Well... Aquarion was very impressive, yet the OAVs managed to push it one step further. There is always room for improvement, It would cut on the repeated animations, and definitly improve on the 2D aspects. -Sergorn

Macross, You & Days Before the Internet
Sergorn replied to Roy Focker's topic in Movies and TV Series
Before you went Online how big was your Macross Universe? Well... not very big. Like most of us I guess... I discovered Macross through Robotech when it was aired over here in the late '80. Let us be honest I was a HUGE fan of Robotech... It was one of my favorite anime ever... particularily the Macross Part. I remember not caring much for Robotech Masters... though I greatly enjoyed New Generation (Hey ! It has Varitech ! And they mention Rick Hunter !). The series didn't get much rerun though, so my pasion for it gradually diminished... until another rerun in the mid/early '90. The rerun didn't got to the end much to my dissapointed, and they only showed Macross... cutting it a few episodes before the ending. It's around that time I became actually aware of "Macross" and the fact that Robotech was just like the Frankenstein's monter of anime, mixing three different series together. I was rather bafled actually... in '94 I bought an issue of a magazine Animland which had a Minmay on the cover... with a hige article on Macross... they talked of the original Macross; but also Macross II, Macross Plus.. even Macross 7. It was nice because while I had somewhat heard of Macross II, I didn't know about these lastest series. And that was just the time when we started getting a lot of Macross in France The same year we got DYRL released here... it was dubbed with a lot of translation mistakes (and with the title "Robotech : Macross The Movie" Duh), but boy did I love it ! The years after that Manga Video started releasing Macross Plus.... I certainly loved that stuff as well. Another editor started releasing Macross II a few month later... I was skeptical at first because it had a poor reputation... but I actually enjoyed it very much at the time.... So Macross 7 was remaining but it was hard to see that at the time... I actually had a first glance of Macross 7 when my brother inadvertently bought a Fire Bomber CD, thinking it was orchestral Macross music like Macross Plus... at first I was like "what the fart is that music ?" but it actually grew on me. I got the Internet in 98... a couple years later I stump upon the Macross 7 opening on a webstie and I loved it... so I knew I just HAD to see it... and eventuelly I managed to got the entire series fansubbed in small .rm format... it was a pain in the ass to get, I rememebr using some webbased file sharing acount where you could resquest file and all... but in the end I got it all... and loved it, much to my surprise. I think it was around this time that I began lurking on Macross World, and also Robotech.com (indeed I'm pretty sure I heard of MW from RT.com ^^') I actually saw the original Macross... later than any other series and was stuck with Robotech for a long time. I heard of the Macross being released by Animeigo but it was so expensive I couldn't even being to contemplate buying. So I first so Macross in 2003 actually, when I eventually managed to find DVD Rips on irc chans. Ironically the french release was annouced pretty much at the same time Seriously god bless the Internet though... if it wasn't for it I'd never have seen Seven, Zero or Frontier... this is just crazy because they really are amonsgt my favorites anime ever. I was quite fan of Macross before the Net... but it's really thanks to the internet and being able to see all theses series that I trully became a Fanatic -Sergorn -

You know if I have one regret about this finale... is that we never seen the Battle Frontier and the Battle Galaxy transforms -Sergorn -
The only way to fit Macross II into the timeline really... would be to put it as a fictionnal sequel to the fictionnal "Do You Remember Love Film ?" I'd say it'd still deserve better though. (Eck DYRL certainly does deserve... it almost feel insulting for such a marvelous film to be reduced as a "in-canon fiction" ) -Sergorn

Just go do that ! The last bunch of Macross 7 episodes is amonsgt the best Macross has to offer IMO. -Sergorn

In a word. Meh. I thought the first half of R2 was pretty weak. It got better after they droped all the crappy school stuff... and then become very crappy once everybody started coming back from the dead I did like the end though... it was well thought out... but I say the execution and eveything leading up to it was pretty lame. IMO R2 felt like a total wast, especially considering how great the first season was. It has "production problem" written all over the place, I can't even remotely believe that this is what the creators had in mind after the first seaon. Aww well... -Sergorn

