Why Should Expensive Macross Toys Be Transformable At All?
MacrossMan replied to Cyclone Trooper's topic in Toys
Excellent questions. I posted a question in regards to models or toys that was locked for some reason. My answer to the question kind of revolves around that subject. I consider myself an adult collector. I never "play" with these toys and really consider them models or collector grade toys. I got in the game too late to purchase two of everything, but had I started collecting long ago that is what I would have done. One to display and one to keep minty fresh in a box. -
My son a has boatload of Transformers. He also has some Toynami 1/100 figures. His first "Macross" toy was one of the first figures I purchased which was a Joon knock-off. He's since demolished it. But now that he sees how I care of my Yamato stuff he tries to "collect" his stuff by displaying them in some cubes in my display. He's getting better at caring for his stuff and keeping up with the pieces. I am considering getting him his first v2 1/60 Valk for Christmas this year. These are so rock solid that I let him play with mine periodically. I don't have to encourage him though. He's already into Macross.

I would love a 1/60 dio myself! No problem miriya. You've gotta put your bay to work too! When I asked you about a 1/60 diorama I got the idea to add some 1/60 Valks to it and see how it worked out. Couldn't pass up on taking some shots to share with the forum. It actually works pretty good. Certainly not to scale, but still makes a cool background! Thanks! -

Thanks woflx. I couldn't build that bay if it depended on my life. The ground crew set is still available just about everywhere. Google 1/48 U.S. Ground Crew Set. I believe there are two versions. You hit on the nose m1979! Ron5864 is the man for the job. He does a lot of custom stuff for his own personal collection. Check with him and see if he can hook you up. Ron builds these from scratch to the specified scale. I am completely ignorant to the stuff so it all seems ingenious to me! -
I've told this story more than once here, but the points you have made coincide with my love affair for Yamato Macross stuff. I remember when I first started looking for a G1 Jetfire in January of 2008. I was totally shocked that a mint one was going for upwards of $200 or more. I'd rather walk through hell with gasoline drawlz before I spent that kind of loot on a "toy". Fast forward to my first Yamato Valk, and the question of price went out the window. I was clueless to what Macross and "Do You Remember Love" was but knew they had "Jetfires" in "different colors". I remember scoffing at a "black and yellow" Jetfire. Hell, all I needed was one that had Jetfire's color scheme. Here I am a year later with a little more knowledge on the show and what not and I feel as you do as far as the accuracy of Yamato's toys (QC is anothe issue). The engineering behind these "toys" is incredible. I also remember falling out of love with the hope of obtaining a pristine Jetfire once I got a Yamato Valk as well as not being appalled at the steep price. Very much worth it in my opinion.

15 years ago, I was a 19 year kid out on my own trying to find my way; and knew nothing of Macross! If only I knew then what I know now. I had the dough, but certainly not the knowledge to be gobbling up 1/55 scale chunky monkies for cheap!

Damn that's awsome Ron! The weathering really brings the panel lines out. Great job man!

Cool deal and thanks.

This was Roy's VF-1S. Not sure if it was part of the first release or not. It's that big of deal though. I plan on seeing if I can get replacements from Overdrive. The 1D should be fine as I think it got the fixes probably before it went into production. My 1D is finally being processed by customs. It had been inbound into customs since April 3rd, but I learned from my wait on the TV Max that they can be slow sometimes. Guess I'll have to be patient until next week.

1/60 scale Valks in a 1/48 diorama here.

Scratch that. It appears the 1/48 factory works well for 1/60 as well. See it here.

Decommissioning the VF-0S and 0A Roy gets a peek at the next generation VF-1 Oh yeah! Trash that gargantuan P-0S! -
Transformed mine to gerwalk this morning and noticed cracks a both shoulder pins. No way to retract my perfect vote. Oh well, still a cool toy nonetheless.

I could better gauge whether or not to pick up one of the helmets if I had an idea of what the SDF-1 is going to cost us. For me, it is a must have. I'm not hung up on the version either.

You guys will have to excuse my ignorance if this should have been obvious, but I have been checking out some of the models in Model Grafix in the magazines section. Is it me, do models, hands down, make toys look like; well toys! The detail and the difference in the molds are incredible! My question is why can't the toys have the kind of detail of the models? In an attempt to answer my own question I am going to assume the amount of detail work that goes into them is unrealistic for mass production? Even if that might be the answer, why do models have that "perfect" look that the toys don't?
