the chunky knock-off "Sony Walkman" cassette player that I was so proud of! That thing only had fast forward on it. I remember having to press stop and eject to flip the tape over to rewind! Ha! My friends thought I was odd because I was into the US Truck electric track sets instead of the racing car sets. When the GI Joe version was released I begged and pleaded for it and low and behold old jolly St. Nick came through! And my goodness, Transformers were born! I lucked up and got Soundwave. I had friends who got Optimus Prime, Megatron, Jazz, Starscream, Thundercracker, Bluestreak, etc. Later that chilly, brisk and overcast afternoon we all met up at the neighborhood playground and were out in the dirt playing Transformers! I even brought my C.L.A.W. (that red wagon deal that Soundwave is sitting in) to get in on the action. Man oh man, what it was to be a kid back then! Let's see you guys old school pics! OO

I'm surprised I have not seen any discussion on the upcoming release of the new Transformers movie. Apparently the release date is June 26, 2009. I'll start off with the first rumor I've been following. I read somewhere that Jetfire will be in the new movie. How awesome will that be? If this is indeed the truth I will certainly be entertaining the purchase of a minty fresh G1 Jetfire as he is what led me to this site back in January of this year. Who would you guys like to see in the new movie? OO

Little boys are way awesome when it comes to this stuff miriya! I went in my son's playroom the other day and he had transformers set up in poses throughout the room in certain places. When I asked him what he was doing he said "I am collecting them daddy". The boy is 6 years old and can transform leader class Optimus Prime in under a minute. I still haven't quite figured out how to transform him. Every yellow car we see he yells out Bumblebee!!! We saw an old late 70's Camaro one day and he about jumped out of his skin with excitement. He's a lot of fun.