I don't get it either... but I remember there was a lot of bashing back at the time, especially with the latest episode. It's partly why I didn't register on MW at the time... I didn't want to get in the middle of a flame war The transition between Episode 4 and 5 was lame yeaah... Episode 5 baiscally felt too rushed, and the series clearly would have need an extra episode IMO. However... Macross Zero was not cut short. It was announced from the start as a 5 episodes OAV series. So I'm not quite sure what happened... It's as if when starting work on Episode 5 they realised that they just didn't have enough time to put everything they wanted in it... hence puting the caputre of Sara and Aries in the recap. Lame or not it's not the point. The point is that it isn't "magic" in Macross 7 anymore than it is magic in Frontier. They both use silly scientific explanations to explain it. -Sergorn -
Right. That's probably why they named her... Nome -Sergorn

Heh ? Macross 7 certainly had its share of silly science for explanation, with Shiba and his song energy. Do we really ? If you're suggesting it has such positive response simply because it is Macross... may I remind Macross 7 and Macross Zero got far from unanimously positive reactions over here.... As a matter of fact I'm even surprised the response was so positive considering all the Kawamori bashin I've seen over my years of lurking. -Sergorn -
It's not really important to the main plotline sure, but more background information is always nice. -Sergorn

It's just as silly... but I think it's more a matter of how it is executed than the actual concept. -Sergorn -
I'm wondering about that as well. I'll assume Sheryl and her mother lived on the Galaxy even at the time of the incident. However it's unlikely to be a coïncidence that Grace just "happened" to stump upon Mao's grand-daughter to use her in the Fairy project, so it's safe to assume she must have looked for her. But what then happened for Sheryl to end up being a poor kid on the street, without even a memory of her mother except for her earrings ? Seriously a full blowned prequel to Macross Frontier about the 117th fleet and the immediate follow up could be interesting. -Sergorn

LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Sergorn replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah but there are many Blu-Ray being released where region coding is not enforced. It tends to depend on the studios, but for instance most Warner DVDs aren't region coded, so you can buy a Region A and play it on a Region B player, and so on... There's a nefty site that reference it here actually : http://bluray.liesinc.net/ Unfortunately there aren't a lot of information regarding Japanese DVDs and Animes compared to EU or US releases. -Sergorn -

A lot of Blu-Ray aren't region coded. At least as far as US/EU released go. I'm not sure about Japan. -Sergorn -
Well... it's not that he changed his style - if you've read any volume of Gundam L'Ecole du Ciel, you'll see he hadn't... Mikimito still does Mikimoto. However.... if you read carefull "The preview site confirms that Haruhiko Mikimoto [...] will be in charge of the original character designs. Noboru Sugimitsu [...] will adapt those designs for anime." "Original character design" being the keyword - it means he did illistrutations for the characters but didn't work on the series per se... which is probably why the end result looks somewhat different from what you would expect with a more "hands-on" approach from Mikimito. Whenever Mikimoto only does the original chara design... it never end up quite like Mikimoto's work (indeed you can just look at Macross 7 - while you can still feel Mikimoto's original design behind it... you clearly see an obviou differnce between the characters in the anime, and the illustrations done by Mikimoto). Good question. I've never heard of a falling out. Some time it's just that people goes sperate ways, or it can also be that schedules don't fit (Mikimoto for instance was meant to do the character design of Macross Plus... but ended not doing it because it proved to be too much to do both Plus and Seven at the same time and Seven had started production before it). Or perhaps they're not that interesed in Macross anymore who knows and want to do other venue. As I said before, Mikimoto isn't that interested in character design anymore... he always considered himself more of an "illustrator" and got into character design somewhat by accident - which is why for the last decade he's been doing little character design, and focused more on his mangaka carrier. Also there is some willingness on Kawamori's part to do something different... as I recall that was the reason he chose not to use Mikimoto for Macross Zero. As for this new anime, we'll see... it does indeed look a look like Legend of Galaxy Heroes. Pehraps it'll be okay. -Sergorn

Am I the only who prefer NOT hoping for some sort of continuation from the film... ? Because really if that isn't the cas eit would be too dissapointing Hopefully we'll have some official infos soon -Sergorn

