Your most recent Macross or toy purchase! General thread.
Lorindor replied to Gakken85's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Not true. The original series and Macross II have been dubbed as well (MacII is no longer canon, but still official). DYRL? has also received a few dubs, but all official ones are by most considered horrible. The fandub is quite good though.I remember seeing something about Macross Frontier receiving a fandub, but I don't know what happened with that. -
There's a thing called grey scales. It's not just black or white, for or against. But because I can agree it wasn't fully clear, I want to rephrase my previous statement: I don't normally have anything against unlicensed garage kits or similar items. To comment on your exaggerated example, a $900 resin kit would probably, from my understanding, have quite a hefty profit margin. If so, that would be equally greedy in my opinion. And it's still earning all this money from someone else's creation, someone else's work, which is my main gripe.

Precisely. Thank you.

Well, as I see it, buying anything Robotech at least indirectly supports Tatsunoko, for what it's worth. We are here talking about supporting companies that have nothing to do with Macross at all. The problem with this is that the unlicensed products do not compete on the same terms as the licensed products. Without paying license fees, the U3Ps have the potential to compete with lower price points. Good for customers, yes, but remember that some of that license fee is going towards making new Macross anime productions. If unlicensed toys become too widespread, I can see how this could hurt the franchise, especially since the Macross toy market is so small and easily saturated.

Alright, you use the technical definition of design while I used the popular. In my mind, when Miyatake Kazutaka originally drew the SDF-1, he designed it. We're not in much disagreement then. My point is that infringement on image/character is still in a moral and legal grey zone. Then of course, anyone are free to find their own justifications for still buying it. I mean, that's what I try to do for myself here, since the more I think about it, I think I want this product. Still, I would much rather see my money go toward those who actually own the likeness of the SDF-1 Macross. To clarify, I don't have anything against unlicensed garage kits or similar items. Those are often designed by passionate fans, is a true labor of love and there's not much money in it. Heck, I'm somewhat involved in something similar myself, so I would be a hypocrite if I thought otherwise. But what we have here is a company selling a factory-made, (relatively) mass-produced high-end toy that doesn't seem to respect the origin of the design that much to begin with. It just seems greedy.

David Hingtgen, I think we just use different definitions of counterfeit and your definition is just more narrow than mine. And it might be that I am using the wrong English terminology. Is rip-off a better word for what I'm talking about? Regardless what word is used, I'm still pretty sure it could be considered IP and/or trademark infringement where I live, but your country may have different laws and we see it differently because of that.

The name change wouldn't matter. I'm pretty sure that random shoes branded as "Nikee" or "Rebook" would also be considered illegal infringement of some kind. And it's obvious that this toy is supposed to be the SDF-1 Macross, there's no way around that. The super deformation of the design does not change that they used someone else's IP without permission and that the original creators of Macross won't get a dime from it. Thankfully, I've learned now that possessing counterfeit items, or whatever you want to call them, are not actually illegal in my country (but the rules do indeed vary greatly between different EU member states). So then it's just the moral grey zone to navigate through left for me.

Don't be silly. I'm talking more about like getting a $200 fine and having the item confiscated. What I meant was that I'm no legal expert and have to look it up. It would suck to get into trouble if it can be avoided. I just know that the EU takes IPR infringement and counterfeits very seriously. I also know that bringing any counterfeit into my country is illegal, even if it's in good faith. But I think the focus is on European brands and the people at the customs office wouldn't know anything about Macross anyway, so it's probably quite safe.

I’m torn by this release. In the end, it is IP theft and some details like the VF-1J with four head cannons even suggests a lack of respect for the IP. I don't like that. On the other hand, the rest of the product looks really nice. Although, I am aware that good lightning, color refinements and other digital touch ups can make any plastic crap look good… And before I decide to buy it or not, I might need to look up if it’s even legal for me to own this item by European Union laws.

I think I preferred the YF-30 pre-order when Macrossworld were the site that crashed and not the E-shops...

Actually saw the 'Add to cart' button on AmiAmi, but the cart page wouldn't load and I had it in my cart on CDjapan, but the system forced me to reset the password and therefore I got cartjacked...

Any plans of reissuing the Garfish? If I get the clam, it would be nice to display them together.- 419 replies

Actually, I had a similar experience as Shukenzero with Amiami. After adding the item to the basket, I had to log in to check out. Knowing there might be a risk of cart jacking, I got quite stressed, fumbled on the phone keyboard and got a failed log in attempt as a result. But I got the item in the end anyway. I don't how it worked, but it did.

I actually got one at Amiami! I can't really believe my luck. Afterwards, I kept starring at the order aknowledgement email and it just felt surreal. After all the insane hiked up prices and penalty custom taxes I have had to experience with this line, it was finally my time to get a Bandai Macross toy for cheap.
-
Finally got my YF-19 from NY by SAL! Thankfully, I avoided any custom fees and taxes - it could have been really ugly otherwise. It’s good to see that NY is still willing to down-mark the declared value even though they have this “Trans-logistic” shipping option. I hope they keep it up; otherwise I might be out of this price point in the future. The fighter came with no damages, just a few black grease stains here and there that were easy to wipe off. I tried to put on the FAST packs in fighter mode and I now understand why so many complain about them. It went much better when I understood that you have to use the filler pieces and suddenly everything aligned perfectly. Now I want to display it with some armaments, but I’m getting quite picky. First of all, I don’t know what any of the different armaments are supposed to be, except the reaction missiles. Have anyone figured it out? I want the selection on the wings to make some sense at least, like the pilot would actually choose that combination for an actual mission. I also wonder if there is an optimal placement for each different kind of armament, if you look at it realistically. Like if you consider weight balance, stability and drag forces, and so on. Any military aircraft expert out there that can give some basic input?

I'm so glad that I'm not a Bandai valk completionist. My wallet too.

I chose ferry shipping for my VF-19P during the great panic buy since I wanted to save on shipping and come under this level for when I have to pay extra taxes in my country. However, three months are a long time... I would not do it again. But try to think positive, you at least got cheap shipping.
-
When I tried to change shipping method for a preorder at NY recently, they said they couldn't do it and I had to cancel the order and make a new one.

Hopefully, if the new anime is brought to the West and becomes successful, there could be a chance for the original novels to be released in English. I hope that at least.

Your most recent Macross or toy purchase! General thread.

Thanks for the information! Is it the same for the other figures in the package? Because I don't think I will actually display the wedding dress figure. I actually didn't know about the figures before I saw the auction. I never got the Q-rau before since I knew one of the releases had a pilot figure and thus was superior in my mind, but it was also the most expensive and difficult to find. But this combo was the better choice all along! Now I not only have a pilot figure, I also have an extra figure to display alongside the toy. Why don't the reviews tell you that? Were there ever a similar figure package for Max? -

Found these on a local auction site. The box of the Queadluun-Rau had been opened, but the toy was in very good condition, and the figures were MISB. Best of all - low domestic shipping and no custom fees or extra taxes! So it only landed on the equivalent of $175 in total. Since the only alternative for me would essentially be the horrors of eBay, I consider that a steel. -
Well, they would probably want to milk the mold, so a CF is not completely impossible. Depending on the price, I would perhaps buy a CF as well.

I came into valk collecting too late for getting the old VF-0 toys, and the problems with them have made me hold back. But I would definitely buy the 0D and a potential new 0S and 0A as well. However, I had hoped Arcadia's next toy would have been a VF-5000. Oh well, better luck next time.
