Sorry... must've missed/misunderstood it. It would make perfect sense for Bandai to use the same molds for a possible YF-19 that they created for their VF-19Adv -- for all practical purposes, they are the same space-frame; however, in order to create a genuine Alpha One, Bandai needs to make new molds for the split canopy, the cockpit interior, and the top and bottom nose section fuselage... all to have the front canopy flip forward.

The color scheme on the VF-31 toy that's been shown reminds me an awful lot of this:

From the posted picture, it appears to be quite a bit different from their VF-19Adv, not just "paint". And if one were to split hairs, there wouldn't be any mold changes at all for a DX VF-19Kai... there would be all new molds, as well as specifying/sourcing fire-engine red pigmented ABS.

Hence why I added the "as long as BW grants the rights" caveat. I'll defer to your expertise in licensing legalities, however, as I readily admit that I'm not well versed in such matters. One thing is certain, if you're right and Bandai is indeed releasing a 1/60 sized YF-19 (forward hinged canopy front section and all), then Arcadia undoubtedly lost, or chose not to renew, the license for Alpha One, and likely the whole M+ property... It's not like they were doing much with it anyway, so Bandai might as well have a crack at it.
-
Bandai's DX line makes no claim to scale. Arcadia's license is clearly scale specific (purposefully stated on the box of every Macross PT toy they've produced), even if the toys are rarely exactly 1/60. Bandai's stuff are all non-scale, even if it's patently obvious that they are 1/60 when measured or compared to Yamato/Arcadia's offerings. In the real of licensing that would mean that there is room for both, as long as BW grants the rights.
-
Perhaps; but then again, Arcadia's license is 1/60 scale specific, while Bandai's DX line is non-scale... so, who knows?

It's easier to list what is NOT different: Landing gears, maybe, and perhaps the pilot seat.

Applying real-world aerodynamics, structural considerations, and physical limitations to anything Star Wars is utterly pointless. Everything from the originals, with the possible exception of the A-Wing, were as streamlined as bricks.

It's molded in color (the plastic pigment used determines the color) with matching paint for some of the metal bits, paint application for the stripes and tampo printing for the livery. Matt or gloss depends on the finish of the tooling specified by Bandai; someone who already has the 1J with GBP on-hand can chime in on just how reflective the actual surface is; everything looks semi-gloss to gloss, but pictures on the web can be highly deceptive.

^ To me, it's not the facial sculpt that's the problem with these dolls... it's those eyes; they creep me out on so many levels.

^ I'm in the same boat as you. I may just opt to ignore the payment request and let it get cancelled that way, and if Amiami closes my account due to it, which would be my 1st time pulling such a stunt, it's their loss. -
^ For some reason my eyes keep focusing on the guns in that picture, instead of the the gun...

They're painted in semi-gloss white.

You do realize that the "real" Regult does not have a front hatch, and that the one on the Matchbox/Robotech toy was there only so you could put one of that line's horribly sculpted figures in it, right? The Regult has always had a rear egress hatch, by official design; therefore, the Bandai version is absolutely dead-on correct. The only thing the '80s vintage toy has going for it is it's sheer size.

^Err... those are VF-27 Lucifers, and they actually look better, more impressive, in Saburo's pictures than they do in person. -
That's one of Yamato's no-brainer missed opportunities.