I always love the Macross canon. For all its shortcoming the huge battle of episode 5 was really great. Speaking of wish as there been a remaster of Macross II on DVD ? The Manga DVD is just so crappy... -Sergorn

Yeah I don't think Bilrer was for Grace's plan actually... Bilrer wante to creat a galaxy wide fold network in order to have near somultaneous space travel.... that's nothing like Grace's plan to create some king of big human consciousness network. Grace & al sure seem to consider Bilrer a threat from their comment in Episode 15. Sure he went along with Leon's plans... but as far as he knew he was just the legitimate president and Glass had been killed by the Vajra.... Thoughs Bilrer's motivations aren't fully explained, it didn't come to me as a bad guy at all - he seemed rather idealist actually. -Sergorn -

Hum not quite. At first they only have the melody, and they mention their best lyricists are trying to write lyrics for it. But after that we have Misa actually decifering the lyrics from the protoculture plate right before going to see Hikaru. -Sergorn -

Except as I said I'm not a "shipper" of anyone... I enjoy the love triangles in Macross... but not the point of being obsessive about it. I didn't mind that it wasn't resolved in Seven, and I won't mind if it end up never being resolved in Frontier. either And as a matter of fact, while I certainly love Ranka - I've been pretty much rooting for Sheryl ever since episode 16... But it seems, to me, IMHO... that ever since Episode 23 everything points toward Alto being actually in love with Ranka (I've already stated the reasons, so you'll excuse if I don't write a whole novel about it). It wouldn't be so surprising, especially when you consider it is rather common in Anime to have a character being with someone at a point... and yet actually loving another person (You can just look at the love triangle in Escaflowne, a previous Kawamori work for an exemple... or even the original Macross to some extent). Of course this is just my opinion and my own personal interpretation of the ending... But unlike you I'm not trying to force it down other people throat. I'm sorry if you feel offensed than everybody isn't willing to submit to your views... but well... deal with it, the world is full of people we don't agree with, that's no reason to go and insult their intelligence. -Sergorn -

Yeah sure. I might as well declare that you're wont and it should be obvious for anyone smart enough that Alto really loves Ranka and not Sheryl. (And indeed I think it IS rather obvious after 23... but I'm not trying to force anyone to agree with me). Eck as I said I don't really care about that stuff anyway, but sorry people putting down whoever don't agree with them tend to grate in my nerves If we follow your "logic", obviously you might as well be the one who've already decided you're right and refuse to see the "truth". If the extent of your logic is saying : "I'm right, you're WRONG and you don't agree you're stupid !", there really is no point discussing with you. (As for wether Alto and Sheryl had sex, in the end this is pretty much irrelevant as I tried to point out when mentioning Macross Plus). -Sergorn -

And that's the point. Yes, it's open to interpretation - quite frankly I think that was done on purpose prisecely to start these kind of dedates Personally I don't really care whoever Alto would end up with... but the way I felt it was that he was in love with Ranka. Anyone is free to disagree.. But it'd be nice if "Sheryl shiper" weren't going about oh it's obvious he loves Sheryl, and how if we don't see it we're just too blind to see the clues and so on -Sergorn -

Sergorn replied to azrael's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Yeah exactly.I think this scene basically proves Alto's feeling for Ranka... he pretty much says that *everything* he's been doing since the start of the series, he's been doing FOR Ranka, but that he's basically been running away the whole time. Hell this even goes with what Ozma says a couple episode earlier - that a MAN has to protect the women he loves. And the fact that Alto is willing to kill Ranka, in spite of his feelings for her is what make the scene so heartbreaking. And clearly that's how Klan and Sheryl both interpret Alto's comments as well. Indeed I'm not quite sure sure how the scene could be interpreted differently - and for me that's far more conclusive than any of the "hints" leaning toward Sheryl. Maybe Sheryl Shippers just hate Ranka so much that they refuse to see the obvious Of course we do]see Alto spending lot of time with Sheryl, of course he cares deeply for her and knowing that she is going to die really hurts him... but that doesn't mean he loves her. Hell, just look at Macross Plus : Myung spent a night with Guld, Isamu spent a night with Lucy... yet in the end Myung 's and Ismasu's true feelings were for one another - they were just running away from it. Just like Alto. -Sergorn
